I'd love to see the extended version of Avatar, but haven't yet. I liked Avatar more than any other movie I've seen in...oh...maybe 20 years. Loved it, in other words.

I saw the "Director's Cut" of "Robin Hood" too...so I gather there were some extra scenes in that, but I don't know which scenes those would have been.

Has anyone mentioned the extended version of Avatar? The extra 11 minutes, really fleshed things out and made the story more clear. More scenes of Na'vi life and explanations of the tech of the planet and the finer plot points. They make a great movie considerably better.

I just watched that recent Robin Hood movie with Russel Crowe. I loved it. I gather that the critics and most of the public were not so well impressed. I liked it because it seemed like a real medieval story for a change, rather than just doing the usual romanticized typical Robin Hood story. It was wonderful visually, Cate Blanchett was stunningly good, as always, and everybody else suited their parts well too. It was a serious treatment of Robin Hood for a change...totally blows the silly Kevin Costner thing out of the water. It also showed characters like Richard the Lionheart and Prince John as flawed and complex characters...shades of gray, in other words...not your standard all-good-and-noble-Richard, all-bad-and-despicable-John, but real people with both strengths and quite notable weaknesses. That's refreshing! By golly, real people for a change instead of stereotypes. Rodney's treacherous role moving his loyalties between the King of France and the King of England was pretty typical of the sort of intrigue that was going on back then. All the royal families were related, and a clever knight might end up serving one line or another on his way up the ladder. Lots of good stuff in that movie. Was it flawed? Yeah...but it was a far more realistic portrayal of life back then than any other Robin Hood film I've ever seen. (As for the actual story of Robin Hood...that's almost entirely fiction...but so what? It's a good story.)

Just watched a sweet, poignant film called A Very Serious Person. Rog and I both enjoyed it.

Ad., I'd forgotten. I'd seen Hearts in Atlantis years ago, after I'd read the book it is based on, which I highly recommend. The book is very good, as is the movie. Thanks for the reminder!

I watched this very strange movie last night called Repo a Genetic Opera starring Anthony Head from Buffy as the Repo Man, who repossesses artificial organs if you cannot pay for them....it has everything one desires in a musical, bad lyrics, lots of blood and gore, all sorts of campiness....it ranks right up there with the classic Cannibal! A Musical.

Just watched Black and White, recommended by Beer, who heard of it from someone else way back up thread. Excellent movie and the interview afterwards of the "accused" Max Stuart was really interesting and moving. Thanks, again, for the recommendation.

The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo...had me clenching my fists and grinding my teeth at times...but it was great to see the movie baswed on the book by StiEg Larson, who recently passed away. hE HAS 3 BOOKS

The Dam Busters on BBC4. First saw it with my dear old Dad in 1956 or so, still holds up even though we now know that the bombs didn't look like that!

The "N" word reappeared in this version which is maybe why it was on at 2300 hrs. Must say it does make one wince a bit today.

katlaughing, my wife also commented on Kristofferson playing the fiddle without moving his fingers. LOL. The story was a bit murky while trying to be mystical but the acting was thoughtful, with fine supporting performances by Genevieve Bujold, Gary Farmer (that's how I stumbled on this indie flick, looking for more Gary Farmer roles) and Gary Sanderson who played Larry with the the two brother Darryls on "Newhart". Also a fine breakout performance by Charlie McDermott as Kristofferson's son Wild Bill. He's the kid who plays Axl Heck on ABC comedy "The Middle". And yes the scenery was breathtaking. One might almost say it was the "lead" in this film.

We saw RED the other night. RED stands for "retired - extremely dangerious". It was silly, goofy, - totally over the top. And great fun. I mean - how can you turn down Helen Mirren with a machine gun?

Just watched it, Neil. Thanks for the recommendation. It was a little disjointed and strange at first, almost as though Kristofferson just wanted to play around with his friends, other superb actors and actresses, but then I got into it and understood it better. Haunting to say the least and my goodness there were a lot of people who donated to bring it about. Made me go to paperbackswap.com and order one of Mosher's books about Kingdom County and the scenery was beautiful. The only thing I wish is that Kris, whom we all know is a musician, would have at least moved his fingers on the fiddle whilst he pretended to play it!:-) I hate when they don't at least try to fake it.

Less than ten bucks a month gets you one movie via the mail with a prepaid return envelope, then they send another, but the really neat thing is they have tons of movies you can watch for free on their website. We watched four of eight episodes of Pillars of the Earth, tonight, and can't wait to see the rest. So, it's not just movies, there are all kinds of television programs, docus, etc. Lots of BBC stuff. We really enjoy it. (You can pay more to get more DVDs at a time at home, but we average four movies a month that way, plus whatever we watch online.

"Shutter Island" was real good in my opinion. Pretty well any movie with Leonardo DiCaprio in it is guaranteed to be good these days. That guy is a class actor, and he'd like to forget the part he did in "Titanic" just as much as a lot of other people would too. ;-)

Oh My. I just finished watching "Black and White". I was told a while back that any movies made in Australia be sure to watch. Now I have not had the time to check if it was made there or not, but what a great movie. Thank you to the person who recommended it. I will go back and check the 200 or so post and find who you are.

A few weeks back I watched a movie called "The World's Fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins. It may have already been mentioned above but if not it is a classic. Based on a true story.

Check out Last Chance Harvey, a wonderful piece of improvisation by Dustin Hoffmann and Emma Thompson. It's the story of how two people "our age" stumble into love.
And most of the dialogue was improvised by these two great actors.

Just saw "Hubble," an Imax, 3D film about the Hubble space telescope. Lots of great images and footage inside the space station. Wonderful viewing of a launch from the space center.

A very fine experience.

I watched Misery again at a friend's house on the weekend and enjoyed it as much as ever. Kathy Bates is amazing as the obsessed 'number one fan' and really did Stephen King's book justice and the best acting role I have ever seen James Caan in.

"Winter's Bone" - the movie "Deliverance" could have been if it had been much better.

Relentlessly ugly portrayal of American rural poverty and desperation. Dialogue kept to the absolute minimum. Terrific lead performance.

Just watched a Belgian film, "Hop." Really good. It's available online at Netflix. Here's the blurb, though it doesn't do it justice:

Let the Right One In - An excellent Swedish film in which a bullied 12 year-old boy befriends a young girl who lives in his block of flats, and discovers a long-held secret.

It's a beautifully shot, well-written and brilliantly acted piece of cinema, and is in turns subtle, shocking but never anything less superb. It's an antidote to the dross of Hollywood and proves there are intelligent, thoughtful and inventive film-makers still working in the world today.

Incidentally, it appears a Hollywood studio is remaking the film (the original having subtitles makes it difficult for some apparently) but please please don't wait for it as it will not better the original film. In fact, if it comes from Hollywood chances are it'll be a bag of shite remake that ditches subtly and storytelling for the usual crap they churn out of LA these days.

I love netflix online. Had fun watching an endearing movie last night with Eddie Murphy in it, as well as a remarkable little girl. It was called Imagine That and was a "feel-good" movie served up with LOL gentle humour. I haven't watched anything with him in it for a number of years, so was really glad to see he has not lost his touch.
