Subject: XM broadcast
From: WFDU - Ron Olesko
Date: 28 Jan 08 - 12:06 PM

I just wanted to mention that if any Mudcatters happen to be subscribers to XM Satellite Radio, I will be this month's host for "Village Liberation". The program will be broadcast on Tuesday Jan. 29th at 12 noon Eastern time, with a re-broadcast on Friday February 1st at midnight (I guess technically that is Feb. 2!)

Village Liberation is a monthly series where XM "samples" a radio show from different locations in the U.S. and Canada. I'm really excited to be this month's guest, and I put together a two hour sampler of my radio work. It was really fun to put this together, and I feel incredibly honored to have been asked.

XM offers a free online trial - go to www.xmradio.com

I am a huge fan of XM. Their 24 hour folk channel offers a diverse selection - from field recordings to today's singer-songwriters. Folk music, however you choose to define it, needs a focal point. In the 50's and 60's it was places like Greenwich Village or Harvard Square, or the the Newport Folk Festival. Today, XM Radio offers a national voice in the U.S. and Canada and can be a huge unifing factor in our community. It can also offer an opportunity for others to discover what we already know and to help change the image that many people have when they hear the word "folk".   I highly recommend XM for this alone - plus there are many other great features.

Just a disclaimer - I do not get paid by XM!   I hope you can "tune in" on Tuesday or Friday!!

Ron Olesko

Damn, Ron. I have Sirius. I actually liked XM better (when you use rental cars weekly like I do you get to try them both) but I was given my Sirius radio as a gift.

Is this going to be archived online anywhere? I would love to listen in.

Mick

Unfortunately XM does not archive shows. They do have an online service, and a free trial, but it is only for live programming.

Thanks Jed. I am really excited about this. While I've been hosting a show in the NYC area for years, there is something exciting about being heard on a folk channel that can be heard all across the U.S. and Canada!   It is a real honor to be asked. I'm glad to have the opportunity to share some music and artists that are not regularly heard on XM.

I hate to toot my own horn, but it has been a really amazing month for me. I was also nominated for a Folk Alliance Award in the broadcasting catagory. To see my name alongside Rich Warren, John Platt, Susan Forbes Hansen and Mike Regenstrief was amazing. I have to admit, recognition feels good! Plus, the main thing is that the nomination and the XM broadcast helps spread the word about the good things we offer on WFDU. Anything that gets eyes and ears on WFDU helps us continue to do our work.

And this comes as a surprise to you, Ron? I have always found your insights to be right on the mark. This is just wonderful, but a natural chain of events. Enjoy your time and continue your quest to promote the music to ever wider audiences. We will see you along the way.

All the best,

Mick

It will be on Channel 15 - the Village. XM groups "folk" under their country channels!

He's playing a marvelous song right now called, "There's a Big Boat a'comin'". It tells the story of the 2002 floods in Prague and the elephant in the zoo (K'deara?)that was trapped. The elephant had heard the old story (passed down by elder elephants?) of the last time men had strayed, and a big boat was sent. Wonderful song. Ron, you need to get me the data on that one. I want the lyrics, and the name of the CD, please.

That was John Flynn's song "Big Boat Comin" from his CD "Dragon". He is a wonderful songwriter/performer from the Philly folk scene. His website is www.johnflynn.net and I highly recommend him!!

Ed McCurdy, doesn't get much better than that. He is singing his "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream". Greatly missed, that lad.

Damn, son, but I love the selection you are playing today.

"The Lock Keeper" by Stan Rogers is on right now, and it is one of my very favorite of his songs.

Great mix of songs, and the interview with Pete Seeger was priceless. Did I hear you say you interviewed him on the boat? Just doing the one-on-one interview had to be a very special moment for you, eh?

Folks, this is a wonderful show.

Mick

Thanks Mick!

I interviewed Pete at his home near Beacon a few years ago, and last year I intervied him again at the Beacon Sloop Club.

By the way, PBS will be broadcasting the documentary "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song" on February 27th on American Masters. Don't miss it!

I subscribe to XM and often listen here at work, but today I didn't have it on, until I read this thread during lunch!
I tuned in at about 12:50 and so got to hear the last half of the broadcast. Well, most of it, someone interrupted me just as the Pete Seeger interview was starting!
Great selection of songs!
Thanks Ron!

Susan

Thank you Susan & Mick, I appreciate your kind comments. It was really a thrill, and I am honored.

I highly recommend XM and especially the Village. Our folk community needs an outlet like this, and they do a wonderful job 24/7. If you are a subscriber to XM and listen to the Village, take a moment to write them a note. XM and Sirrius are supposedly going to merge, and there is a chance that folk channel could disappear based on the past history of Sirrius with folk music. Let them know you listen!
