Subject: RE: BS: brand names to die for From: Kaleea Date: 02 Oct 07 - 03:24 PM In my locale (San Diego, CA), it's not the label, but the nickname which gives folks a chuckle. At this years' California State Fair wine competition, out of over 2300 California wines entered, it was the Charles Shaw Shiraz which won. They gave it the double gold medal, too. It was pretty funny when all the snooty wine people found out. Some of the judges got a chuckle out of it. Other than the winery, Charles Shaw wines are only sold in Trader Joe's local stores in California, a bargain at $1.99 a bottle. The customers call it "Two Buck Chuck." And, yep--it's still there at the same price. |

Subject: RE: BS: brand names to die for From: Dave the Gnome Date: 02 Oct 07 - 10:00 AM On the subject of drinks has anyone mentioned Frere Quenelle. I asked them how they got away with that one when I met one of them at a food and drink do in Leyburn - He said the only complaint they had ever had was from an old Lady who used to be a French Teacher - And she only complained because she did not see the joke at first! Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: brand names to die for From: Mr Red Date: 30 Sep 07 - 10:26 AM EmmaB you seem to be very knowledgable on your wines. But that last one - very revealing. Fitou indeed. one of my favourites from your label site link - "Bored Doe" They did produce a local wine in the Cotswolds near Inkberrow. A vinyard in North Piddle - labelled "Chateau Piddle" - didn't do so well - not a big cellar (Ha!) FWIW I bought two bottles of "Red" in Bridgnorth (lovely town - it deserves a folk festival) - Red label, red bottle, red cork, and white wine! Still got one bottle. |

Subject: RE: BS: brand names to die for From: katlaughing Date: 30 Sep 07 - 01:30 AM I don't drink beer, either, but I love this company's beer labels: click. I've seen the red truck in "person." Carlson Winery, here in the Valley which is known as the Wine Capitol of Colorado, doesn't have very good pix of their labels, but I think that one, "Laughing Cat," must be for me.:-) Check out their Prairie Dog and Cougar Run ones. |
Subject: RE: BS: brand names to die for From: Don Firth Date: 29 Sep 07 - 04:36 PM The proliferation of micro-breweries has produced some beers that are beginning to challenge even the finer wines as good companions for various foods. One of the better ones I've found is: CLICKY, a fine brown ale brewed by the Big Sky Brewing Company in Montana. Don Firth |
