Subject: BS: OBIT- Deborah Kerr -oh that kiss-
From: robomatic
Date: 18 Oct 07 - 02:52 PM

Just read in the Times that Deborah Kerr has passed at a gentlewomanly age. Despite the NYT's photo of "The Kiss" with Burt Lancaster in "From Here to Eternity" in 1953, I remember her from some of her lesser known films such as "Chalk Garden" where she played a mysterious governess hired to look after firestarter Hayley Mills. One of her lines has recurred to me over time, though I haven't got it word for word:

"What has been discussed was not my life. It was the shape and form of my life with the accidents of truth left out."

Such a pretty lass.

With the proper steroidal, growth hormone, stem cell, plastic surgury and gene enhancment therapies she could have lived another 100 years past her current 87 , all the while looking a hundred times hotter than Brittany Spears.

She's not really gone. Her death was performed by Marni Nixon.

Considering all of her time in musicals, I think the "BS" ought to be taken off of this thread. Run it as a regular, respectful OBIT, please.

Deborah Kerr played the part of the Governess in The Innocents, adapted from M R James The Turn of the Screw, one of the best `horror` pictures ever made.

One of my favorites is "Heaven Knows Mr Allison", in which she played a nun marooned on a Japanese-held island with tough marine Robert Mitchum.

Great actor. I liked almost everything I saw her in but "An Affair to Remember" was a favorite as one of the most romantic movies ever. And oddly enough (or not) it sparked an idea which created another nice romantic pic, "Sleepless in Seattle."

She was just "classy" and classic as well. Makes me very glad we have films.

I have a copy of a movie my mother taped years and years ago, called Vacation From Marriage with Deborah Kerr and Robert Donat. She said it was a wonderful little film. I'll have to pull it out this weekend.

ard mhacha metnioned The Innocents - one of the most quietly terrifying films of all time!

Turner Classic Movies aired it over this past weekened in tribute to Ms. Kerr and I watched it again for perhaps the 60th time. I still jumped when Quint shows up in the window only to float out of view again.

I was wondering if anyone knew if the song that the music box plays and that the children keep singing throughout the film is based on a Trad melody or if it is the total creation of the composer who scored the film? It's a haunting melody I can't get out of my head. I don't recall the yrics at the momnet except for "Neath the weeping willow".

I do recall there being a credit for the lyric in the films forecredits but not a specific credit for the tune. This could be because the tune itself is Trad or, it could be because the tune is part of the score for the film and therefore understood to have already been credited to the composer in the credit card for the score.

Anyone know?

I'd ask my husband but he's on a mission of mercy driving the brother of our neighbor someplace to try and prevent his car from being towed. I don't have the whole story but I do hope they get home soon. They've been gone 90 mintes.

Sadly her husband, Peter Viertal has now also died. He passed away on November 4th 2007. They were married in 1960 and he was 86 at the time of his death. RIP.
