There's some mention of Sheffield Carols tomorrow morning on BBC One, with Kate Rusby.

Word of that session has already reached the ears of the intrepid Sheffield Live folk show presenter and is already scripted into this week's show - in so far the show is scripted at all.

Second half of "Thank Goodness It's Folk" after 11.00 - 93.2 FM, www.sheffieldlive.org and podcast.

Next weeks show i.e. December 14th, will be devoted to the carols - at least one hour - for the curious.

Les, Maggs, Ken J, Emma B et moi went to Kelham Island Tavern after carols last Sunday we started carolling whilst there. Ollie the barman was 'off duty' but he said to me yesterday how much he enjoyed it. He's from that area of Sheffield and it brought back memories, he also said he had had some good feedback from the regulars.

Sorry not been back for a while.
We start our singing next weekend, now that the big choir stuff is finished, three performances over the last two weekends of more serious stuff.
Yes Dave I know Caroline well, we shared "Padstow" at Toronto's Mayday Morris Dancing last year.
Hail Smiling Morn is so bloody high though but such a good'un that we do it anyhow.

Maggie and I would like to thank fellow Mudcatters MCFat, Wyrd Sister, Folkiedave and Emma B who helped us to have a great day at the carols.

We were sorry to hear that no Ducks had made it through, although the season is more for Geese and Turkeys anyway.

Sorry I did not have a lot of time there post-sing, I was tryng to get some stuff for the radio programme done.

Sorry to miss you Jane and Geoff, thanks for the text we were all about worried abiout you in that wild weather. I actually managed (for the first time ever) to get to The Royal without taking a wrong turn and in time to find a small space next to the bar as the final link in the getting the empties to the bar chain!

A lovely extension to the carols this year by some impromptu singing in the Kelham Island Tavern afterwards.

Thanks for that Dave not knowing Sheffield I thought I did well but
obviously you Know better than me.
As for the Victorian market I am also quite well aware of that and took that into account. It missed the dancers and general air of the past.

In fairness the VCM was never expected to be as good as it has been - Kelham was severely flooded and they are taking to opportunity to make a lot of changes in the museum.

The roadworks are also a result of the flooding where the road collapsed into the River Don. The Blue Ball at Worrall is easy to get to since it is on the diversion!!

reminds me of Gilbert and Sullivan...

Funny that - Gilbert and Sullivan reminds me of Hal Smiling Morn!!

And what about "Old Foster"? Little boys in Sheffield never wanted to be train drivers - they only ever wanted to sing the bass line in "Old Foster".

I ended up arriving in Worrall this morning quite unexpectedly, and from the opposite side to where I meant to be, because of those roadworks. My sympathies, Mrs D!

We had a right good sing. Not so crowded as last year after the carols festival - no one carried out this time.

My favourite is Diadem. Though I like the "flies away" bits in Hail Shining Morn too - reminds me of Gilbert and Sullivan...

It wouldn't have helped if you had found the road anyway there was a road race. But texting us helped. At least we knew you were lost!!

It is a new trap set by the locals to catch unwary mudcatters.

Geoff and I set off at 10.30 this morning to get there but after two hours and the third tour of the centre of Sheffield without finding the right exit to Dungworth we gave up and came home. Every road we thought we knew seemed to have been dug up! Oh well hope everyone had a good time.

Say hello - down by the front window/organ side/get my own cheese sandwich at 1.00 pm.

Warn the taxi driver that there is a road race on tomorrow on the Loxley Rd. and he may be better going via Stannington.

If you want to avoid black cabs then (0114) 266266 (Mercury) is your best bet. Phone at arouund Rotherham!

See you there.

We should be at Dungworth tomorrow. We are due to arrive at Sheffield station at 11.25, so if anybody wants to share a taxi to Dungworth, we are the ones carrying instrument cases and looking sheepish. And if anybody fancies a tune or a song in Sheffield tomorrow afternoon let us know.

The Orange Peel Carolers will be doing their small part to continue the Sheffield Tradition in Canada (well as close as we know how, with a few tunes thrown in here and their and some stuff that's not really from Sheffield but most people over here don't know the difference Oh yes and a Canadian version of Angels from the Realms of Glory sorry!)
Anyhow we do it with much gusto and have a great time doing it.
We will be at the Golden Kiwi in Cambridge on Dec 16th
Sheherds Crook In Georgetown on Dec 15th
and The Winchester Arms in Orangeville on Dec??

MCFat, is that the Worrall book or is it another one which you sell??
if it's different I would like at least one, or maybe four or more.
Good singing to All, JohnB

Indeed, I well remember Peggy Seeger saying that music was the last faculty. Which is why the family sang to Ewan as he died. (Desert Island Discs).

In fact as a good start to one of our daughters, we got one of the world's great folk musicians to play over the bump as she lay kicking in the womb.

Not a musical bone in her body!!!!

It is scientifically proven that the first use of memory from in the womb to the last loss of memories is music. [It was on the radio this morning, I'm not a genius!] Consequently, people who have had a stroke will benefit from music as this is the last to go and the easiest to relearn. So, a Carol session for Neil would be medically sound as well as being a wonderful gesture. It might help other stroke patients in his ward too.

Still think you should organise that hospital sing, no matter what the doctor says!

Or, more seriously, how about a small house sing ifc he's out before Christmas?

It was indeed strange not to see Neil. However I am sure that he will be heartened by the card and the fact that he was much missed, he has promised to be here next year and I think we are all going to hold him to that !!

Mr Eyre (folkiedave) was in fine form although I beat him to the pub,

He did indeed beat me to it - by cunning use of public transport. The bus clearly arrived early - I was there at its normal arrival time and there was a queue building up at that point and Jim was already anticipating his first pint of Hambleton's. My other excuse was that I had forgotten the card I had bought for Neil and had to go back for it.

Which was really a link into the fact that one of the leading singers for the past twenty+ years, Neil Henderson, was missing today - Neil had a stroke back in July and is not yet well enough to come, indeed he is still in hospital. There will be many who miss Neil.

I am certainly one of them.

I have checked this this evening.

I am reliably informed that it does not work in the normal way at the Travellers - instead of starting the first Sunday after armistice as many do - the sing there for some reason has always been done by counting 5 Sundays backwards from the nearest Saturday to Xmas. And please don't hang me if that doesn't work either!!

If it is any consolation, the local I spoke to got caught out last year and he has been going for ten years!!

The Kilmore Carols, sometimes also known as the Wexford Carols, have been sung in the Parish Church of St Mary, Kilmore, County Wexford, Ireland since 1751. They are a cycle of carols, one of which is sung at a time, sung at Mass on the days from Christmas Day to the Feast of the Epiphany.

The carols are very rarely sung outside the church so it was a real treat to hear the singers at the Festival of Village Carols last year, and to meet the singers as well.

The carols are sung at a very slow and thoughtful pace with skilful decoration of the notes which is simply wonderful to experience.

Some more information about the carols and the singers, with links to additional material, can be found on the Village Carols website.
