Well once again here comes the Gainsborough (Lincolnshire) old time music and dance festival. This year it's a week earlier being the 8th to 10th February at Castle Hills School, The Avenue, Gainsborough.

Guests this year are Piney Woods, a band featuring Kate Lissauer, Dave and Tim Bing and Jim Martin. They will be admirably supported by fellow Americans Adam Hurt and Beth Hartness. Holding up the UK honours will be the Down Trodden String Band and the Kitty Hawks. Dancers will have the pleasure of Kerry Fletcher's tuition and Kerry will be supported by fiddler Tim Brooks.

And if all goes according to plan we expect to have Mudcat's very own Fortunato and Suzette with with parts of their Shiver Show.

All that and more (as we always say!).... almost continuous sessioning, a bar, hot food, indoor (and outdoor - brrr!) camping (and no, you can't pitch a tent in the gymnasium, just make up a pallet on the floor as the song goes.

If you're a five string banjo player, you'll really need to get to this festival. Two of the world's best clawhammer players will be there on stage and in workshops. Tim Bing learned his playing as a young man at the cabins of the legendary Hammons family of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and Dwight Diller recommends him as being the best player of Hammons banjo music. He's not done much recording, but he's none the worse for that. I jammed with him at Glenville WV in 2006, and he knocked my socks off.
Adam Hurt is still in his early twenties, and started learning Old Time banjo in his home state of Minnesota as a very young schoolboy. Over the last ten years he has shone in the competitions held at US Old Time festivals, and earned a lot of respect from the Old Time world - the names of the people who wanted to be on his latest CD say it all. If you're an Old Time (or any other sort of) fiddler, then Adam Hurt, Kate Lissauer and Dave Bing, Tim Bing's brother will really get to you.
Dave's the best of the old style West Virginia fiddlers, while Kate's superb sound conveys all that's best about Old Time music. Adam's progress in the last 10 years is astounding.

I reckon it's somewhat different over there in the UK, but up home in Honeyville VA the alien abductions of cattle and other livestock have died down considerably now that the aliens have discovered moonshine. We understand from the regulars down at the Rebel Yell Diner that the demand has exceeded the supply and has pushed the price of 'shine up, as well as encouraged the reactivation of some stills up in Doval Holler that had been shut down these many years.
    So, ahem, if you want to keep your jackasses in pasture away from your festival and avoid the necessity of hiring a veterinary doctor to be on site, make more moonshine and sell it to your aliens.

I reckon you know that Tommy Jarrell sang the words below to The Greasy String, and it seems to suggest a slippery string that required the fiddler to 'mash down harder'.

    Nope, I just have a couple of the 'Legacy' cds, and some loose fraternization with fiddlers (ahem) like my old pal Craig Johnson, and I've been to Mt. Airy enough to catch the general atmosphere.

I listen to Tommy Jarrell on the I81 going south to Asheville and Galax and Fiddlers Grove, and I remembered his lyric about the "Greasy String". I also listen to Rafe Stefani's Glory on the Big String which I bought from him at Mt. Airy, and Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlman's Southern Summits. Festival preparation songs for the drive, you see.

If anybody needs to know what the British version of Old Time music sounds like then have a listen to
Five Miles From Town being played by some of our fiddlers (with me and others on banjo) at our Summer Camp in 2003. Everyone in this recording will be at Gainsborough, jamming through the weekend. The tune is from a great old Kentucky fiddler called Clyde Davenport who's still around and fiddling in his eighties.

Hmm, well Villan, the schedule isn't set in stone yet but both Friday night and Saturday nights will feature ALL our 'starring guests' (see above - but of course Fortunato and his wife will be added to that list too...).

Friday night concert starts at 7:30, Saturday's concert starts at 7:00.

Hello Villan I am in Beverley East Yorks.It was on a trip to Holland to visit my Nephew Who is Dutch "De Waal," and my niece, my sisters daughter, that I first joined Mudcat, this was set up on his computer in Holland, they and their children all call me Oombanjo, you don't have to guess why. They are staying at Bergen Op Zoom and my other nephew is at Kalmthout in Belgium.
There is an Ocarolins Bar in B.O.Z. That we go to on our visits and on one occasion Bill Sables "mudcat" and his group were playing the folk festival there. If you are at Gainsborough over the weekend give me a shout

The weather is distinctly iffy at the moment - one of my banjo students cancelled his lesson this morning because part of his roof has blown away. I'm sure it'll be better on the festival weekend - it had better be, so I can pitch my big tent by the main gate without hang-gliding over Gainsborough.

Only 6 days to go for the first O.T.Music festival of 2008. and my new Romero Banjo will arrive the week after,sicksicksick.
I have just had an email from Jason and the banjo with a sound clip of it will be on his new web site.
Still it will be in my itchy little hands for the next O.T.M.Festival at Sewerby over the May Day weekend.
Keep your eyes out for more news on the fest as the landlord of the local, is putting on another mini beer festival.
This is in honour of Jim, who last year got all the T-shirts by drinking 3 pints of every ale on stock and there were a lot of different ales.
We have another Dance team to join us this year, and now have our own boards on site.
For those that have been before you will be pleasantly surprised at the changes in the gardens. Tell me if you spot them.
For our friends over the pond if you put Sewerby House and Gardens into Goggle search you will see where we have 2 of our get togethers each year and the best thing about them, are they are free.

Well, Folks, The Shivers are packing up the guitar and banjo and autoharp. We've got our raincoats and umbrellas and fedoras and chapeaus and two tones and bow ties, etc., etc. In short, everything we need to travel over to London on a jet airplane (ahem) to Liz's house and company of our chum Micca and play some tunes with you all.
    Terry (Leadfingers) Silver and the lovely and talented Mary Smith are playing at Maidenhead on Thursday night and Terry's invited us to do a floor spot, so off we'll go to see, drop by if you can.
    And next morning at the crack of noon or one we'll drive up the left hand side of the road to Gainsborough to see all the UK folks crazy enough to love old time music. Some of which like Mrs. Duck have come to see the crazy folkies of FSGW at the Getaway, and so I've got some idea what I'm getting into.
      In short, we're A1,acme and extra fine and "repairing to leave" (that's country for fixin' to go).

NickP was gracious and attentive host and festival master and Claire guided us successfully to the stage and sheltered our instruments and matched my two tone shoes with her silver and black, and all the festival crowd were absolutely wonderful. We made many new friends,Adam Hurt & Beth Hartness,Kate Lissauer, and Trevor and Stuart from the Downtrodden Stringband and more.
    We had a grand time. Claire has asked that I write a review and I'll fill in the details and put it up here soon. We're at Heathrow now waiting for the plane. Had great times with oombanjo and the villain and the Ducks!
    Banjo Ray was grand, he helped us out on Friday with some quick and necessary banjo assistance, and we're very greatful.
    My beautiful bride is well, thanks to the many, many folks who were concerned.
    Special thanks to Liz and Paul who hosted us in London.
Our guide and navigator, Micca, led us up and down the country across the M25 and into and and out of the wilds of Heathrow, he was fantastic, period.

We had a terrific post festival session in the Ship in Gainsborough, when all the people who couldn't bring themselves to go home (including Piney Woods and Adam and Beth) brought their instruments. Tony the Landlord (who ran the festival bar and kept us in excellent beer) had some great food ready for us. We had three different sessions going in different parts of the pub. My team played a lot of C tunes, which I love, in the back bar. It's great to see all these superb musicians being completely relaxed in an informal setting, and having the best fun.
Unfortunately Adam, Beth and I had to leave at 10.45 to sleep so we could get up at 5am to get to Manchester Airport, but the others didn't quit until around 2:30 or so - I'm so jealous!

UK Old Time Music festival - Feb '09 Gainsborough

    First and foremost for Susette and me, the Gainsborough Old Time Festival will stand out in our memory because of the wonderfully welcoming people there. From Friday to Sunday we moved through a friendly sea of FOAOTMADs. And friends of the music and us they were. The school, while spacious, having many rooms and halls for jamming and gathering, still is an intimate environment for fiddles and banjos and clogging boards. Somehow the space and the warmth of the individuals set a beautiful tone.
    Nick and Claire Pilley, the hosts of the festival, were simply stellar. Years of experience and a genuine desire to facilitate a beautiful festival experience were evident in their hospitality and organization. For Susette and me, it was as good as it gets. Period.
Susette and I truly enjoyed our time on stage, and were pleased with the sound and overall production. Our MC, Bob Ward, gave informative and well-informed introductions, and brought us and all the acts on stage with a rousing welcome. It was tremendously gratifying to us that the UK audience enjoyed our take on Old Time Country Music and found our brand of humor enjoyable. Our workshop, Old Time Country Music Singing, was great fun for us. Susette's yodeling instruction may have started the latest craze; several folks told me they had carried on yodeling on Sunday.
    Gainsborough is Banjo Land, my friends. Witness how Tim Bing's Banjo Workshop was jammed, 36 banjos in one room. I'm not sure that's even legal in the states. If the Gainsborough festival isn't Banjo Heaven, then you can surely see it from there.
There were other opportunities for great workshops; one of Susette's favorites was Round Peak repertoire on Sunday with Adam Hurt & Beth Hartness providing a rare look at this almost unique and closely guarded body of tunes.
    Unfortunately I missed Beth's Round Peak guitar style workshop. I would like to know how much Round Peak has influenced her style. Beth's guitar backup to Adam's fiddle or banjo is clean and crisp and interactive. She weaves root notes and harmony notes into her bass runs, while holding the rhythm solid, and syncopates the cadence of the tunes. If you want to know how to play old time backup give Beth a listen. She's the real deal.
Adam's banjo playing is melodic and often wonderfully gentle, lending warmth to the tunes. And his recordings with Beth and others which came away with Susette have been providing the musical backdrop around our house since our return. Beautiful music.
    In concert, Kate Lissauer's singing and playing along with the Bing Brothers fine instrumental work was a highlight of the festival for me. Her voice and vocal style hits you right where old time music ought to, and reminds me strongly of another Marylander, Ola Belle Reed. Her banjo and guitar were extra fine, as well.
    Chats in the corridors and sitting in the dining hall were often strikingly memorable and filled out the corners of a genuinely rewarding festival experience.
In the end, it's a simple equation, really.   Excellent people, excellent music, excellent location and excellent organization equal a great festival. Susette and I hope to see you all again.

Guest Hootenanny - you say the location lets the festival down. Are you referring to Gainsborough, or the school?
If Gainsborough, then it's pretty much in the middle of the UK. Our (FOAOTMAD) membership of around 400 is fairly evenly spread and comes from Penzance, Thurso (both represented at the latest festival)and a lot of places in between. It's not too far from the A1 and the main North-South railway line.
If the school (Castle Hills Community College) then maybe you can find us somewhere as central, as reasonably priced and with comparable facilities and a helpful staff. A similar event in a school in Matlock was forced to close a few years ago because the site cost 4 or 5 times what ours does. Most of our costs are used for air fares and fees for American artists, not for the school.

Next years festival may well be the last on the present site, as the school is to be replaced by another new building near by. We do not yet know whether this building will be available, what facilities it will have or how much we would be charged. You could find major differences in entry fee, and we could end up with no possibility of an equivalent festival. This would be a terrible loss for all Brits who love Old Time music.

The indoor camping is basic stuff but it means you get FREE accommodation for the weekend and the use of a shower. You aren't forced to use it - there are hotels and B&Bs in and around Gainsborough. The restaurant food is excellent as is the bar, and the music is the best Old Time in the UK without a shadow of doubt.

I think you have it smack on.
The school provides an excellent place to hold the festival. In the middle of winter, at least you can be housed inside and from what I saw, the facilties were excellent.
Whats more a swimming pool next door and very good golf course next door, plus a town that is being revamped with very good shopping facilities.
Its very difficult to find anything better.
Sometimes I think some people do not appreciate what is involved in putting on such events.

Like many of our Appalachian families did, hers left NC during the depression and moved to north eastern Maryland. There she lived until her death in 2002.

Folks around Rising Sunlike to think of her as their own.

I think it more than adequately served as a venue and don't understand what more anyone would expect from in door camping other than a floor space and a shower! Many venues don't even offer that!

We get incredible freedom at the school for a minimal amount and are very grateful to them for allowing us almost free rein. As for the future (beyond next year) we have to hope that the new organisation will be as forgiving and generous.

In the meantime, the committee are looking for a paid up FOAOTMAD member to be co-opted into the role of festival coordinator (I've stood down after a number of years due to pressure of work). Any member who fancies a shot at being responsible to the rest of the membership should PM Banjoray.

Here's to next year and being able to join in...

I would like to thank all of the people who donated to the CLIC Sargent appeal or indeed bought the yellowbellies 2 CD.
With your help, I have now got to a total of £801.

Nickp, BanjoRay, Oombanjo, The Villain, Claire, et al,
    Susette and I saw Adam and Beth at a banjo festival last night at the Birchmere, a venue, here. We saw them at Fiddler's Grove last month, and we'll see them again at Galax where I hope to do some serious jamming with them.   
    I want to thank you for facilitating the forming of these new friendships. Such friendships are rare treasures.
    If you ever wonder if all your hard work on the festivals is worthwhile, one reward you can recall is the forming of great and often long lasting musical friendships.

Hi Chance - you're so right!
I hope to see Adam and Beth at Clifftop shortly. Are you guys going? I'll be there for a the whole week with a fiddler friend from Devon.

Next year's guest stars at the Gainsborough OT festival will be the New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters from Fries, Virginia, and I'm really looking forward to meeting those guys. We're all very enthusiastic about them.
