Subject: Diz Disley Discography From: cptsnapper Date: 31 Oct 07 - 03:11 AM Seeing the recent requests for lyrics to Get Away Old Man Get Away & Ivan Skavinski Skavar brought Diz to mind and I was wondering if anyone knows if he's been recorded live at a folk club. It would be a shame if he hasn't. |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 31 Oct 07 - 05:27 AM "Live at the White Bear" sounds as if it might be at a folk club. His tracks on Cambridge FF compilation look as if they're with Grapelli. He also recorded as a duo with Johnny Silvo (more bluesy)which I have. He is, of course, on a myriad of jazz records, trad bands as well as Hot Club style bands. RtS (by the magic of Google) |

Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: John MacKenzie Date: 31 Oct 07 - 05:42 AM There was a club in Hounslow in a pub called the White Bear. It was run by the Strawbs, or they were the residents in the days when I went. I do remember Lonnie Donegan turning up there one night, and it was the sort of place that had a good buzz about it. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if the recording was done there. Giok |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: WickerWatter Date: 08 Jan 09 - 01:56 PM Leadfingers, did Diz answer the phone? I dearly hope his "It's Rubbish, but it's British Rubbish!" was recorded for posterity. Any word of recordings? I remember being swept away by him at the Talisman folk club in Hitchin with his awesome mixture of jazz guitar and comic songs. I had never heard the like. Wow! I remember a bit of a chorus line from one song: "Yaz, Yaz, Yazz" as in (I'm making this bit up) "and the old boy kicked him up the Yaz, Yaz, Yazz". Ring any bells. I remember Maureen calling "just one more please!" (one more song) as she tried to bring the performer to a halt. Good times! :) I hope he's recovered from his heart attack. |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: John MacKenzie Date: 08 Jan 09 - 02:40 PM Dave Van Ronk used to sing that song too, it's called Yass Yass Yass. here in the DT attributed to Blind Blake |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: WickerWatter Date: 08 Jan 09 - 03:06 PM Thanks for mentioning Dave Van Ronk. Diz was the only one I'd heard sing it. Do you know the lyrics. I can only find The Cold Roll mentioning Yasx3 on DT and I don't think that's it. |

Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: WickerWatter Date: 09 Jan 09 - 05:49 AM Computers! Will I ever get the hang of them? (I think I'm logged in now). Doesn't sound like any of Diz's amazing pub sessions have been recorded though? Unless "Live at the White Bear" holds these delights? |

Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: breezy Date: 09 Jan 09 - 08:48 AM Diz was a big influence on Chris Flegg, - says he taught him chord inversions! - who is a very accomplished guitarist having learned at Diz's knee ,so to speak , and at many other low down joints. so it up to me to mention his rendition of the Marriot Edgar/Stan Holloway monlogues, of which 'The Battle of Hastings ' remains my fave And Bloody Orkney and the Pakistani cloak room attendant , Mahatma Coat and the drunken Spanish guitarist , Sickoveryer Carpet |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 09 Jan 09 - 08:56 AM Since this thread started I acquired a copy of "Live at the White Bear" which dates from 1958 with line up of DD, Dick Powell (vln) Neville Skrimshire & Danny Purssord (gtrs) Johnny Johnson or Tim Mahn or Tony Goffe (bass) .Why 3 bassists taking turns on the same evening I don't know (Mahn was booked but arrived late so was deputised at the start). If anyone is interestd I'll list the tracks, all usual Hot Club titles. RtS |

Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: WickerWatter Date: 09 Jan 09 - 01:22 PM Good gags! :) I added a couple of bits of discography to Wikipedia (link above), but there is little there really. The Hot Club stuff is wonderful, but are there any recordings of Diz's comic turn? |

Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: Leadfingers Date: 09 Jan 09 - 08:14 PM When Diz came back from a LONG time in USA , he ws asking if anyone had any Bootleg recordings of his live stuff , as he had forgotten so much , not having been doing Live gigs for so long |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: GUEST,CN Date: 09 Jan 09 - 09:32 PM I remember playing with him one time at Cambridge and he started delivering his usual two-liners, and the audience actually joined in with the punchlines. For example: DD: Here's a song called 'I'll never get over a girl like you...' Audience: YOU'LL HAVE TO ANSWER THE PHONE YOURSELF DD: (nursing a glass of whisky: Just a drop to steady myself... Audience: SOMETIMES I GET SO STEADY...I CAN'T MOVE And so on. It was really bizarre. I've often heard audiences join in with songs, but never before (or since) with gags. He's an incredibly funny man, as well as a terrific guitarist. I wish I had a recording of one of those gigs from so long ago. |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: cptsnapper Date: 09 Jan 09 - 10:31 PM Like guest CN I was present at a supposed guitar workshop given by Diz where we joined in with the repartee and even though we'd heard it several times before we were still laughing our heads off. A friend of of mine has promised me a copy of a tape that he made of Diz several years ago so I'll jog his memory. Does anyone have a copy of the skiffle reunion CD on which he appeared a few years ago? |
Subject: RE: Diz Disley Discography From: GUEST,Tony Freer Date: 06 Oct 16 - 12:04 PM Does anyone know of a recording made, probably early 1963 with Diz, John Barton, Mick Waldrun, Malcolm Pool and possibly a violinist - Hot Club of London. Any info appreciated. Thanks, Tony. antfreer@yahoo.ca |
