Half-Pint, the female of the family pair of guinea pigs popped four times this morning.
Four little furry bundles running around and Athur, the male of the pair, looing VERY bemused with a "Nuffin' to do wiv me Guv," look on his face!

http://guineapigs.info/
also known as cavies
this site is quite opinionated..
http://www.cavyspirit.com/
they rescue pets...
and suggest you not support
pet stores that sell animals
(but if pet stores don't sell
pets, they would have to
change their names!)

I saw the strangest thing this morning on my way home from dropping my son at the school bus. At a corner a few blocks from my house there was a cat with about a dozen kittens. They were at the curb, and as I drove nearer the cat ran down the drive and toward a gardening shed and the kittens all surged after her. A herd of cats, and they looked just like ducklings following their mother. I've never seen one cat with so many kittens. I can only guess that they aren't all hers.

The Peruvians do wonderful things with the critters.

Calling it exotic, and a national treasure

Read up on CUI - just love them to death - I am a fan.

Friends of mine went over there this year. They say they're sold grilled or roasted, and kind of spreadeagled like roadkill. They noticed a large flat rock in each kitchen they went into - the working hypothesis is that it's a Guinea Pig Stone, specially flattened and weighted to get just the right squish for cooking them. ;-)

Graham.

Something tells me that you three just took the glow off of the special event our happy guest described. . .

Perhaps the cultutal differences of other countries is best discussed in another thread.

Sorry Guest, for continuing a thread drift, I do apologise and hope the little additions are doing well

center>Única, es un Portento,!
Sabrosa, de maravilla;!
la rica "Papa Amarilla",
al mundo pone contento.
Única, es un Portento!

Llegó el Pisco Purito,
dulce tormento;
dime que haces afuera,
pasa pa'dentro.
Llegó el Pisco Purito,
dulce tormento.

Salta de Gusto el plato
Rey de mi gente;
El Cuy en mil sabores
esta' presente.

En crema de Rocoto...
un Alboroto!
En crema de Maní...
dime que si!

"Fiesta Peruana"
Con mis amores,
la mesa está servida
de mil colores.

Radiante la papita,
cuy, bien doradito;
la copa rebosante,
con su pisquito.

Uchucuy, Uchucuy, Uchucuy !!
bién picantito.

Tres son mis amores
Perú bendito!!

The fact that they're a delicacy in a third world country is far more interesting and important than some anonymous guest who keeps rodents as pets. They might be saving a lot of humans from starvation!

Keep em, sell em, give em away or eat them?
No, I doubt it's the latter!
