Just had an e-mail from John about his new album:-

The CD 'Come All You Wild Young Men' has 15 tracks:The Valiant Sailor, Sam Hall, Lakes of Ponchartrain, Polly Vaughan, Skippin' Barfit Thro' the Heather, Lord Gregory, Horse and Waggon, Humours of Ballyloughlin, Spencer the Rover, The Magdalen Green, Bonnie, Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, The Swan Swims Bonnie, The Border Widow's Lament, Andrew Rose and Matt Hyland.
Accompaniments on Harmonium, Guitar and Indian Harmonium, with an instrumental on Whistle/Bodhran.
It's £10 plus 63p P&P. Cheque payable to John Kelly, to 40 Tunstall Lane, Wigan, Lancs. WN5 9HB.

I've only seen this guy do a long floorspot, but he was absoluyely excellent. Fresh and original and very competent.

I gather this particular John Kelly is based in Wigan.

There are a lot of John Kelly's in this neck of the woods, so the name may cause some confusion. There are 3 generations of fiddlers by that name in one family. John Kelly Senior (RIP) was from County Clare, but lived in Capel Street in Dublin for many years and was a member of Sean O Riada's Ceoltóirí Chualann. His son and grandson (both named John) are both Dublin based fiddler's. His other son James, another fiddler, lives in the US and has a number of CDs to his name.

There is also a John Kelly from Roscommon but living in Ennis who plays flute. His brother Alan is a well known piano accordeon who was playing in Eddie Reader's band at least until recently.

There are probably others who I haven't thought of yet, both John and Kelly are well known names around here.

Aplologies for the thread drift, but I'm sure others will make the same mistake I did in thinking this was a thread about one of the Irish based JKs.

Yes there were a lot of Kellys in the Wigan/St Helens area. My sisters mother married one. And one of his brothers emigrated to Canada, where he became known as the Poet of the Prairies - on account of hism being a train driver and crossing the prairies continually. There is a family legend that The Dubliners recorded one of his songs - but I have never seen any back up for this.

Declan- Given my Irish ancestry, it's not surprising if my name sounds familiar, particularly as it's a common name in Ireland anyway. I undersatnd that Sean O'Celaig (am I spelling that right?) means 'Son of the Chief', which would explain the proliferation of Kellys - we're not all of the same family - lots of chiefs = lots of sons thereof. Correct me if I'm talkin' shoite. My mother knew three John Kellys, so it was probably odds on that she'd end up marrying one. One of them was Scottish. There's lots of us there too! I have the Ceoltoiri Chualann album 'Playboy of the Western World', which I understand has John Kelly playing on it, although none of the musicians is named on it. Is he on there? My grandad (also a 'John Kelly', as was my father) played the flute and melodeon, but I don't know whether he was known outside of Liverpool. My aunts used to teach Irish dancing until the 1960's, amd are still remembered in Irish dance circles in these parts - one of them is still around, aged 86, and keeps in touch with the dancing. My son plays jazz guitar. Guess what his name is?.....

I've just mentioned you on another thread in the last few days; just trying to remember which - the Jack Hudson one, I think. I'll try and get down to the New Inn soon -is it still running?

John Kelly is also the finest Morris dancer I know and holder of the North Wests' best beard and moustache!
