Subject: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Declan Roche Date: 14 Dec 10 - 05:19 AM The Meeting Place is where I first heard the brilliant and inventive guitar playing that was Jimmy. Sundays with Red was a mind-blowing(!) experience for me as an 18 year old. Turn Around, Caledonia, Spotlight,That's alright Mama...I still remember all the words. The crowd going nuts for more, the guitar sparring with Pat Farrell, the thunder of Fran Breens drums and the faces he pulled. Part of the soundtrack of my youth. For that alone I am grateful. But Jimmy was more than that. He had a great sense of humour and sometimes he only had to say a couple of words to have the audience laughing especially when he was ordering drinks from the stage. He was one of the most versatile guitar players I've ever seen. The stuff he did with Hotfoot was note perfect against Pat Collins fiddle with Jimmy Gibson providing rhythm. I saw some of the very early Hotfoot gigs in the Meeting Place when there was only a few in attendance. With the two Jimmys and Pat it just had to work and of course it did. I was lucky enough to have been at some of the recording of Christy Moores live in Dublin album...still great. The turnout for his tribute in the Olympia says it all. He was held in such high esteem and affection by thousands. He was a legendary guitar player and he was a nice man. Rest in Peace. I hope you're in heaven and Jesus and the saints are jumpin'. The world is a lesser place without you. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Tadhg, Cork. Date: 26 Jan 10 - 12:06 PM The gig was filmed by Se Merry Doyle, an award winning film maker according to Hot Press magazine. His company is called Loopline. I contacted him and he says he filmed it on spec and hoped to get some finance together to do something with it. That was shortly after the gig though so he mustn't have had any luck.. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Dorothy Date: 13 Jun 09 - 10:13 PM Well late as it is - I felt compelled to post a tribute to Jimmy. I have lived in Australia for 24 years now and only just found out about Jimmy's passing. Back in Dublin in the 70's I never missed a Red Peters Floating Blues Band Sunday session at the Meeting Place and used to live at the Baggot Inn and remember those truly great days of fun, great music, Guiness and lots of hows your Father. When himself, Red, Declan and the others got going at the Meeting place - it was dynamite, tiny stage that it was. Witnessed moments of some of the best blues playing I can ever remember. Jimmy was as well known and respected face around the Dublin music scene and I admit I used to fancy the knickers off him and his gorgeous smile - with no success mind you. Vale Jimmy - thank you for the soaring riffs, the great times and the great music. May your spirit rise and watch over the rest of the blues gang to make sure they keep in tune. Sincere condolences to Pauline and family - I am sure that you miss him so much. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: Declan Date: 06 Jun 09 - 11:02 AM Guest, Thanks for reviving this thread. Reading through it again brings back many happy memories of listening to Jimmy. It was difficult to be unhappy when you were listening to him. There was a great tribute concert held in memory of Jimmy in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin last September. It was a great night and the line-up on stage reflected the esteem that Jimmy was held in by those who were lucky enough to have heard him or worked with him. It would be great if this could be an annual event. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Guest Date: 15 Mar 08 - 08:14 AM The problem with Jimmy was that very often he would get a bigger round of applause than the "star" he was backing.I remember on one occasion as the "star" was introducing the musicians at the end of the gig, Jimmy and only Jimmy got a standing ovation.... How often has it happened that a good performer or group adds Jimmy to the line up and all of a sudden it goes from good to sublime... I'm so glad I witnessed your amazing gifts Jimmy, The world is a lesser place without you...... |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Donnacha Date: 14 Mar 08 - 11:28 AM Jimmy's gigs with The Houseshakers were the pinnacle of music. There were no limits to his playing or musical imagination. There were times when Jimmy played solos so beautiful and exquisite as to be not of this world. He also loved to play endlessly with songs and very frequently simply did not want a song to end. The pleasure on the faces of his fellow band members said it all - night after night. I truly miss you Jimmy. May You Stay Forever Young. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Mick Treacy Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:24 PM I was sad to hear of Jimmy's passing, I first met in 1967 he was with a group called 'Gypsy's Poetry' in the Castle Inn. He was hardly out of the pram but boy how he could play guitar, I always felt that he must have started when he was in that pram because he was born to play. He'll be sadly missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner. From: GUEST,Jimi Slevin Date: 10 Mar 08 - 07:29 AM I never worked with Jimmy, but have met him on many occasions over the years, and we've spoken, laughed and swapped yarns on many's the occasion. Jimmy was simply a great guy and superb musician. He effortlessly embraced and mastered many diverse styles and added the master's touch to countless fine studio productions. He even successfully tackled that Django Reinhardt Gypsy Swing style with the wonderful 'Hotfoot' back in the '80s. What a great little combo they were, and I'll never forget those smoky, Guinnessy nights in the Baggot with Jimmy's powerful, mused playing ringing through the rafters! In my opinion Jimmy Faulkner was more that just a nice guy and great guitarist who will be sadly missed. He was a major talent. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST Date: 10 Mar 08 - 02:59 AM E.Farrell - San Diego, CA RIP Jimmy........ very sad news to loose such a great guitarist. I was very fortunate to stumble across an inpromptu gig @ The Grand Parade Hotel in Cork Jazz Festival around 1987. Mary Coughlan took a break and never came back............ this guy Jimmy Faulkner stepped up and played with the band - drifting far from jazz and into many excellent covers which of course were completely unrehearsed but made for one of the most memorable gigs I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. The great Robbie Brennan was on drums that night........ I'm just glad to be able to say I got to see "The Master"................. Thanks giving me the memory that I'll cherish forever! |

My deepest sympathy to Pauline and family. He was a lovely gentleman in every sense of the word and a brilliant musician. I had the privilege of hearing him play many times and each time it was a new feast for the senses. Rest in Peace Jimmy PS: A horse is a horse of course of course - Mr Ed - another Declan and Jimmy special. I often sing sheep to sheep to myself when I'm having those 'weird mother' moments and forgot the origins of it - thanks for prodding the memory |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,MRS FLANNERY- Date: 08 Mar 08 - 01:45 PM At the breaks in Tullamore Jimmy and Declan used to a version of as he called it "Out together dancing Sheep to Sheep" .He also did a great mock take guitar solo on Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo. Those were the fun side of Jimmmy. But when the band reassembled the transdensation to wistful spinetingling ,goosepimpling& hair-raising riffs and breaks seemed as if he was possessed by some musically superior demons of the happiest species |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: Declan Date: 07 Mar 08 - 08:38 PM I've been trying to remember what songs Jimmy did when Red was taking a break. As far as I remember Boney Moroney and Come Down from the Mountain Katy Daly were two of his favourites. Anyone remember any others? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Bill Grogan Date: 07 Mar 08 - 06:28 PM ...as The Red said when referring to the band, "these guys can stand on any stage in the world and play with anyone." I think Jimmy was 61. The atmosphere in the Meeting Place was unique. As The Red said one night, "you smell like a lovely audience..." I also remember Jimmy's duels with Pat. The sad thing is Jimmy was always getting better and better, with The House Shakers he really rocked. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2 From: GUEST,Guest,Non Resident Date: 07 Mar 08 - 06:03 PM Sorry about the length of this but one sentence is not enough - From a sixteen year olds viewpoint the Sunday afternoon sessions in The Meeting Place is something to look back on and thank God I was their to witness it all - The Floating Dublin Blues Band - and no one was more floating than Jimmy. Pat Farrel, Declan Mc Ginnis, Fran Breen, Redmond and Jimmy. I was probably one of the only non-"smoking" and non-drinking in the audience so perhaps my memories would stand up in court When Red took a well earned break it was Jimmys "chance" to stand centre stage and sing - not something he did too often. I think it was Imagine - but I stand corrected. What I will never forget are the duelling riffs between himself and Pat - two totally different styles but a fantastic sound. I can only imagine what this sounded like to the drinking and smoking community in the audience- I missed something perhaps. When I heard the news - yesterday 6 march - I checked out all the You tube links and of course it does not do him justice. I have some "snaps" of Jimmmy I took in the boat club in Clontarf last year after he played there but the qualtiy is nothing to write home about. What more can you say - I am thankful I witnessed some of Jimmy greatness - AD |

Upstairs at the Meeting Place, at the Baggot Inn, Graystones, all over. His playing was fluid like water, beautiful with grace. He could get into a song like nobody else. We shared many great long nights of music and fun. There will never be another time like that and never another player like him. |
