I noticed that these folks -- Mature Musician.com -- were among the sponsors of the California Jug Band Association.

As a not-quite-mature-enough musician (at least, not mature enough for this organization) I am not sure what to think about the phenomenon.

Opinions???

Youngsters of age 50 or so all seem to get the notion that they somehow qualify for the title of "mature," but most of them near that "qualifying" age are still pretty childish - in the opinion of we who are gracefully mellowed.

They even let children like them into AARP. It gives them all kinds of inflated notions.

LOL, John..sure glad I am still a sorta youngster.:-)

"Serving the over-50 musician community." Well, well, seems to me like Mudcat was doing that a long time ago! I am sure it's an okay place, but where do folks get the notion we must all be classed into certain age-ist categories? Mudcat has been in the forefront in a lot of ways, as I was reminded the other day when reading the following Children of the Web article in Business Week, esp. the following, certainly not typical at the Mudcat!:

The target customer for major brands is someone like Malini Agarwal, a 30-year-old radio deejay in Mumbai. After growing up all over as the daughter of an Indian diplomat, Agarwal settled down in the city and two years ago launched Friday Club, which organizes social gatherings and now has branches in four Indian cities plus Hong Kong, London, New York, and Toronto. The club's multinational members make plans, keep in touch, and share photos via social networking sites. "It's a global family," Agarwal says.

Or consider Brazilian Fabricio Zuardi, 27. He grew up 180 miles from São Paulo and found a job via the Web with Silicon Valley tech startup Ning Inc. Zuardi now lives in Palo Alto, Calif., in an apartment he located on craigslist.org. He has no traditional phone, preferring Skype Internet-based service. He doesn't own a TV. In his spare time he posts items on his blog or writes software that he contributes to open-source development projects. His taste in music is eclectic: Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, The Pogues. His friends are from all over, including Australia, Britain, Germany, and Slovenia. He has never met some of them face to face. "This is a generational shift," says Ning co-founder and Web browser pioneer Marc Andreessen. "A whole new generation grows up used to new technologies, and they're just different."

Humph!

"A whole new generation grows up used to new technologies, and they're just different."

I saw a book on the shelf in a computer shop titled something like "Computing for the older generation: an easy introduction for the over fifties". I felt like finding the author and shaking him warmly by the throat with the words "I've been working with computers since before you were born you little £&*@~#%".

One thing I like about the music community is that age seems to make little differance. My sons have many pickin' friends who are my age, including me, and I often pick with people less than haf my age. Here's a blog I posted a while back on Myspace that seems relevent to this discussion:

Geezer Grass

A few weeks back, Josh McCallen was offered a bluegrass gig at the Montreal House in Peterborough. His usual partner in the Otonabee River Boys, Clayton, was away playing with Washboard Hank, so he phoned up some friends to help him out. He called Dennis Delorme - dobro, Al Kirby - banjo, Martin Chapman - bass and me - mandolin. When I got there, Dennis, Al and Martin were sitting at a table near the stage. Dennis said,"Hi Jim. Welcome to the geezer table." I think Dennis is the youngest of the four of us and he's a grandpa. We decided to go with Dennis's idea and call ourselves GEEZER GRASS. The band for that night was called Josh McCallen & Geezer Grass. I'm pretty sure Josh is still in his twenties, so the name was perfect.
