What could it be? Why will they eat almost anything without objection? Why are they almost always excited and enthused by anything new that you offer them? Why do they not care who you vote for or what shoes you decide to wear?

Could it be that they are smarter than we are????

While some dogs are rather uncritical, others are quite discriminating in their tastes. One really shouldn't make blanket statements about entire species, you know. I suspect that it is your anthrocentric point of view that limits your perceptions of the rich variety of dog experience.

Because them are so much dumber than cats.

Someone had to say the truth!

That's not to say that having a dog as a loyal pet isn't good. Just don't count on his advice when you can't meet the next payment on your adjustable subprime mortage.

Cheerily,

So will you share your cats wisdom on adjustable subprime mortgages with us, Charlie?

And I think cats are not more intelligent than dogs - especially when it comes to politics: a cats answer on any political question will be MAO. Even the Chinese are getting more critical about him now...

Cats are psychopaths. They really only care about themselves. They barely tolerate another cat's presence unless it is mating time. They will let you pet them IF they want you to pet them and ONLY if they want you to pet them. And then they can go off and some times they really go OFF!

Dog are oriented to others. They find their identity in a pack. The are fiercely loyal, keen observers have incredible sense of smell. The will fight when they have to and won't give up ( not quite true of ALL dogs though). They don't care about who you are or what you are. The love you unreservedly. The aren't necessarily smarter, just less encumbered by our problems. They keep it simple and what they do, they do well. They save human lives, often and can be trained to do the same. When is the last time you saw a rescue cat? Or a team of cats pulling a sled? Fetching game? Leading a blind person? Sniffing out explosives? Killing cats?

Oh, COME ON! Cats kill everything they can get their claws and fangs into. Mice, gerbils, squirrels, birds, birds and more birds, lizards and the bigger cats like Bobcats and Pumas kill dogs and people. So give me a break!

Dogs are wonderful animals and if you have a cat, well, that fine too. Just keep it on a leash when out of doors.

I'm afraid dogs DO criticize. For instance, my father had a wonderful German Shorthair, bred 3/4 field champion. He would hunt upland game, point and hold the point until you released him. He would fetch game with a tender mouth and if ever the bird was still alive that's how he returned it to your hand, still alive. He never once chewed a bird. But... if you flushed a bird and missed your shot he'd really cuss you out. He was greatly indignent if he began to run after the bird's track and the bird didn't drop. He was good; he knew he was good and YOU had better be good too!

I guess, like people, some dog are and some aren't. Critical, that is.

I have lived among the critters being discussed and I have a couple of things that I always keep in mind:

First, always remember that dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Second, never.....I repeat.....never believe that you are as good as your dog thinks you are.

All the best,

Mick

Our collie seems to have a permanently split personality.

The pointy end with teeth growls ferociously at exactly the same time as the fluffy tail end is wagging away furiously.

Its a talent she has. Confuse the humans then they can't possibly know what you're thinking, what mood you're in or what you're going to do next ?????????????

If cats have staff clearly people living in the same household with a cat ARE staff.

This does not lead to the conclusion that dogs are dumber than cats. But it might suggest that cats are more intelligent than the humans in the same household. At least as those who quote the abovementioned saying without noticing that they in quoting it make themselves inferior to cats.

Actually, Dex gets upset if I throw his frisbee and it goes somewhere he doesn't expect. He thinks he's got the calculus thing pretty well figured out, but he hasn't learned that the calculus no longer works when the frisbee is so chewed that it won't fly right.

There's a book called "Dogs never lie about love" (it's got some good scientific material in it, and some photos of laughing dogs - yes, really - on the cover), in which there's one observation that intrigues me. Briefly, when two dog-people meet, with their dogs, and speak, and then move on, the dogs go with their "owners". We've all seen it. The author remarks that dogs must be the only creature that prefer the company of another species to that of their own.

The fart thing reminded me of my guy, Riley. He has such an expressive face, and he is smart as hell. He was laying with his head on my lap. He didn't lift a muscle with the exception of his tail. It went straight up in the air, this whistling sound....phweeeeeeeeeeeeehug....comes out, and the most gawdawful smell ever. My eyes were tearing up, and he lifts his head, and looks me straight in the eye. I swear he was saying, "Let's see you do that, Skippy!". That made me laugh out loud, which made me inhale, which made me gag...... and the ladies in the house were sitting there just laughing at the scene.

All the best,

Mick

My dogs eat once a day, usually in the evening after a walk. They gobble it down in about 90 seconds. I pick up a handful of the chunks from each bowl before they start eating so when each finishes her bowl she looks to me for the rest, not to the other's bowl. I have them do a few tricks and to catch chunks of food tossed to them. My pit bull has the funniest way of catching, crunching, and burping all at once.

Nick, forgotten and much more dangerous : Cat-holicism.
On the other hand there's a cat-walk (for models); not bad at all.

I do believe, that dogs mostly behave like their owners are.

This wasn't meant completely cat-ty, but nevertheless...

By thinking this thread over I came to the result, that dogs are not uncritical. On the contrary, they are mighty clever. They just do what human beings do expext and consequently they are in a situation to lead a comfortable life. You really do not know what they are thinking by doing foolish things just to please their family and... to get a fantastic meal.

We are sitting here on a snowy nite, listening to the Prarie Home
