I couldn't give a monkeys about whether he is good or not. That in the end is a matter of opinion and punters will judge eventually.

I do want to know where he has been to say the folk scene is moribund though, 'cos it is simply wrong. And does that include Saddleworth? I think we should be told.

He probably says it's moribund because folk venues are not queuing up to book him.

"My hope for him is that he remain true to his vision and not get caught up in the 'industry' of 'moving product'."

I've met Gene and I don't think there's much danger of that, and that's borne out by his posting to this thread too. He was almost embarrassed when I suggested a CD swap at the time, as he normally gives his away for free, though I doubt if he's still doing that.

He's a perfectionist, knows exactly what he's creating and does it for its own sake, not for fame or fortune though he'd obviously like others to hear his songs.

The lad has loads of talent, but his voice ain't suited to 'Dink's Song'. It reminded me of my irritation at John Jacob Niles' renditions of folk songs, albeit a perfectly fine voice that is attractive to many. Jeez, it must be wonderful to have 612 such talented friends including even the sadly departed such as Nick Drake!

...I'd just like to say what a great thread I think this has turned out to be, getting people who are passionate about folk and roots music to debate the ins and out of what in their opinion goes into making good folk songs/ interpretations, and what doesn't. I'm not blowing my own trumpet here, because with the benefit of hindsight I see that my original thread title was stupid and inflammatory; and that this has probably come about in spite rather than because of my own input...nonetheless, thank you, mudcat, for keeping the thread open and for allowing the kinds of debates which are IMO vital in keeping the concept of folk music alive.

Even in the winter, I have a fan in my bedroom to provide white noise of a sort. I can get to sleep much either that way.

I will not be a smart ass.
I will not be a smart ass.
I will not be a smart ass.
I will not be a smart ass.

It's working so far.

I will not be . . . .

I tend to prefer more traditional music, but I have to say I enjoyed these recordings.
Good Work, Gene!
