[sorry. I hit the wrong key. let me try again.]

Crouched high in round towers against the return
of foreign marauders who pillage and burn,
the monks of St. Kevin pray, each in his turn,
"When will God send us a champion-king?"
Around them their treasures of knowledge and gold,
the manuscripts thick with the riches they hold,
the monks raise a prayer that is desperate and old,
"When will God send us a champion-king?"
   Rally now, Meath and Connemara!
Follow the one High King of Tara.
   Fearlessly fight and boldly sing,
"Onward for Erin and Brian the King!"
   Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Leinster,
cleanse her from those who'd war against her.
   Brian Boru shall victory bring.
Onward for Erin, and Brian the King!
In dagger-thin boats the slice down the Bann,
the Shannon, the Liffey, each stream in the land,
the Norse kill and plunder, afraid of no man
who would lead Erin as champion-king.
For Erin in splintered by mountain and sea,
each fragment a kingdom, but no king is free
till Brian of Munster becomes the Ard Ri
and Erin unites for her champion-king
   (chorus as before)
Long Brian has slept. The years run their course.
The sword of the British replaces the Norse.
Again are we slaved to a cruel, foreign force.
Who will lead Erin as champion king,
our shackles to sunder, our land to defend,
to dare to make Ireland all Irish again?
What less can we do and still call ourselves men,
children of freedom and Brian the King?
   Rally now, Meath and Connemara!
Light the bonfire on holy Tara!
Send forth the call to boldly sing,
"Onward for Erin like Brian the King!"
   Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Leinster,
cleanse her from those still armed against her!
Like bold Boru, great victories bring!
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!

This of course is copyrighted by me, but I'll let anyone sing it without royalties, provided they tell the audience I wrote it. If you want to record it, let me know. I'm really cheap, and can be found at revtink100@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Thanks for remembering my work, but your memory failed you a tad. let me correct the lyrics a bit:

the monks of St. Kevin pray, each in his turn,
"When will God send us a champion-king?"
Around them their treasures of knowledge and gold,

Bill,

I think I know that song - something about "you've had your own way long enought, dear. 'Tis the hairy side outside tonight!" I'd like to see if you have the same set of lyrics I do - maybe more verses that I'm missing. If no one else is interested you could just email me at ch2oman@uswest.net.

Cheers!

Hello! Great to see my lyrics getting shared. But the version given has a few mistakes in it. Let me try again:

Crouched high in round towers against the return
of foreign marauders who pillage and burn,
the monks of St. Kevin pray, each in his turn,
"When will God send us a champion king?"
Around them, their treasures of knowledge and gold,
the manuscripts thick with the riches they hold,
the monks raise a prayer that is desperate, and old,
"When will God send us a champion king?"
Rally now, Meath and Connemara,
follow the one High King of Tara!
Fearlessly fight and boldly sing,
'Onward for Erin and Brian the King!'
Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Leinster,
cleanse her from those who'd war against her!
Brian Boru shall victory bring.
Onward for Erin and Brian the King.

In dagger-thin boats that slice down the Bann,
the Shannon, the Liffey, each stream in the land,
'the Norse kill and plunder, afraid of no man
who would lead Erin as champion-king.
For Erin is splintered by mountain and sea,
each fragment a kingdom, but no king is free,
till Brian of Munster becomes the Ard Ri
and Erin unites for her champion-king.

(chorus)

Long Brian has slept. The years run their course.
The sword of the British replaces the Norse.
Again are we slaves of a cruel, foreign force.
When will God send us a champion-king
our shackles to sunder, our land to defend,
to dare to make Ireland all Irish again?
What less can we do and still call ourselves men,
children of freedom and Brian the King?
Rally now, Meath and Connemara!
Light the bonfire on holy Tara!
Send forth the call to boldly sing,
'Onward for Erin, like Brian the King!'
Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Leinster,
cleanse her from those still armed against her.
Like bold Boru, great victories bring.
Onward for Erin, and Brian the King!

Yes, I do hold the copyright on these lyrics but sing 'em anyway. I only ask that you tell the audience who wrote them, and that you not record them without my okay, which is not intended as a major money issue. Thanks.

May I commend to you all a book titled "Lion of Ireland" by Morgan Llywelen? It is a marvellous telling of the story of this great King. Morgan is quite simply one of the great Bards in the Celtic world today.

All the best,

Lyrics from Brian Boru in French
(with English translation by Erik Beaty from Alan Stivell's CD 'Back to Breizh')
----------------------------------
Mort Brian Boru vers l'an mil en Irlande,

Douzh nerzh ar c'hadoù da nerzh an dihan ha bennozh doueek ar c'haroud

Mort Brian Boru rend la vie à I'lrlande
Et aux arbres de la paix allumez les guirlandes,
Dans les yeux des enfants oublié cet enfer,
Enfin venue la paix en Ulster
----------------------------------

Back in 1000, died Brian Boru, on the emerald Irish isle,
But his fiery locks and golden harp survive him for the while,
The banner and the sword remain driven in the ground
And peace is back in Ulster, how ever sweet the sound.

When war is brewing or peace is afoot, may a god bless our love
(May a god believe in love)

Down by the riverside,
Like Erin, we've freedom and pride
My soul, my love, over the sea you lie!

To hide our love in the midst of upheaval
Burdened by judgement and disapproval,
In a race against time and sunlight on we pressed,
Near the cliffs we lay to rest.

Dead Brian Boru gives life to Ireland
In a tree of peace, come light the garland,
The children know the fear of hell no more,
Peace has at last come to Ulster's door.

I was sure I had typed a thankyou to this yesterday... but it seems to have disappeared.... so thank you very much... great song.... fits the tune really well. do we all know the tune... or does anyone need it posted?

The river in one of the verses should probably be the Bann, the shannon and the Liffey.

I just saw the reference in a previous message to Durty Nellies in Palatine, ILL. There used to be agroup called "We the People" play in our area, and their sort of home bar was the aforementioned Durty Nellies. Is Palatine a suburb of Chicago on the West Side? Anyway, I've always wondered about their lead singer, Penny Burns, and wondered where she is and what she's doing. If you know her or anything about her, let me know.

My e-mail is jhickman@fox.nstn.ca

I've known Brian and Diane for years - since before either of their kids were born...haven't SEEN them in years either, though. Met them through King Richard's Faire in Massachusetts. and according to their web site they are back down to ONE tinker...?

with the understanding that the below is copyright Brian Leo
(and that I have never seen them written down so I may have some lyrics wrong MMario)

Brian the King

Crouched high in round towers, against the return
of foriegn murauders who pillage and burn
the monks of St. Kevin prays each in his turn
"When will God send us a Champion King?"

Around them is piled their treasures and gold
The manuscripts thick with the riches they hold
The monks raise a prayer that is deperate and bold
"When will God send us a Champion king?"

Rally to me then Connamarra, follow the one High King of Tara.
Fearlessly fight and boldly sing
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!

Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Lenster (spelling?)
Cleanse her of those who'd war against her
Brian Boru shall victory bring
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!

In dagger thin boats that slice down the Ban
The Shannon, the Liethy, each stream in the land
The Norse kill and plunder Afraid of no man
Who will lead Erin as Champion King?

For Erin is splintered by mountain and sea
Each fragment a kingdom but no kingdom free
'Til Brian of Munster becomes the Ard-righ
and Erin unite for her Champion King!

Rally to me then Connamarra, follow the one High King of Tara.
Fearlessly fight and boldly sing
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!

Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Lenster
Cleanse her of those who'd war against her
Brian Boru shall victory bring
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!

While Brian has slept, the years run their course
The sword of the British replaces the Norse
One more are we slave to a cruel foriegn force
Who will lead Erin as Champion King?

Our shackles to sunder, our lands to defend
To dare to make Ireland all Irish again
What less can we do, and still call ourselves men?
Children of freedom and Brian the King?

Rally to me, then Connamarra
Send forth the Call on Holy Tara
Like Brian Boru, great victories win
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!

Warriors of Ulster, Munster, Lenster
Cleanse her of those still armed against her.
Like Brian Boru, great victories win
Onward for Erin and Brian the King!
