Subject: BS: Waste

As in a stream of consciousmess a vision of the entire scope of waste raced before my eyes while I robotically prepared a cup of morning coffee.

Clearing the table of the left over corn, rice and chicken I saw the life of each as a young plant or animal but missing only the part of themselves for which they gave their life.
The ear of corn was missing only 20 kernals, the rice plant was missing only one sprig and the chicken a small part of its breast.
All the rest went to waste. Then the image of our now brain damaged soldiers were seen compared to their 6 year old selves.
The waste of great mountain sides could be seen for the ten minutes of heat we took from their coal seams below.

As if waste could be seen directly in all things all at once; in the car factories, the cafeterias, The great grocery stores pouring kerosene on countless dumpters full of past date food, the $billions in TV commercials, the wars and helpless victims everywhere in all times, I saw desertification of all the temperate zones on Earth and zoomed in on one small tribal family in the Amazon taking care to not waste a thing.

Then I dumped my half a cup of Columbian coffee down the sink, turned on the lights in the hall and went to warm up the car.

Waste, its a terrible thing to waste.

Such as went on at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and others, where entire herds were driven over the edge and killed?

While reading this I immediately went to a picture of a great movie I saw about 10 years ago. "The Gods Must Be Crazy". Why I began thinking of this movie? I'm not sure, but watch it if you haven't already.
Deep thinking Donuel.

The gods aren't crazy, but people are.

A great movie that -- if you get a chance, see also the next by the same director, "Animals Are Beautiful People".

Waste is the nature of Nature -- she has no narrow efficiency.

The most prolific inseminator, for example, might father 100 offspring in a polyamorous or promiscuous culture, in the course of his life.

Those 100 sperms cells are a pittance, as there are over 40 million of them in each average ejaculation. In each successful act the efficiently used cells are 1/40,000,000 of the total spent. Suppose he has forty fertile years, and through whatever means available ejaculates once every two days (fairly conservative assumptions). Those 7300 instances would produce in the region of 292,000,000,000 sperm cells. Thus the efficiency factor in terms of productive application of potential is on the order of 1/2.920,000,000 (one in 2.9 billion). Wasteful? I swan. (Well, I don't, actually, but I know someone who does....).

I don't get it. Surely they didn't throw the rest of the chicken away or the rice plant. While I accept there to be far too much waste in the world I don't get the connection.

I could have used that quote when I was suspended from 7th grade for writing an essay on evolution which began "Man and other animals..."
The teacher and principal would not adress evolution, they said they objected to the inflamatory salacious claim that man was an animal.
I was allowed to return to school only after a parent teacher conference.
