Subject: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Mr Happy Date: 06 Mar 08 - 06:12 AM I쳌fm aware there쳌fs a plethora of rock/ pop bands around who쳌fve a sort of cult following in the form of tribute bands who perform covers of famous band쳌fs big hits. As described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribute_act Do any such ensembles exist in the folk world? |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Jack Blandiver Date: 06 Mar 08 - 07:58 AM I played with The Half-Remarkable Questionnaires ten years back; an Incredible String Band tribute band, supporting Dr Strangely Strange in Leeds! Does that count as folk I wonder? And word is there's a Fourth Ear Band in the offing... |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Giant Folk Eyeball (inactive) Date: 06 Mar 08 - 08:00 AM Isn't anyone who sings traditional material a (sort of) tribute act? No, no! Only joking! Really! |
|
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Jack Blandiver Date: 06 Mar 08 - 08:17 AM I was going to say that actually, Nigel - that all folkies (traditional or otherwise) are invariably paying tribute to someone or other by way of guilt-free plagiarism masquerading as 'folk process', or some other level of cultural reportage which is just fine by me, dears. Last night at Chorton I could have been on Stars in Your Eyes; Tonight, Les - I'm going to be Peter Bellamy singing The Housecarpenter - only I can't play Anglo, so I'm going to use a Black Sea Fiddle instead... Corn Rigs was sung last night too, and very beautifully I might add, though the last time I sang this in public I was upbraided by some Wyrd Goths for singing it to the wrong tune, believing as they did that The Wicker Man soundtrack was somehow definitive, and to prove it one of them picked up a guitar and sang Giovanni's arrangement note perfect. Impressed? You bet. |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Mr Happy Date: 06 Mar 08 - 08:33 AM .......& then there's those irritating oiks who sing for example Christy Moor songs with a diablical 'oirish' accent, believing this to be a true rendering? |
|
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 06 Mar 08 - 08:57 AM Nigel's and Sedayne's point is a good one and Sedayne's rendering, dangerous word that, of the House Carpenter was certainly a living folk process. I seem to remember lots of groups that could be termed tribute Spinners, who of course had obvious connections to the Weavers. A number of Peter, Paul and Marys in the 60's and quite a few Clancy Bros. |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: GUEST,Ken Brock Date: 06 Mar 08 - 09:07 AM Currently there are Weavermania in the Chicago area and Work o' the Weavers in the Eastern USA. There's tons of tribute Kingston Trio acts, some of which post clips or articles at www.kingstontrioplace.com. |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Ernest Date: 07 Mar 08 - 02:03 AM Sounds like a funny idea to drive the folk police to despair: "Hey, your beard is 2 cm shorter than Ronnie Drew`s was when he started the Dubliners, plus you are not play the same brand of guitar he used back then and also pickups in acoustic guitars were not invented back then and....." |
|
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: GUEST,Acorn4 Date: 07 Mar 08 - 02:56 AM There is certainly a fellow on the circuit who does a Jake Thackray set - not actually a band but a tribute nonetheless! |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: GUEST,jeff Date: 07 Mar 08 - 10:39 AM One example from the USA, Chicago in particular was a show called 'Weavermania'. In the 'cast' were two of the finest American songwriters of a generation. Michael Smith and Tom Dundee(RIP). Doing Weavers' covers...? They did quite well with it for a while and I think it's still being revived from time to time. |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 07 Mar 08 - 11:00 AM We do a Matt McGinn tribute night annually, but most of us don't try to look like him (a couple of exceptions to this): we do the songs, sometimes with appropriate costumes and props.e.g. huge blow-up banans, plus some real ones for "Have a Banana". |
|
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands? From: Splott Man Date: 07 Mar 08 - 11:23 AM I do so many songs that I've been doing for years, I'm my own tribute act. |
