Subject: all bells in paradise ? info From: fogie Date: 07 Jan 08 - 06:14 AM This very strange carol seems a mixture of medieval imagery. I would appreciate the forum's thoughts on its origins and meaning. I suppose one of our number must have looked into its history, but it doesnt appear to be in the DT or to have a thread. My own thoughts about the song is that it reminds me of "the famous flower of serving men" and the Arthurian legend. |
Subject: RE: all bells in paradise From: fogie Date: 07 Jan 08 - 06:18 AM I've just Googled the words, and the text refers to the Journal of Folk Song Society No. 14 June 1910 an article by Annie Gilchrist relating to the Holy Grail. Anyone got access to this? |

Subject: RE: all bells in paradise From: dick greenhaus Date: 07 Jan 08 - 11:24 AM It's in DigiTrad--search for [Bells of Paradise] or Corpus Christi Carol. The notes there may be of help concerning the carol's background. |
Subject: RE: all bells in paradise From: Anne Lister Date: 07 Jan 08 - 12:04 PM I haven't read or got access to the Annie Gilchrist article, but I was intrigued enough to use it in my own MA dissertation about "Jaufre", which is an Arthurian tale in Occitan and features some imagery similar to the imagery in the Corpus Christi carol. Subject: RE: all bells in paradise From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Jan 08 - 01:56 PM I have added comment from A. L. Lloyd, "Folk Song in England," and from "The Oxford Book of Carols," to thread 10671, refreshed, Down in Yon Forest, which seems to be the best of the threads discussing and containing versions of this carol.
