Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 10:45 PM Why need it be a song with religious references to stir religious feelings? Rapaire I agree that songs don't need to have religious references to stir religious {perhaps a better word is "spiritual"} feelings. That's why this thread is titled "religious songs" and not "church songs". Thanks for making that point clear & posting an example of such a song, Rapaire. And thanks to all those who have posted to this thread, thus far. Keep 'em coming! |

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET SURVIVOR From: Rapparee Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:57 PM Why need it be a song with religious references to stir religious feelings? SWEET SURVIVOR Peter Yarrow -Barry Mann -Cynthia Weil- Silver Dawn - ASCAP You have asked me why the days fly by so quickly And why each one feels no different from the last And you say that you are fearful for the future And you have grown suspicious of the past And you wonder if the dreams we shared together Have abandoned us or we abandoned them And you cast about and try to find new meaning So that you can feel that closeness once again. Carry on my sweet survivor, carry on my lonely friend Don't give up on the dream, and don't you let it end. Carry on my sweet survivor, Though you know that something's gone For everything that matters carry on. You remember when you felt each person mattered When we all had to care or all was lost But now you see believers turn to cynics And you wonder was the struggle worth the cost Then you see someone too young to know the difference And a veil of isolation in their eyes And inside you know you've got to leave them something Or the hope for something better slowly dies. Carry on my sweet survivor, carry on my lonely friend Don't give up on the dream, and don't you let it end. Carry on my sweet survivor, you've carried it so long So it may come again, carry on Carry on, carry on. Or Phil Ochs' "Small Circle of Friends" or his "There But For Fortune" or stuff by Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Judy Collins -- there are "religious songs" all over the place. |

Subject: Lyr Add: PEACE BE STILL From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:49 PM PEACE BE STILL {Rev. James Cleveland} [Lead] Master, the tempest is raging The billows are tossing high The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness No shelter or help is nigh Carest thou not that we perish? How canst thou lie asleep When each moment so madly is threatning A grave in the angry deep? [Lead: Ad lib] (Chorus) The winds and the waves shall obey thy will Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea Or demons, or men, or whatever it be No water can swallow the ship where lies The Master of ocean and earth and sky They all shall sweetly obey thy will Peace, peace, be still (repeat) http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/542161.html ** Shiloh Baptist Church singing "Peace Be Still" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgKSdyNJ-TM |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:40 PM Barrett Sisters- I Don't Feel No Ways Tired http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvYG7FLL5gU Here's some information about the Barrett Sisters: "Delois, Billie, and Rodessa Barrett began singing in the Chicago-based Morning Star Baptist Church in the '40s as children. Under the direction of their aunt, Mattie Dacus, they were originally known as The Barrett and Hudson Singers before becoming The Barrett Sisters. Delois was recruited for The Roberta Martin Singers while a high school senior at Englewood High. After graduation, she joined Martin's group full time and remained a member for 18 years. Rodessa Barrett became a choral director of Galileo Baptist church and Billie Barrett became a church soloist after taking voice lessons at the American Music Conservatory. They formed The Barrett Sisters in 1962 and have remained together ever since. Their first LP was recorded for Savoy in 1963. They currently record for I Am Records in Chicago". ~ Ron Wynn All Music Guide http://www.malaco.com/Catalog/Gospel/The-Barrett-Sisters/list.php |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:27 PM Silent Night. Yes. That speaks to me too. It brings back good memories of Christmas. Btw, somewhat off topic, I had the pleasure of meeting a 6 year old boy yesterday who said he had good "rememberies" of when he was little. I thought that was so precious, especially since this boy is in foster care and already has had experiences that no child should have. But he has good "rememberies". I would expect that we all have good rememberies of some times in our life. And we all have bad memories too. Music has always helped me make it through the times that aren't so good. |

Subject: Lyr Add: BEAMS OF HEAVEN AS I GO From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:19 PM BEAMS OF HEAVEN AS I GO 1. Beams of heaven as I go, through the wilderness below, guide my feet in peaceful ways, turn my midnights into days. When in the darkness I would grope, faith always sees a star of hope, and soon from all life's grief and danger I shall be free someday. Refrain: I do not know how long 'twill be, nor what the future holds for me, but this I know: if Jesus leads me, I shall get home someday. 2. Oftentimes my sky is clear, joy abounds without a tear; though a day so bright begun, clouds may hide tomorrow's sun. There'll be a day that's always bright, a day that never yields to night, and in its light the streets of glory I shall behold someday. (Refrain) 3. Harder yet may be the fight; right may often yield to might; wickedness a while may reign; Satan's cause may seem to gain. There is a God that rules above, with hand of power and heart of love; if I am right, he'll fight my battle, I shall have peace someday. (Refrain) 4. Burdens now may crush me down, disappointments all around; troubles speak in mournful sigh, sorrow through a tear-stained eye. There is a world where pleasure reigns, no mourning soul shall roam its plains, and to that land of peace and glory I shall want to go someday. Text: Charles Albert Tindley, ca. 1906 Music: Charles Albert Tindley, ca. 1906; arr. by J. Edward Hoy, 1984 Tune: SOMEDAY, Meter: 77.77.88.96 with Refrain http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh524.sht (Refrain) |
