Its hard to let go of the past. Jimmy you represented a magical time in Ireland. A time I would not have missed for anything. But Ireland will miss you. Good night Jimmy sleep with the angels. I hope you get the reward in heaven that you did not get in life. You were the personification of the GUITAR MAN. And a gentleman.

Good bye Jimmy xxxxxxx

Jimmy's gigs with The Houseshakers were the pinnacle of music. There were no limits to his playing or musical imagination.

There were times when Jimmy played solos so beautiful and exquisite as to be not of this world. He also loved to play endlessly with songs and very frequently simply did not want a song to end. The pleasure on the faces of his fellow band members said it all - night after night.

I truly miss you Jimmy.

May You Stay Forever Young.

The problem with Jimmy was that very often he would get a bigger round of applause than the "star" he was backing.I remember on one occasion as the "star" was introducing the musicians at the end of the gig, Jimmy and only Jimmy got a standing ovation....
How often has it happened that a good performer or group adds Jimmy to the line up and all of a sudden it goes from good to sublime...
I'm so glad I witnessed your amazing gifts Jimmy, The world is a lesser place without you......

Jimmy played a lot in the Lobby with Kieran Halpin,Mick Hanley,Mairtin O'Connor,Frankie Lane,Pete Cummins, Niall O'Callanain and Eugene Brosnan. It was always great to see his magic playing close up and chat with him after gigs.P.J. Curtis did a 30 minute radio interview with him in the early 80's and he would be the ideal man to write the biography. Over to you P.J.!

I was GREATLY saddened to hear, only this week,of Jimmy's passing,we became good friends in the early 70's,Jimmy was living in salford,at his sisters house, next door to ours.If anyone knows Jimmy's family ,would you please pass on my condolences. He was a lovely man and the world is much the poorer for his going.

there are a few of my messages on various web pages, just hoping someone will be able to forward the gist of it to his family.

Guest,

Thanks for reviving this thread. Reading through it again brings back many happy memories of listening to Jimmy. It was difficult to be unhappy when you were listening to him.

There was a great tribute concert held in memory of Jimmy in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin last September. It was a great night and the line-up on stage reflected the esteem that Jimmy was held in by those who were lucky enough to have heard him or worked with him.

It would be great if this could be an annual event.

Declan,
if this concert in Jimmy's memory does turn into an annual/regular event,PLEASE put something in here about it,it must be obvious,by my contribution, how much cover the Irish music scene gets over here.I will bookmark this page and look in regularly.Anyone else, please don't forget the last sentence in my first piece, but only if it won't resurrect their grief

many thanks Barry Lewis(Jimmy's mate from Salford)

Barry

I haven't heard of any plans to have another tribute, but I'll keep my ears open and if I hear anything is happening I'll try to remember to post the details here.

Well late as it is - I felt compelled to post a tribute to Jimmy. I have lived in Australia for 24 years now and only just found out about Jimmy's passing. Back in Dublin in the 70's I never missed a Red Peters Floating Blues Band Sunday session at the Meeting Place and used to live at the Baggot Inn and remember those truly great days of fun, great music, Guiness and lots of hows your Father.

When himself, Red, Declan and the others got going at the Meeting place - it was dynamite, tiny stage that it was. Witnessed moments of some of the best blues playing I can ever remember. Jimmy was as well known and respected face around the Dublin music scene and I admit I used to fancy the knickers off him and his gorgeous smile - with no success mind you.

Vale Jimmy - thank you for the soaring riffs, the great times and the great music. May your spirit rise and watch over the rest of the blues gang to make sure they keep in tune.

Sincere condolences to Pauline and family - I am sure that you miss him so much.

Sad to hear about Jimmy; had a ball of a time about 30 years ago with Jimmy playing in Paris; & I knew Jimmy since the Dandelion Market day's; He once said to me "when your a musicien; wherever you go ;you'll always be taken care off" so I guess your "sitting on a beach of gold" now

Smile down on us Jimmy; You were a good guy to know ; & always had time for a chat

Love to your family

All the best - Peadar

does anybody know if there was any sort of recording of the Jimmy Faulkner tribute show at the Dublin Olympia theatre in (I think)September 2008? not a bootleg, but audio or visual.

The gig was filmed by Se Merry Doyle, an award winning film maker according to Hot Press magazine. His company is called Loopline. I contacted him and he says he filmed it on spec and hoped to get some finance together to do something with it. That was shortly after the gig though so he mustn't have had any luck..

The Meeting Place is where I first heard the brilliant and inventive guitar playing that was Jimmy. Sundays with Red was a mind-blowing(!) experience for me as an 18 year old. Turn Around, Caledonia, Spotlight,That's alright Mama...I still remember all the words. The crowd going nuts for more, the guitar sparring with Pat Farrell, the thunder of Fran Breens drums and the faces he pulled. Part of the soundtrack of my youth. For that alone I am grateful. But Jimmy was more than that. He had a great sense of humour and sometimes he only had to say a couple of words to have the audience laughing especially when he was ordering drinks from the stage. He was one of the most versatile guitar players I've ever seen. The stuff he did with Hotfoot was note perfect against Pat Collins fiddle with Jimmy Gibson providing rhythm. I saw some of the very early Hotfoot gigs in the Meeting Place when there was only a few in attendance. With the two Jimmys and Pat it just had to work and of course it did. I was lucky enough to have been at some of the recording of Christy Moores live in Dublin album...still great. The turnout for his tribute in the Olympia says it all. He was held in such high esteem and affection by thousands. He was a legendary guitar player and he was a nice man. Rest in Peace. I hope you're in heaven and Jesus and the saints are jumpin'. The world is a lesser place without you.
