Yvonne - I think I know of a very good recorder teacher in mid Cheshire. She actually joined our group when we first started but, to be honest, our standard was a bit too low and I fully understood that it wasn't for her. We have improved since then, honest!

Carol - I will email you. Yvonne - I don't know of any recorder tutors but have one or two ideas of really good players who might take pupils so will try to find out.

The group is still going, (going strong these days) with five members SATB plus a floater, my daughter, who usually doubles the soprano line on her tenor but fills in on any of the others lines for absentees.

We meet once a month on the second Thursday.

Although there are only five of us we are not actively seeking new members because we don't want more than two to a line. However, I doubt if we would turn away anyone keen to join us as long as our group didn't get too big.

There is the Vale Royal Recorder Consort which meets on the last Wednesday of the month in Sandiway, Northwich. This is a big group and I think they would welcome anyone who fancied playing in a much larger consort than ours. Three members of my little group are also in VRRC. I can pass on details if anyone would like me to.

I agree that eric the red misses the point about recorders.

Like every instrument they have their own qualities and are very effective as a consort instrument playing together in parts.

They might be quiet but they are quite capable of making themselves heard. The baroque treble recorder was designed as a solo instrument to be played with an orchestra, albeit a smaller one than is common today, but they will carry over the orchestra, especially in the second octave.

I have known people play descant recorders in sessions - in fact, I've done it myself - and they can be heard just as well as whistles.

I've played a contrabass recorder in sessions before now and other people in the session have assured me they could hear it.

The last time I saw Mie she had only just started learning the violin and I thought how brave she was as I learnt violin as a youngster and found it very hard. I gave up eventually because it was obvious I wasn't getting anywhere. It was lovely to see her playing the fiddle last Friday and, obviously, she is getting somewhere with it so well done Mie, I say!

You may've seen 'er indoors playing fiddle & eggs at the Dusty last week.

She's also involved with a number of recorder players in the area, some've whom are returning to the instrument after many years absence & in a way are re-learning.

Most have been solitary in the past, but of late they've been gathering to join Mie ['er indoors] & her other chums who're learning whistle & other insts at a mutual fiend's house.

They're all able to play straight from the dots, but hardly any play by ear.

I'll pass on the info about your Tarporley group & see if they're interested in joining yours sometime.

Are novices ok, or do you prefer experts?

Mr Happy: at the moment it looks as though our practice night will be Wednesday some weeks and Thursday others as we don't seem to have a guaranteed evening free every week.

Monday, Tuesday and Friday are never free so we can rule them out.

Eric I fear that you miss the point. Recorders in the rennaissance period were used as a consort instrument. That is, they played individual parts often, although not exclusively, in a SATB (soprano,alto,tenor,bass) format. Of course the instrument tends to be quieter the larger it gets but you would be very unlikely to hear a bass, great bass, quint bass, quart bass or great extended bass playing solo! And furthermore, rennaissance recorders had a wider bore so giving a fuller sound. Do listen to some recorder consort recordings and I hope you'll admit that not only is the volume sufficient for your needs but that the music is glorious in the extreme. And anyway, the recorder was/is an indoor instrument. The louder instruments such as shawms and the brass instruments of the period were outdoor instruments.
In the baroque era the bore was narrowed for a greater extension and for solo work and please listen to the works of Handel, Vivaldi, Bach and Telleman, just to name a few, to witness the beauty of the solo instrument, usually the alto and often accompanied by harpsichord and viola da gamba.

What is the point of recorders, I know it's an ancient instrument, but you can't hear them, the bigger they get the quieter they sound, taken to the logical conclusion, you could make one so big, it would be silent.

Mike: if you would like to come over occasionally we would be delighted to see you. Would love to see your Kobliczek recorders - I've heard much about them but never actually seen one.

My daughter has a Moeck Rottenburgh palisander tenor (fabulous thing) and a Mollenhauer Kynseker tenor in plumwood which is beautiful. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a free evening to join us so she will be only an occasional member of the group. My own instruments are mainly baroque (Moeck Rottenburgh and Mollenhauer Denner) but I do own a couple of Mollenhauer Dream sopranos and a Dream alto and I will use these more for the really early stuff.

I've recently bought a Silberton metal recorder - have you ever played one of these? Great sound, a bit flutey, not much volume but very sweet. It looks a bit space-age and is guaranteed to arouse people's curiosity at sessions.

In essence I am interested but have a lot of pressure time wise with other commitments so couldn't get together on a regular basis. I play mainly baroque narrow bore Moecks myself (soprano, alto, tenor)and also have a Hopf bass and rennaissance wide bore soprano and alto recorders by Peter Kobliczek of Germany; beautiful to play and look at. I am very slow with reading bass clef and prefer not to touch this beast.
I also play crumhorns and shawms.
I live in Chorlton-cum-Hardy in South Manchester. Sale is just down the road John and I also play in an occasional early music group with members based in Sale.

Anyone interested in joining a new Recorder Consort in mid-Cheshire?

We are two music teachers based in the Tarporley area and are keen to start up a consort so if you are within reasonable travelling distance and would like to join us please let me know.

In particular we are looking for players of the lower instruments as we already have sopranino to tenor, but anyone would be welcome.

The music is mainly early stuff up to and including the Baroque period; at the moment, we seem to be playing mainly Playford dances and dance tunes from 14th century Italy.

Eventually I guess we will standardise on one range of instruments so we get a good blend but, at the moment, are playing Dolmetsch, Mollenhauer, Moeck and Hopf instruments i.e. the instruments we already own.

We are keen to emphasise the enjoyment aspect of the music making and don't want to be too 'precious' but nevertheless do want to have a professional approach to our playing and produce a good sound so I don't think we would be a suitable group for beginners to join. We're definitely not high-flying virtuosi either!

Does this sound like your sort of thing?
