My guess is his prominent featuring of those artists is intended to signal where he's coming from musiclly rather than to imply he enjoys a close personal relationship with them... (...then again, I'm told the man has a complex and not entirely harmonious relationship with the truth...ho hum indeed!) |

There's not much in the 4 sound clips to indicate that he might ever sound much like, just for instance, the Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, U2, the Louvin Brothers or Edith Piaf! From: GUEST,a southampton folkie Date: 03 Dec 07 - 03:21 PM I just spoke to Gene over the phone earlier this evening...he sounded in better spirits than I'd been led to expect...anyway, he'd obviously been informed about this thread by a third party and called to thank me for setting the ball rolling...I think he'd clocked the sudden upsurge in interest on myspace and was puzzled before finding out! He said to thank everyone for taking the time to listen, and also to thank "the folk police, for providing much unintended amusement"- his words, not mine...I can't think what he might mean by that :) He also mentioned he plans to put more new tracks up at some point in the next week- I'll keep an eye on his site and (with Gene's blessing) probably start another thread once the new tracks are up. |

The man has enormous potential and could be as huge as any in the folk world so don't misread this in any way. I think Gene has a psychological attachment to trying to do everything in one take with minimal studio "trickery"; which occasionally betrays his limitations as a musician...I think he sees this as conveying greater authenticity, rightly or wrongly. I'll certainly pass the message on, though...although money may well also be an issue, what with no record label backing and, I think, pretty modest personal circumstances. |

What you/he needs is another ear in the room. Someone to listen for pitch, (Fiddlers are excellent at this) trailing notes, phrasing and so on. The accompaniment was fine and I have no doubt that he is quite capable of judging the artistic content all by himself. If you weren't a guest, I'd be able to PM you with details but we're stuck with this forum for now. |

However the rest is unfair to the singer in question. You "Guest", have opened a thread which could also destroy a person who is just starting out and needs positive support. Not negative as I'm sure he will and already has received. I also noticed that you have not commented on any of the negative points but"onward we go". I have been running a very successful Festival for a number of years and I wouldn't consider booking him. I like his voice and his guitar work is fine, but the writing is boring and would put the audience to sleep or have them leave. It is amazung to me it has gone this long to be truthful. What kind of fan is this? I'm always in need of a good fan around here, especially in the summertime but even now they can be handy to have. I gather by calling this one a "music" fan that it plays some sort of tune or other ditty. I personally don't give a turkey if my fan plays music, it just has to move air. I have had good success with the Gordon Bok Fan that we got from Kendall and Gordon. It has the automatic switch that turns it on toward morning...a nice touch. Is the music fan available in jazz and classical versions as well? How much is the fan and what is the warrranty? A;; the questions in this paragraph need an answer or I feel this thread will suffer quickly. Finally, we are always happy to hear someone's music but generally it comes from a member and not a friend of a friend of a friend or whatever, none of whom are members or even vaguely interested in this joint except as a source of numbers or revenue......so southhamp dudely, bite me. I don't think Gene's all that bothered about playing your kind of festival these days, Beer; and as for my own part I'm just trying to share the music of someone I consider to be a great talent with people who may or may not be interested; clearly, some are and some aren't. I haven't responded to any af the negative/abusive stuff, 'cos 1) why feed the trolls? and 2) Gene ain't bothered, so why should I be? Criticism only merits a response when informed, constructive and reasoned, as with Jim Lad's posting, for example. |

Firstly, most importantly, my friend who started the thread has my full approval. Judging by my profile views on myspace, there are now hundreds more people who know who I am and what I do than a few days ago and I (you?) have him to thank for that. I know a lot of people will have listened and been really inspired by these tracks, and why not? They're great songs. Secondly, I should point out that I'm 26 years old, been singing and writing for several years and for what it's worth I consider my sound to be fully formed. I'm not looking for anybody's advice and I wouldn't change anything on this particular collection of songs for the world. Neither am I particularly looking for gigs at folk clubs or festivals- I love folk music, always will, but am less enamoured of the UK folk "scene", which seems to me have become pretty moribund. There's one good F.C. here in Birmingham which I go to occasionally; and I have a couple of folk club gigs coming up in the new year (one at the Red Lion which is really more of a concert venue, the other back down south at a club whose organisers have been very good to me over the years) But by and large I tend to perform and listen elsewhere these days (there's some great open mics in this part of the world, and I'm in the process of getting some pub gigs lined up for the new year). Finally, no-one need worry I'll be "destroyed" by the comments of the F*** Police - they're always good for a laugh! And I'm heartened by the input of those contributors here who've obviously listened, enjoyed and engaged with the songs. And, just for the record (I should know better than to get drawn into this, but I've taken the bait, so well done, "Beer" - hope you're proud); nobody, to my certain knowledge, has ever once either fallen asleep or walked out during any performance, paid or otherwise, by myself...even members of the F.P. and even on a bad night. We are all quite different with our talents and expectations. I remember watching Gene, as he listened intentley to other performers, and being quite surprised at the sound he himself produced. For about 15 seconds I was put off by the 'quasi-Elizabethan-madrigal-middle ages-Chaucerian-affectation' in his singing and then was awash in self-embarassment for being such a self-important, jaded fuckhead. He's brilliant, obviously. One can't ignore the subtle interplay between the guitar and vocal on 'If'. There's a truthfulness in his delivery that can't be manufactered. 2 mics and a touch of reverb don't lie. 'Local Girls' is another very nice track seeming to scratch a little deeper than he intended to go and there were some moments I'm sure were uncomfortable for him to reveal, but that's what makes it such a great song. My hope for him is that he remain true to his vision and not get caught up in the 'industry' of 'moving product'. It'll be a slow build , but better in all ways in the long run. He's doing fine. It's going to be fun watching his growth as an artist. Thanks to the OP for being such a thorn as I ignored this thread for days and now I'm glad I took the plunge. BTW, my nephew's name is Landon Pigg and he had a recent major label release called 'This is a Pigg'. He's got a myspace site and all that, but my point is that what the product turned out to be has absolutely nothing to do with what he actually is as an artist. The A&R people burned through all the money by hiring 'big gun' producers trying to make him into a 'rock star' when he could've done what Gene is doing and been much better off. Sorry, to have gone on for so long, but's it's invigorating to hear genuine, original talent in the infancy of it's bloom. |
