When it refers to Scotland is it Garlick, Gaylick, or Gallick (or anything else?)

Dave

Scots "Gallick" as in "Apple"
Irish "Gaelic" as in "Gay"
Now stop it.
Go to Scotland and wander around a bit.
You'll be fine.

Unfortunately, when it comes to rugby, "Gallic flair" refers to the French team.

(Ducks)

They did have a question in a TV quiz programme (English-based).
"To what country does Gallic refer?" (not spelled out, just said)
Correct answer, France.
But I did wonder what they would have said if someone had answered, "Scotland" - as it certainly would have been correct phonetically.
Gaelic speakers in Scotland do almost put an h in it too, "gah-lic" -just to further confuse the enquirer!

The Gauls of France were Celts as were the Gaels of British Isles. The same difference.........

I think that the correct Gaelic proununciation is "Gay-lee-guh" but some of my Irish
friends will have to corroborate that. Go raith mo hagut (did I get this right? Probably not).

Frank, what you are attempting, and pretty well I might add, to phoneticize is the name of the language know in English as Irish. Many folks think that Gaelic is what Irish folks would speak. It is written modern Irish, using English letters as Gaeilge. And the phrase you wrote to end the post means thanks. Go raimh maith agat, pronounced roughly gur-ra mah agate, is one of the ways you would spell it. Keep in mind that their are a number of different pronounciations based on the part of Ireland, but the most noticeable differences occur in Ulster and the north.

Le gach dea-mhéin, (all the best,)

Mick

On the tribute album for Hamish Henderson, there are 3 tracks by the great man himself. The third is 'Mouth Music' which has a brief verbal coda explaining the nature of the beast. Therein, Hamish pronounces 'Gaelic' as 'Garlick'.

I omitted to mention the album title: 'A' the Bairns O Adam' Greentrax CDTRAX244. A wonderful album!

I also went to a Gaelic speaker - which explained my pronunciation of the Julie Fowlis track being reasonably close - he says Gallic too- with just a hint of an "H"

I assume you mean a Scots Gaelic speaker, Dave? Or was it someone who spoke Ulster Irish? Very similar pronounciations, but those skirt wearers keep way the hell too many consonants in their spellings. Comes from their stuff being exposed to the elements.

Scots gaelic speakers pronounce it "gallick", without exception, in my experience.
