Subject: Tech: Best Trad download site? From: van lingle Date: 28 Sep 07 - 10:14 AM I've been scoping out Rhapsody and Itunes and I wonder what other folks opinions are on these and other sites regarding traditional music content. Thanks, vl |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Trad download site? From: Zhenya Date: 28 Sep 07 - 01:08 PM A few ideas: eMusic.com - requires a subscription, but has excellent prices and a wide range of folk, trad, roots music. (I've been happily using this for a year and a half and gotten a lot of great trad music from them. I always look here first because of the much lower price.) tradtunes.com - Irish and Scottish and some English music. Smithsonian Folkways site - You can buy CDs, or download tracks or whole albums of folk and world music. eFolkmusic.org - I haven't tried this yet myself, but it looks like an interesting source for folk downloads. Amazon.com has just started an MP3 download section this week, especially focused on independent labels, where most of the trad music is. I haven't had a chance to really explore it, but there should be some trad there. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Trad download site? From: GUEST Date: 28 Sep 07 - 02:39 PM This is Mark from Woven Wheat Whispers mentioned before. We actually have sections for both traditional and nautical song. In the traditional section we have traditional artists and albums by Andrew McKay, Bob Webb, Hearts of Oak, Mike Bosworth, Pig's Ear, Bully Wee, Gwilym Davies, Ian Hill, Jancis Harvey, John MacRae, Lynn Craig, Magpiety, Marrowbones, Peter Massey, Saga, Puzzlejug, Sticks, Susie Fox. This month we're adding further traditional music by the likes of The Moonrakers and Andrew King. Traditional music is often these days made on albums which blend both traditional songs and self-written ones so it's difficult to be too purist about it. However we're known for supporting traditional music - we have a feature on Mike Bosworth's album of traditional Cornish songs on our front page for example. Traditional music is the heart of what we want to do and we encourage artists working on traditional songs and tunes to get in touch. cheers Mark |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Trad download site? From: van lingle Date: 29 Sep 07 - 09:15 AM Thanks for your input, everyone. I'm familiar with some of these sites but I'll be checking out all your suggestions. Yeah, Treewind you find there's a lot more to WWW when you click musical styles and a lot of those folks are off my radar but I'll be browsing there. |
