A modest proposal.

Every now and then discussions and debates turn nasty here , and people start throwing insults at even other. This can derail interesting discussions,

My suggestion is that we have a dedicated thread reserved for this - so when a dispute gets nasty in that way, the people involved just move to it for the insulting and the recrimination. Meanwhile the discussion about the issues raised can carry on.

The idea being, you'd just start the post in the original thread with a link to the insults thread, indicating the identity (or pseudonym) of the intended party with whom you are engaged in combat. Then carry on with any actual arguments about the topic.

If we could do that I think it could improve the discussions. And the insults thread might be quite an entertaining place to visit, even for people who didn't feel inclined to contribute...

I think it might be useful if the reposts were clever and funny. I think of Mark Twain or
Dave Barry here.

Most of the insults deteriorate to crude scatology, though. They are not funny or clever and render the "insulter" as being silly, stupid or foolish.

The idea of promoting aggressive behavior for it's own sake is not useful but if we have
a budding H.L. Mencken on the thread, then that becomes entertaining and not a total
waste of time. it would be nice to have the invective turned toward the invectee occasionally.

I'd like to take this excellent suggestion one step further. Perhaps we could compile an archive of ready insults, with numerical referents, to facilitate exchange of vitriol, and to save the time and energy involved in the reformulation of previously-employed insults. For instance, using the gems already uttered in this thread:

Eventually, a search function could be added, such that if you type in a keyword such as 'Irish' or 'commie', a whole string of insults will appear, from which you can make a selection.
