Subject: Scores -- Movies and Musicals From: Vixen Date: 19 Apr 99 - 01:30 PM D'Cats-- While perusing the WWII thread and the Amen thread, it occurred to me that a number of terrific tunes have either originated in or been promoted by other media than recordings and live performances. References have been made to Oklahoma and Lilies of the Field and Titanic, just to name a few. The question for the thread is this: what are the scores/soundtracks that Mudcats like best and why? My vote is for a TV series called "the Singing Detective" which "raised my consciousness" about popular songs of the 30s and 40s. The main character dubbed these songs "banality with a beat," but I love 'em anyway. Anybody else? V |

Subject: RE: Scores -- Movies and Musicals From: Ferrara Date: 20 Apr 99 - 02:27 PM When I did St Patricks Day music for a bunch of people in their 70's and 80's, one of the biggest hits was "How Are Things in Glocca Morra," from the musical "Finian's Rainbow." I think it's from 1932. Other favorites that come to mind immediately are "Just My Bill" from Showboat (it embarrasses Bill, as well it might), or anything else from Showboat; "Many a New Day" from Oklahoma; "I'll Walk with God," "Gaudeamus Igitur" (actually an old trad. song) and "Drink, Drink, Drink" from The Student Prince; "I Want to be Free" from Rosemarie; Serenade and the Riff Song from the Desert Song; absolutely any song from Call Me Madam including "Hostess with the Mostest," "Money, Money, Money," "They Like Ike" and the Ocarina Song; Smoke Gets In Your Eyes from -- oh-oh, a senior moment, it will come back to me as soon as I post this without it --; The Italian Street Song from Naughty Marietty, Meet Me in St Louis from the movie, of course Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Oh dear, I almost forgot Annie Get Your Gun. My sister and I saw it straight through twice and came home singing most of the songs from start to finish. Favorites were "Anything You Can Do," "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun," and "Doing What Comes Naturally." Then Calamity Jane, favorite was "The Deadwood Stage." I was about 12, and thought the big hit from that movie, "Secret Love," was sentimental twaddle. Oh well. Whoops sorry. You pushed one of my buttons I guess. I'll stop here. Great topic. - Rita F |
