Aeola, I too am not put off by drunken behaviour.I found one drunk person who was like a reverse homing pigeon, and went back to the pub no matter how many times he was taken home.He was a pleasure to escort, and the happiest man in Saddleworth that night, despite his war wounds!

Thanks for the comments Vin. I've already spoken to one couple who were upset about the incident but they were quite happy with my response, and the plans we've got for next year. Also, because the bpolice are so embarassed about it, they've promised a much more proactive presence. I wouldn't want it to spoil anyone's views of our festival.

Not sure about Trasna geoff - I'll probably see some of them when I'm MCinf at Fylde as they're from that area and often perform at the festival. Naimh and Roisin are lovely. I'll let you know. Jim's a star isn't he?

Isambarde will be coming if I have any say in it! And I do love Muldoon's Picnic Aeola - they sent me their new CD which is just brilliant. it's called Gingham Down - have you heard it yet?
Hopefully we'll be booking Gene Burton as well.

I'm doing the Collation of the Evaluations at the moment, and almost everyone has named the young performers as their "highs" at the festival. The only problem was the the Young Generation Concert wasn't in a big enough venue! So I'll have to do something about that next year.

I was there from thursday and only recall the noise on sat night, as one of the many stewards who responded to show a presence on site I certainly would not be put off by the odd behaviour of a couple of drunks. Count me in for 2009!Don't see kerfuffle on the Fyle FF prgramme.

It was 2006 when Uiscedwr were at Saddleworth...I hosted a "Meet the Young Performers" session featuring them and 2 other acts. Also in that session were an excellent young group called "Trasna" Are they still around?   The third spot was meant to be taken by a young group called "TalkingPie" an offshoot of the former young band "Heyfeva" They had just disbanded but the driving force behind both bands Jim Molyneux kept us enthralled with some dazzling music on the accordian. Jim of course continues to receive rave reviews with his new band 4Square.

This was my tenth attendance at Saddleworth. I was on the campsite as always, in my small tent near the food tent and facilities. After the sessions in the town on Friday / Sat i went back to the site and was in the food tent until around 2am. There was a bit of noise hear and there but nothing, in my opinion, that would have spoilt it for others. On the night of the incident, i did hear the commotion in the distance which was a bit unnerving, and was obviously worse for those nearer to it. However, that certainly would not stop me going back next year as i know the committee will address these problems as they have in the past. To stay away would give victory to any would be 'spoilers', tiny minority tho they are, and would mean missing out on what is a overwhelmingly a good, friendly festival!

Well, it's always nice to hear both sides!! There were problems, we know, and they are being addressed - by the committee and by the police. We also do pay a lot of money for extra security, so we're really trying to keep festival goers happy. As Soldier Boy said, we rarely get trouble at our festival, and hopefully next year we can ensure that.

I have been to many Folk festivals over the last twenty years but Saddleworth is the only one I have gone home early from. I only stayed one night even though I had paid for the weekend. The reason was the noise late at night and I won't be going again

Maybe the problem is that the campsite has public access.

He's home now thanks, and doing OK - I'm sending a card from us all in Saddleowrth as soon as I have an address.

The Police keep ringing me as well to apologise - on the Saturday early evening of the Festival I rang them to tell them about some lads who'd come on the campsite behaving threateningly and promising to return. They didn't take me very seriously and wouldn't come out -apparently they never even logged my call! Anyway, the local Inspector has traced my 5 mins. 12 secs. call now, and is looking into it! He's really annoyed as he says I made the potential threat to my festival goers really clear. Maybe this could all have been avoided, but I guess we'll never know.

Jamie is Katherine Roberts brother (KR and Sean Lakeman)

They were there at the weekend, Jamie is also in Kerfuffle of course and Kat in Tiny Tin ladies

Yes, we wanted to attract more young people, and it did pay off. I thought all the young artists and festival goers were wonderful role models and ambassadors.
Already booked for next year are The Young 'Uns - and Gene hopefully!Plus there'll be more young bands - any ideas? I do like Isambarde, so that's a possibility.
Tim, your wife isn't the only one to be smitten by Mawkin Causley - so talented, so gorgeous!!

Finally made it home today; we enjoyed the festival hugely. Many thanks to Alio and all the organisers, stewards, host venues, caterers and festival-goers who made it a very special occasion; especially for a Saddleworth boy who hasn't been back for 35 years!
Was there a conscious policy to book some young musicians and singers this year? If so, it paid off in spades. Kerfuffle were awesome, Four Square showed just how great they are going to be (and soon!), and my dear wife would like contact details for Mawkin Causley, as she wishes to adopt them. (I think she said 'adopt', but I'm not sure...)
See you next year, no question.

Special mention to the security people and stewards who managed to sort out the trouble early sunday morning.

Also worth mentioning that there is rarely any trouble at this festival.

Brilliant set from Mawkin:Causley on the friday, they seem to be really taking off this year, I also caught their set at Loughborough earlier this year and they've come on leaps and bounds since then. I really think they could go very far with this collaboration.

Also enjoyed Kerfuffle and 4 Square. Great choice of young bands this year. Well done.

Forgot to mention the wonderful 'cup and running' new boy band making their Saddleworth debut this year in the Con Club, the only one and only 'PHILISTANS'.

Seriously folks, i'm sure all who were there to witness Stan Ackrinton's trio will agree what a brilliant clever and hilarios set it was. Was speaking to Phil Brown at the whistle workshop who said they hadn't bin 'together' long. Well, let's have more guys (maybe on the main stage next year Ali?) smashin stuff !!

This was a festival of balance for me, I loved the music I got to watch (Following Elbow Jane around clearly being my highlight!), but I would have liked to have found out about the hole in my left boot BEFORE I got behind the counter of the food tent when it turned into a lake on Friday night!
It's a shame about the bother on Sunday morning, poor Graham now has a broken knee to show for his folk festival weekend but it's good to hear it hasn't put them off coming back, they're our best customers!

Jim, don't forget to let me know when you arrive at Warwick and I'll instruct you in the ways of a successful erection, including a special section on putting your poles in the right place!

Great time once again. Many thanks to you Ali and all the committee!

Apart from the abysmal weather (even inside of me tent got wet this time - it's an outrage) there was some fantastic music. Thought after last years tenth, this years (my tenth) would be an anti-climax but the music was brill especially, as pointed out already, the younger bands. Thought kerfuffle were sensational!

Sadly couldn't stay for the survivors session this year but sounds like it was as fab as last years.

As for the war of the roses, well i just think Stan and the Hometowners has to be the ultimate weapon in any one's side, very hard to beat. Yorkies will just have to go nuclear!

P.S. Nice to hear at least one side of Hissyfit. Great singing Hazel and get well soon Linda (forgot to sign the card :-(, hope to see you both next year.

We were on our best behaviour, as the judge had indicated that he expected a clean fight. The Yorkshire class which was evident to all present was unfortunatley obliterated by comedians and time wasters, thus playing to the gullible Lincolnshire judges

Great weekend despite the 'son et lumiere' show on Saturday night (all those pretty blue lights just next to our caravan). Shellback sing in the park with choreographed brolly raising was fun! It is such a friendly festival - well where else could you get Tykes and Lankies to share a stage! As an Essex girl with children from Lancashire and Yorkshire I will claim allegiance to whichever side wins, although there are never any losers!

That long-anticipated first Saddleworth visit lived up to all predictions. High spots? too many to list, but doing my bit in the WOR has to be one; just sorry that the reason for it was Linda's absence.

Hazel and I saw her this afternoon and she was looking better than when we saw her last Thursday. Won't comment further than that as I think she'll be keeping you posted herself.

Low spot? Floating in the bottom of the tent on Saturday morning! No further problems once I'd moved it to a better spot.

I managed to visit most venues, enjoyed sessions and singarounds (Thanks to all the comperes.)

Yes, Chris and Julie were on top form, Mawkin Causley and 4Square
were amazing. Loved Gene's singing.

Met old friends and made new ones - hope to meet some again at Whitby.

Well wasn't it a great weekend?
Too many highlights to fill a post - but particularly enjoyed Nancy & James, Bill & Dave, Barrie & Ingrid, Zoe Mulford and 4Square, and the Roy Clinging Poor Man's Heritage show, and then the Sunday Church Sing and that impromptu Con Club sing with GU4.
Sad to have had to miss Mary & Anahata and Hamish Currie and Chris & Julie due to unavoidable clashes.
Sad too that Linda K couldn't be there, but hope she's recuperating well (any news?).
It was good to have gotten reacquainted with so many friends (everyone seems to converge on Saddleworth, which is great!) and once again made some new ones. Including you, Gene - but hey there, what's that strange word "lucrative"? (us folkies don't know the meaning of that one!)...

Just got round to posting.

Had a fabulous weekend despite the horrible rain. The atmosphere at Saddleworth was, as always, brilliant and (hard to believe) the singarounds just get better and better. The quality is just so high.

Missed hearing the complete Hissyfit (get well soon Linda) but Hazel sang superbly and was a credit to them.

Thanks to everyone who came to my workshops - it really makes it worthwhile when people are so appreciative. I even had past participants telling me how worthwhile they had been.

Finally, thanks to Ali and all those involved in the organisation the hard work certainly paid off. See you in 2009

Thanks to the vG's for a bed space above eye level!!
Snorkel and goggles packed away and 'The Kelly' updated and continuously hugged for about 27 minutes to pass on all the wishes I received for her!

I had a brill time - and it was a fantastic festival AGAIN Ali, even fighting the war?? now that was a v.e.r.y. long campaign!!! Meeting 'new to me' artists and hearing songs/tunes old and new is what it's all about. Zoe, Hamish and Mr AJClark.
Mentioning the word 'new' - The talented 'Young' bands amazed me. Energy, ability, versatilty and sheer brilliance of timing, precision and .............(fit in your own definition),with voices that cut through the air.I'll not name names, suffice to say Wow!
I had prepared to sit for the first song or two in a set...before planning to head off to a singaround...but found myself mesmerised and effectively glued to my seat in awe of the talent on stage. Take a bow. Hope to catch up with some of you again soon.
Many thanks for letting me 'go solo'. It was awkward without Linda leading the songs and selecting the starting note... and special thanks to Mo&Joe and Shimian(sic)for letting me fit in two songs in the Commercial. and now, with the thought of a certain Moor and Coasters 'comment' coming to mind... , I'll stop chatting and head for my own bed.
I have to say I attended my first Guitar workshop and tho' short and interrupted it was a most worthwhile exercise. Many thanks to Phil Chisnall for his patient teaching style, a lesson in itself!
PS Looking forward to seeing everyone (with the glaring exception of 'La Kelly'),at Warwick. Maybe if I pray for rain the opposite will happen! Now, where's that inflatable dinghy?

Actually, joking aside, I DID find the time to drop into a couple of the concerts- highlights for me were 4Square, who aside from being excellent performers have the kind of crossover appeal which could make them absolutley massive in a few years time...they've just grown so much in confidence and panache since I last heard them (believe it or not we appeared at the same backroom "fringe" concert at the York folk day a couple of years back- very much doubt I'll ever be on the same bill as them again!). While and Matthews were good as ever, too.

Well, I'm still knackered after nowhere near enough sleep over the course of the weekend; but had a great time nonetheless. I really enjoyed the singarounds at both con. clubs (so many great voices!); and in particular the session at the Ebeneezer church yesterday morning, which turned out to be pretty lucrative :>) And my mates really enjoyed the concerts, which were apparently going on somewhere or other ;^)

Still, it IS nice to have dry feet again...

Looks like I need to offer my resignation as the buck stops at The Yorkshire Team Captain [McDonald is walking to Warwick ff now!!]

However, ahem, Linda was missing and they had too many in their team and they went on and on and on particularly Scowie and Calderbank and I couldn't understand a word of the dialect, so how the Lincolnshire judges understood I don't know

They went on taking the lions share of the time and a full round was dropped!! batons dropped at t'Olymics mean disqualification ~ and and and that Scowie made a totally unnecessary remark not connected to the proceedings (but I'll let him off as he bought me a coffee)

That Stan Accrington will be kidnapped and beheaded before next year, I cry foul for the tripe spouted for too long!!

The only hiccup was the camspite - again!!! - and local idiots. The young festival goer who ended up in hospital is OK, and home now. One of his mates has just called to tell me they will be back next year, and he also said how brilliant the stewards on the campsite were. They couldn't do enough to help - so many thanks to all of you!

Hi Hamish - thanks for allowing yourself to be "volunteered" to MC the final session at the Con club - we knew you'd do a fabulous job and you did. It turned an anxious moment ("who's in charge? ... what are we supposed to be doing?") into an enjoyable hour of music and entertainment.

Had a fantistic time: thank you to everybody involved. Linda (hope you're getting better) you probably did quite well staying away: Hazel had to abandon the tent and seek refuge in a camper van.

Loads of highlights: but the young 'uns were terrific: 4Square and Kerfuffle were both awesome. (And I'm going to see Kerfuffle again tonight: way hey!) Yes - I agree that the whole vibe throughout the town was great. Yes, the Waggon was pretty wild and overly "fringe" at times, but there seemed no shortage of venues for playing and singing. Anyway, for me that's all part of the experience of a town-based festival: all the venues and variety. If you're not getting what you want at wherever you are, go find it somewhere else: cos it's there somewhere!

No, really, I loved every minute. Thanks again for inviting me, Ali, and SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!

Had a great time depite the tent nearly getting the better of me and Padget. It took a nice girlie like Tina to tel us blokes we put the things in the wrong holes so tahts why we couldn't get a proper erection. Great singing at the Cons Club including the impromptu sing a round on sunday afternoon. Stan and Chris Harvey were just double bloody fantastic as were Flossie (hope you're better), Elbow Jane and Barry and Ingrid (shame her knowledge of English geography is suspect). The management committee are currently looking at giving the poisoned chalice of 'A Vote of Confidence in't Manager' to current Yorkshire captain after losing to Lanacashire agin. I think we need an Italian manager and we also need to revert to the tactics of Leeds United of the 60's and 70's of winning at all costs. Things like getting the Lancashire team drunk, spiking their drink with senopods, cutting Scowies braces, having somme 'femme fatales' to seduce them, changing the venue at last minute so they arrive late, hiding their bus passes more suggestions please cos we can't let them get three in a row. As Alan Cox said to Sid 'Look after the trophy and keep it polished cos you're only looking after it'

Thanks folks. Just got up, still with no voice! The Con Club in Greenfield last night was wonderful - and the toast was raised for Saddleworth 2009 (thanks John!).

Think the big difference for me this year was the humbers of young people, and all so talented. Very respectful of others perfomers and festival goers. They were brilliant!

Off to clear the Civic hall now and join other "left overs" for a cooked brekkie!!

Nice little impromptu sing yesterday in the Con/Tory club with Gu4 and Ingrid and Barry Temple and others

Yorkshire Garland 12 until 1pm thanks to Jim Potter, Alma Wright, John Greaves and all who turned up {Scowie and Ken and Marion and others I don't know names of}

Perhaps next year a few more Yorkshire notables to knock the other horn of Stan Accringtons helmet might win us back Saddleworth from them Lankkies

Just arrived home from Saddleworth, had a great time, Thurs in the waggon was brilliant, Late nights in the Tory club were fab, seemed to be sessions in all the pubs. Tory club ran out of decent ale on Sat night. Weather was crap, hey1 who cares?? Well done to the committee,& good effort from Peter & Anne as chief stewards. I am now getting rid of the bit of Saddleworth I brought back on my car and clothes and prepare for Warwick! Forecast not good, wellies again!!

I've brought the evaluations home ready to collate - I'm off to the final singaround now - and they are just fantastic! People are saying it's the best festival we've had, and some of the artists told me that what they liked was the music which was just everywhere you went, and the great "vibe" around the village.
Not sure where you were dancing, but if I went to the festival as a punter on Saturday I would have chosen to stay indoors rather than venture out into that rain! It was monsoon-ic!!!!
The Waggon was full of musicians all weekend - don't know about the Granby - and the Tory Club was awesome with all the young musicians! Thank you to all those who came and enjoyed themselves - and thanks to all the wonderful artists!

the festival may have been great but as a dance team member the Saturday was quiet to say the least, we played to nil audience until the final set then played to each other, pub sessions were nil. Granby = Juke box Waggon = not much better,muso's wandering about looking for some venue to start a sess, weather = crap not the fault of the organisers.rollon good old British summer time.

Hazel, you're not really praying for rain are you? I have enough problems in that quarter, and I'm staying very positive this year. But thanks for saying it's your favourite festival!!!

If you're driving a caravan or motor home we usualy suggest that you camp first, then get to the Festival office for you camping passes as there's so little room on our streets! They weren't built for festivals!!

Some sad news now unfortunately re Hissyfit - Hazel will be there but not Linda!!! See the message received yesterday from Linda:

I don't know much BUT 'the Kelly' will NOT make the festival this weekend. Kidney and 'related pains and problems. Ouch.

Geoff Miller is also on Sounds of Folk on Monday evening from 7 - 8p.m. (Oldham Community radio) as are Flossie and Better Late. The whole programme is on the festival.(Presenters choice!!) Yes, he is on at the Cross keys on Wednesday - hopefully a good turn out.

Dozy Rosy - yes, the campsite opens around lunchtime on the Thursday. By Thursday evening we usually have quite a few people on it - Peter and Anne, and Eileen and Maurice, will all be there to help anyone who doesn't know the ropes / area. We meet up in the Waggon Inn for a welcome singaround and beverage (mine's a Jamieson's please!!), run by Geoff Miller. The site doesn't close till lunchtime on the Monday - we have had people staying longer actually, on the car park, if necessary. You're welcome to use my bathroom - my flat's only 1 min away.

Trust Scowie to be asking questions - tell him nothing!!! Think Geoff's handed out the instructions to artists for the topics for the Wars of the Roses songs now?

We'll miss John Glynn certainly - and Colin of course - won't be the same without them.

The Young Performers Concert is going to be excellent this year - MC Ken Hall, with Roots Alive, 4Square, Elbow Jane and Kerfuffle - that's on Saturday afternoon as well.

And Mawkin Causley have sent me their debut CD - not really out yet actually - it's brill! I've been dancing in my flat to it. Can't wait to see them on the Friday - same concert as Hissyfit, so it's be a brill evening!

Off to Chorley FM now to appear on their folk programme, promoting the festival. Then a couple of glasses of something are in order I feel!

Aeola - thanks for the comments about the line up. It's strange really. There's no way of telling if it's going to appeal to people until the tickets start to sell - and we've sold more in advance this year than ever before! More than last year which we thought was really special!

Just had meetings with Civic and Police today, and working on the evaluations now. Wouldn't it be lovely if I could do this as a full time job and get paid for doing something I love?!!!

Hi, 3 weeks away - and my poor motorhome will not be able to travel. Mr MOT says the battle bus is dead. Woe is me. I'll have to get down under canvas... not done that since I was in the Girl Guides!!

On the lookout for 'new wheels'.Car for now as it'll take longer to find 'the right van' to fit down my driveway....and no, I'm not going to move house to make a larger van fit. It'll need to be 6'11" Max width for safety of both van and house bricks.

Tim - how can anyone stay away from Saddleworth that long? You'll have to come and see us at the festival - lot of changes but still beautiful, and nice people! We stay well away from any yuppies, us born-and-bred-here-folks!

Eh, and it's never moved! I was born in Saddleworth and it says West Riding of Yorkshire on my birth certificate! So that makes me a Yorkshire lass, doesn't it? And I'm still here!

Yes, it's the Moor and Coast tent on the campsite, Guest M & C - they also run the bar in the Civic hall, with real ale, including a Festival Ale. The Tory Club and Waggon are decent bars too.

Not long now is it? I'm just sorting out artists for 2009 to go in the programme. And I've just been asked to do some MCing at Cleckheaton in the Town Hall, which should be brill! Hi Sue - how are you and the kids?

My usual food spots are the Take away, the cafe next door, the camp site M & C tent and the Civic hall!

The Wagon pub, I think it is, also has a good attendance too on Saturdays

Folk fest goers of course need food after the beer and hate normal dinner and tea time limits

Failing that a chew on my T shirt and a bag of peanuts

Living on the other side of the hill and an incomer anyway the sensitivities are all notional to me but the arrangement is an odd one. Watching the brass band festival and seeing a queue of Range Rovers and Mercs being held up (one of them containing a well known corrie actor) it's hard not to conclude Saddleworth is the Wilmslow of NW Manchester.
The place is still decked out with white roses on yorkshire day.

True Guest Glueman,true. When I lived there the changes from Yorkshire to Greater Manchester were being proposed. There was talk of land mining the roads at Lees and Springhead...
There was always a sense of 'summat for nowt' in those days. Saddleworth got all its services from Oldham, but paid its rates to Wakefield.
Tell the truth, I went back briefly five years ago for a funeral. It all seemed a bit yuppified to me. The pub where I was on the dominos and darts team is now a high-end gastropub, people eating stuffed cabbage rather than playing cribbage. Hang on; unrestricted nostalgia; I may be turning into a folkie! AAAArrrgggHHH!

Les, I've been trying to sort teatime meals out. There's a newish cafe in the village - Christy's - run by a friend of mine. Next month she'll get a licence, so it'll be a cafe bar. On the Friday they're hosting a session from 6p.m. as her husband is a fiddle player. But she's also opening from 9a.m. till 10p.m. every day over the festival weekend. Hope that helps? Aren't you sooooooooo impressed with me?!!

Oh, and we've got around 65 events again this year!

That's the main trouble I have had at Saddleworth is getting a meal in the evening / teatime. The cafes are usually closing, the Indian hasn't opened yet & the only pub that serves good beer has a long wait for food. I wouldn't say there were plenty of food spots (only down the front of my tee shirt).

Hi Bobcat. I'm still doing the Running Order for the committee so I'll work it in somehow. Muldoon's Picnic came this year, so it might be a couple of years before they're back again. Too many good performers around - that's the problem!!

HIssyfit have just been on my radio programme doing an interview and singing live - they were brill! I'm really glad they're coming back to Saddleworth next year!

They are a terrific and lively harmony group from Glasgow and we should see more of them down here. They run great workshops too.And what about the Young Uns from Hartlepool. Ooooh, hopefully Glen won't work me too hard this year, there's a fair few of them I want to see, but most especially the lovely lads of Elbow Jane, I spent Fylde weekend stalking them as I had no food tent to work in, ended up selling CD's for them when someone thought I was part of the entourage!!!
Chris & Julie, Nancy & James and AJ are all on the list too!

Yes I have seen Mawkin Causley Ali. I saw them at Derby Trad Festival the other week. I am very very impressed with them. I would love to get them to Faldingworth, and the same applies to Kerfuffle.

Have you sen Mawkin Causley, Villan? Their demo CD is great, which is why I booked them, but I've not seen them perform. We're making a huge effort to get more young people involved this year.

To all those people who didn't want me to leave the festival - I'm not doing! I'm staying as Festival Director - but not doing any of the jobs except running the desk over the weekend!!! So I get the best of both worlds, which is great!

The guest list is looking good too - Chris While and Julie Matthews, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, Mary Humphreys and Anahata, Flossie, Stanley Accrington, Anthony John Clarke, Hissyfit, John Prentice, the Shellbacks and Roy Clinging and Neil Brookes. Plus loads of young performers this time - Mawkin Causley, Kerfuffle, Elbow Jane, 4Square, and Roots Alive.

And we've got the Wars of the Roses rematch - hopefully Yorkshire will win it this year - although I'm comletely unbiased of course!!

So see you all there, on July 18th to 20th = with excellent weather as usual!!
