Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Sep 07 - 04:00 PM Do you know, though we've lost some beloved and wonderful people over the last few years, I don't think I've ever seen an obit thread grow as fast as this one. I think his Mum may well be overwhelmed by the number of people who will want to pay their respects in one way or another Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Phot Date: 02 Sep 07 - 03:51 PM Fiona and I are totally shocked, Col was one of those guys who you couldn't miss, larger than life, and just a throughly nice bloke. I just can't get my head around not seeing him about, and I so wanted to say hello again at Banbury, after so long off the scene, he was one of the people I really wanted to see again, the big deep, "Ello Lad" and handshake with more grip than a vice. Just can't believe he's gone. Chris and Fiona. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 02 Sep 07 - 03:03 PM Like everyone else, I am shocked beyond measure. My wife and I will especially treasure his visits with us when he was over here for the Getaway and singing at Mystic Seaport. He stayed with us on one of his trips, and was a pure delight. What a terrible loss!!! And yesterday, I found out that someone I really enjoyed and admired.. a singer in a black gospel group Ive sung with, just died. It's a lot to sort out. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: muppitz Date: 02 Sep 07 - 02:29 PM Just returning from Fylde having heard the news shortly before George Papavgeris' set at the Legion today. I've known Colin since I was small and he's been a good friend to me and on more than one occasion has dug me out of a hole and been a shoulder to cry on. There was a standing joke with Moor & Coast's evening shift, which is normally me and Chris, that we couldn't shut until Colin came in for his supper, some of you lot should be thankful for that (sic) as he was always one of the last in, always too busy enjoying himself! I'm sure he did what he wanted with his life because as he so rightly put it: "We are dying from the moment we are born, it is just a case of how long we take to go and what we do when we are here." Whatever happens, he made an impact on a lot of people's lives, he was well liked, well spoken of and as far as I'm concerned that's the right sort of impact to make. I'm a skeptic but if there was any way Colin could read all of this I'd just like to say, thanks for the memories! muppitz x |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Tig Date: 02 Sep 07 - 01:34 PM I've just talked to Col's Mum. She found him in bed when she went round on Friday morning and thought he was just asleep but a bit cold. It wasn't until she went up later that she realised something was wrong. There's an autopsy tomorrow and then she'll be able to sort out funeral details. I'll make sure they get on here when I get them. She seems to be coping and was surprised how fast the news had spread. Keep sending her some of the hugs we all had from Col over the years. A terrible shock to all of us. Tig |
Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Banjiman Date: 02 Sep 07 - 01:04 PM I can't quite believe this, I've only met the guy a couple of times (both recently) and we spoke to him on the phone a couple of weeks ago. He has been really helpful in trying to give Wendy a leg up in the folk world. He posted last week that he would try and make Wendy's gig at Fylde on Friday night, I was disappointed he wasn't there......... I feel cheated of a friendship about to start. Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: JennyO Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:51 PM Oh no! I saw the name Colin Kemp earlier on but didn't make the connection. I didn't know his surname. Col K was my first ever Secret Santa in 2003. He sent me a lot of really interesting books about his area, and some Kendal Mintcake, which I love. I had hoped that one day if I got back over to the UK, I would meet him. He was high up on my list of Mudcatters to meet - now I never will. This is so sad. 58 is too young! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Tinker Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:38 PM Colin is one of the Mudcatter's my family has had the pleasure of hosting. When the Shellback's came over we invite Colin to stay the night before the other Shellbacks arrived. Due to a change in flights he came into JFK instead of Newark and I couldn't juggle the schedule to pick him up. My husband sent a car from work and I was suddenly on the phone with a car service realizing I didn't know his last name. He was Col K from Mudcat -- in frustration I finally told them his name was Mudcat. He found it just fine. I'm still in a bit of shock. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Mrs.Duck Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:25 PM Colin was always the big cuddly 'uncle' to all the kids, the one they turned to if Mum and Dad weren't in sight. Maddie is devastated, he's taken care of her since she was tiny and the twins always looked for him at every festival. He may not have had children of his own but the folk kids made him their own wherever he was. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp From: catspaw49 Date: 02 Sep 07 - 11:54 AM Colin had been a 'Catter for almost 6 years and while many of you knew him at home and some US 'Catters had the great joy of meeting him at a Getaway in 2005, for many like myself Colin was known for his words here. As we all know and have experienced, friendships on the 'Cat are very real and can be very close even we have never met and perhaps never will. "Col K" was a friend to many and was known both "above and below the line" on Mudcat. I was reminded of something in a recent thread when I read of his death and I went back looking for it. Though I had not participated in the thread myself, I followed it along as we all often do. I include it here as it shows that on the subject of death, Colin had his head screwed on right as he seemed to about most things in life. Below are his own words on a thread entitled "A Death Wish?"...... Subject: RE: BS: A Death Wish? From: Col K - PM Date: 05 Aug 07 - 07:35 PM Lets face it there is ONLY one certain thing in life and that is that the end is DEATH.We are dying from the moment we are born, it is just a case of how long we take to go and what we do when we are here. We live our lives and make choices as we go,these choices may or may not affect our final demise.Does anyone really know how our lifestyle affects things. Some people live simple healthy lives and die young, others abuse their bodies and live to a ripe old age. How we live our life is to a very large extent our choice, how we die is not (apart from suicides). Suicide is a selfish death, it leaves behind so many unanswered questions and so many people who feel guilty at having failed a loved one.do those who have to deal with suicide in the family ever get over it? I don't know. I know I will die one day,I don't want to yet but accept that it will eventually come. I hope that when it does come it comes quickly. Colin AND, after a response from Little Hawk........ Subject: RE: BS: A Death Wish? From: Col K - PM Date: 06 Aug 07 - 05:29 PM Whilst I agree LH about some of your "certainties" I have doubts that those who die very young will have time to feel any of them. When one gets older then I hope that we all have the chance to experience them, but I repeat the ONLY certainty in life is DEATH. From the moment we are born we start dieing, its how long that process takes that matters, and what we do in the meantime of course. Some of us lead very fullfilled lives and will feel/experience many things, others hide away and suffer them rather than live them. I would wish that more people made the effort to live their lives to the full, rather than just exist as some people do. Am I an optimist or a pesimist? I do not know. Colin I don't know either but I am positive, absolutely sure, that Colin lived life "to the full." Rest easy "Col K".... And thanks for being here at the 'Cat from a friend unmet. Spaw |
