Surely the greatest omission is the Leader catalogue, whose output included the Percy Grainger recordings, the Masters of Irish Music series, plus various solo Lps of singers like Eddie Butcher, John Maguire, Walter Pardon, Cecilia Costello, George Dunn, the Copper Family and Jack Elliott. And that's not to mention some very fine LPs of American musicians and singers, plus the Edith Fowke edited compilation, Far Canadian Fields.

Unfortunately, Leader went under in the oil crisis of the 1970s, the catalogue was sold, and practically nothing from that catalogue has been seen from that day to this. A whole chunk musical heritage obliterated.

'Nowt so good will pass' by Bob Fox and Stu Luckley would be my choice, if I hadn't already digitised and burned it.

Well, I'm interested in more than just an individual album here and there. Since the Folkways and Folk-Legacy catlogues are now available, I'd like to see the entire Elektra Catalogue on CD. Then, to get a 'flavour' of the other side of the ocean, let's have Folktrax and Topic.

P.S. from Zhenya

In case it isn't clear when you see the page with the Eritage album, if you click on the track title, you'll be able to listen to the whole track.

I still have quite a few LPs around that have never made it onto CD, although a few have started showing up as digital downloads, skipping the CD stage altogether.

My favorite one hasn't made it to CD or download, as far as I know: "La Ronde des Voyageurs", by the Quebecois group Eritage.

This was actually on Stan Rogers' Fogerty's Cove label, and most of his own LPs are now available as CDs, but for some reason, this one was never made available.

Luckily, one of the band members posted the whole album online, and you can listen to it here:

La Ronde des Voyageurs - Eritage

I've made my own rather inexpert CD version, and would be happy to buy a better quality commercial CD if one becomes available. (I still sometimes listen to the LP as well, when I'm not being lazy!) But I don't want it out on CD only for my own sake, but because I want more people to discover it and know about it.

Anything on Free Reed--- English Melodeon Players (which I've already
converted to CD) comes to mind first and foremost.

Number 6

I was referring to an LP called The Blues Project. The band with that name came along later and,I believe, was only marginally related to the LP.

There were 2 albums (Avenue Road and Aardvark) by a Toronto band called Kensington market. Far as I know there has never been a cd copy released ... the vinyl versions are now probably held by collectors who would only release them at a premium.

The other is a collection of Jimmy Webb songs by Richard Harris called the "Yard went on Forever".

Number 1 on my list would be The Blues Project, an Elektra LP from the sixties that was mentioned on the recent Ian Buchanan thread. In addition to IB's Winding Boy, the album contained multiple songs by the likes of John Koerner, Geoff Muldauer and Dave Ray. For some reason it's never been released on CD. Anyone else have a favorite from the past that has never made it to CD? And for those of you who know more than I about the record business - which is most of you I'll bet - what goes into the decision to re-release an old album in a new format? And is there any way we can influence that decision?

Mike
