Recently, I enjoyed True Grit, and The Fighter, both primarily because of some fine acting turns by Christian Bale in The Fighter and Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit.
True Grit has to be the ultimate exercise in the Coen Brothers' penchant for articulate but inappropriate dialogue. Since Raising Arizona, where all of the characters speak in a sort of rustic amalgamation of Shakespeare and Mark Twain, I have looked forward to more. In the original True Grit, I really liked the formal way the characters spoke, a reflection of the sort of rather stilted diction that can be witnessed in contemporary newspapers of the old west. In the Coen Brothers' version, the argument between Steinfeld and the Stable owner is destined to be a classic scene.
Jeff Bridges also has some great lines, but he grunts and growls so many of them that it gets a little frustrating trying to decipher.

I realize the dialogure was from the novel, Wes. It was just such a good fit with the Coen Brothers' style, that it almost had to happen.

Mrs. Fenswoman bought 'To Kill A Mockingbird' on DVD, and we watched it twice this past weekend. Fantastic film, one of the best IMHO.
I love B&W films - so atmospheric.

Yeah, well, we all got our tastes, eh? I would watch black and white movies if ya payed me to, I guess...

But otherwise no way, eh? Get real!

The real weerd thing is that the world useta BE in black and white and that is why all them old movies look that way. It hadda do with some kind of shift that happened or somethin' but people in them old times just hadda put up with everything bein' in black and white or shades of grey. The thing I can't figger is why there was racial trouble back then, eh? It don't really make no sense?

Anyways, along about the 19-flippin'-50s sometime colour started comin' in in bits and patches...here and there...you hadda be in the right place to catch it, eh? I think there was even a few insidents in the 40's of color but they was rare. So by aobut 1960 there was colour almost everywhere and black and white movies natcherally ended by then. We now live in a world of total colour!

Nature is weerd, eh? People preetend like they undetrstand this stuff, but they are foolin' thems3elves. Them paintings you see of Romans and Jesus in colour are not right. They been colorzied after the fact.

We went to see The King's Speech the other day. I think that this was one of the best movies that I have seen in many years.

The story was spellbinding and the acting sublime. Kendall said that he wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. If this film doesn't sweep the Oscars there ain't no justice.

I think the film I've most enjoyed on TV, ever, is part 1 of Edgar Reitz' 'Heimat' trilogy (Part 1 is serialised, and subtitled 'A Chronicle Of Germany').
It first appeared in the UK in London in 1984 as a 10 hour movie(!) It's a masterpiece.

A movie that I saw again a short while ago is 'Pleasantville'. A good film, but check out Fiona Apple's version of 'Across the Universe' on the soundtrack.

Favourite film and Soundtrack is 'Barry Lyndon'.

I saw SHALL WE DANCE on the coach from Boston yesterday, and although it is not my kind of film, in places it is very funny. I'd bet most women would love it. Richard Gere was the star.

Some films are better to be seen in black and white, it can add to the mood of the times that it was made in (depressed, broke or both!). Some of the Fred Astaire/Ginger Roger films in b&w look so classy and the Beatles Hard Days Night can only be in b&w. The change from black and white to technicolour worked really well in the Wizard of Oz but that was a fantasy film anyway. I don't think it works so well when it's attempted today not sure why that it is. Mel Brooks had a success with the Young Frankenstein the subject based on old Hammer type horror was going to make it more likely to be a success anyway.

Winter's Bone was amazing. We had a thread open about this indie masterpiece last year and I'm surprised it didn't get refreshed since it was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture. One of the finest examples ever of how to tell a gripping story on film on a low budget, of how to achieve suspense and intensity without CGI and blowing stuff up. The breakout performance of it's 20 year old star, Jenifer Lawrence, was simply stunning. Some pretty cool authentic mountain music as well.

Check out Restrepo. It's a documentary about the war in Afghanistan. It brings you as close to combat as you can without actually being shot.

The Last Waltz! Can't believe this thing is 35 years old and I just saw it for the first time a few months ago! Ran out and bought it. I've watched(or listened)to it 20 times or more since then. Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson better known as "The Band", makes one proud to be a Canadian! Levon is an honorary Canuck!

A wry black comedy satirising both sides of the pro/anti choice abortion 'debate'.

Would work well in a very entertaining themed double bill for intelligent teenagers with "Juno"

Just watched Stone of Destiny about Ian Hamilton and the other students who took the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey returning it to Scotland in 1950. The real Ian Hamilton even played a small part, though I didn't know until it was over, so can't place him. The only thing I didn't like was the arrangement of and woman who sang Wild Mountain Thyme at the end. She sounded slightly flat and, imo, it was over-produced. Still a good flick.:-)

Not a movie, but a BBC series we started watching at netflix tonight: George Gently, an excellent chief inspector crime show set in the 60s in Northumberland, though filmed, at least the two we've seen, so far, in Ireland. Reminded us a bit of Inspector Morse, as Gently, too, has a younger "sidekick," is from the Yard and a bit curmudgeonly. Quite good!
