Free at last !   Free at last !

In 20 hours I will be officially and irrevocably retired.

No more totin' dat barge.
No more workin' in a coal mine.
No more stoop labor for me.

Come to think of it, I never did any of those jobs. Most of my working career has been as an appliance/electronics sales representative.

No more sleeping in dingy hotels.
No more driving a car into the ground.

It's old rocking chair for me.

Ah, so? I have an idea that you will have less free time now.

But enjoy your retirement!

From another ex-wage slave - you'll wonder how you ever found time to work, and that's just sitting in the chair!

Hello John OTSSC,

Congratulations on your liberation!

However....

You'll miss getting a day off!

Best wishes,

Peter

My dad seemed to be busier after he retired than he was when he was "employed." It opened up all of that time to do the folk music stuff full-time. He was still going full-tilt at the time of his death.

Have you got plans for what to do with yourself? I mean, once the initial thrill of finally getting enough sleep dies down.

Are you married? Don't fall into the trap of supervising your wife's every move.

My husband's boss is due to retire. My husband asked him what he planned to do after retiring, and all he did was open his eyes real wide. He hadn't thought of that! So we gave him an Elderhostel catalog.

Best wishes for a happy retirement.

My most fervent prayer is that the same be said of me some day.

Welcome to retirement. Sleep when you want, eat what you want when you want, drive the speed limit and feel sorry for all the people speeding to wherever they're going, and never look at a calender again. And don't wear a wrist watch anymore. Buy some instruments that you don't play and learn how to play them. Watch completely pointless daytime TV shows. Get in your car and drive somewhere where you've never been for no reason other than you have the time. The list of things you now can do is endless.

Thank you all for your good wishes and your suggestions. I drove home with an empty trunk or boot(no more samples nor catalogs); the car seemed peppier.
My wife had the biggest smile on her face when I got home---we'll see how long that lasts!
Now I'll actually have time to go places like the Lone Pine Cowboy Festival, and mid-week concerts I've had to miss. If I want to get an ice cream at 3am, I will.
For those of you professing jealousy, you too will retire...young if you get rich, or like me after 44 years...still young these days.
John
