From Debra Cowan:
October 10, 2007

Hi all,

I wouldn't normally send out a notice for a single gig that will be happening in a place most of you cannot get to, but this particular performance is part of a much larger community in which events like this are taking place world-wide not only in October but year-round.

I am honored to be participating in the Boston "FODFest" or "Friends of Danny, Celebrating the Life of Daniel Pearl". FODfest is an annual concert tour honoring the life & ideals of the late Wall St. Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who lost his life to terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. In addition to being a journalist, Danny was a talented musician who played a variety of instruments including fiddle & mandolin, and was a classically trained violinist. Wherever he lived, Danny was actively involved in the local music scene, and wherever he traveled, he sought out local jam sessions.

Danny Pearl would have been 44 years old today. The Danial Pearl Foundation and Daniel Pearl World Music Days encourage events like FODFest to happen in October as a memorial to this brave journalist who also was a fine musician.

Even though this event takes place in Boston tomorrow evening, I would encourage you to go the above websites and find an event close to you. You can even organise your own event and the Daniel Pearl Music Days website can point you in the right direction.

If you are in the Boston area, please come to Johnny D's Uptown for a fantastic night of music and community to celebrate the life of this extraordinary man. The show begins at 9:30 PM. Johnny D's is located in Davis Square in Somerville, MA. You can go to Johnny D's website for directions and other information.

The other musicians that will be performing are:
Beth Heidelberg - flute, whistles
Bill Shadle & Brillo of Wild West Picture Show - guitar, upright bass, songs
Blair Lott - guitar, songs

In New York City the Folk Music Society of NY/NY Pinewoods Folk Music Club will hold a concert honoring Daniel Pearl on Friday, October 12 at 8:00. To emphasize Pearl's vision of music as a universal language to respect differences and reach out in global friendship, we have planned "Every Tongue Under the Sun: An Evening of International Folk Songs." The first half will feature Joy Bennett, Jerry Epstein, Alan Friend, Chris Koldewey, and Anne Price. For the second half, everyone is invited to bring a song to share. The concert will be in a hall at 220 E. 23rd St, room 707, NY. Information www.folkmusicny.org
