The Folk Club has a brand new venue, and it's not too far away from the old one. Lovely Pete has arranged for us to go to his local, The Foresters in Wilmington. It's address is 235 Dartford High Street, but that's at the pretty end!

We start there on Monday 4th May. I know it's a Bank Holiday, but please make an effort to be there. We want to create a good impression. I have spoken to the landlady, Katy, she seems very nice and keen to have us there. We'll probably coming straight from Rochester Sweeps Festival.

Robin Gray and I used to run the folk club in the early 70`s in "The Green Man" at the top of Blackheath Hill. I`ve still got the poster for the Paul Simon night. The place closed during that decade and some poncy flats are now on the site. I hope they didn`t blame us!.

Well done. I remember the Blackheath folk club in the pub by the railway station inn the early seventies, and loads of sessions at the much mussed Three Tuns. Funny about the Royal Oak, though, we went in after a Blackheath Morris practice and started singing only to be told that there was no music, as the customers didn't like it. The customers were actually joining in lustily, and complained when we had to srop. We all the spoke, loudly in Unison, the wild rover. The landlord didn't see the funnyb side and threw us out. That was 35 years or so ago, so the rules have obviously shanged. The beer was always good, though, the Courage best was delivered in 54 gallon Hogsheads.

Our trio, provisionally (but clumsily) named GOLLOP/VAN-DELLER/ILLINGWORTH will be playing two half hour (or so)sets at the Blackheath Folk Club (in bar of British Oak, 109 Old Dover Road,
Blackheath SE3 8SU) on Tuesday 24th June.

Line-up:-

Barry Gollop (acoustic lead-guitar/vocals)
Steve Van-Deller (mandolin/10-string cuatro/slide-guitar/vocals)
Dave Illingworth (rhythm-guitar/vocals)

Material comes from the 1920s onwards, American & British, sad songs and good-time blues, by well-known and lesser known writers plus the odd original and a touch of "traditional". Basically songs we like to sing and play.

Fortunately, via my dad, I've heard of Blue Cheer, and heard that particular version of the song, must say I do prefer the Eddie Cochran version. the band and I performed the song in the Eddie Cochran style one night (and yes we used electric instruments), there were those that got it, and those that didn't, but it was alot of fun nonetheless.

Our original intention was for an acoustic sing - around. This is still our aim. A small PA will be used for visiting guests if they require it and on nights when the bar is crowded - which has been the case the last three weeks - all there for the music as well!

The P.A in the British Oak is a small one and is only really necessary when the pub gets crowded and noisy towards the end of the evening. (As most do). This is not a "folk club" as such, but an open mike (or not) session in the large bar. The only problem I can see with P.A is that it will attract more non-folk musicians and singers.

We're far enough away to not cause confusion but the Blackheath Folk has celebrated its 15th birthday this year at Blackheath on the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia. We meet on the first Thursday of the month, with floor spots [a few poets perhaps] and a featured performer. If you're ever in our area please come along.

I hate the word Chav, both because of its etymology and because it seems like another stick with which to beat the working classes. Yes, there are yobs and louts in every town, but when kids at public schools are having Chav Parties, it's not really very nice. This was a good article:

If we had have been in Charlton we would have called it Charlton folk Club! As someone who was raised in Charlton(not Charlton Heights or West Charlton, what nonsense) as well as Charing Heath as a child it is my hope that the club prospers and the good works of those running it make it a successful enterprise. Regarding the title it really should be New Folk Club In Charlton. To suggest it is in
Blackheath does give a misleading impression.

Sorry to keep the thread off topic, but the lingistic issue is of some interest.

I'm certainly not of or from Chatham, but I did go to secondary school there. In the sixties and seventies, the use of "chavvy" for man/lad and "malt" (phonetically "mawt") for girl was widespread. I stopped using them when I went to university as nobody there understood them. As far as I remember, the word "chavvy" was fairly neutral. The negative connotation of the word, and the shortening to "chav", appears to have arisen, relatively recently, due to the less than desirable behaviour of certain groups of yobboes who wish to be known as chavs!

And, more importantly, well done for finding the venue, Woodsie!

Nothing wrong with working class. My father started as an apprentice in electrical signalling with GEC, and my maternal grandfather was a carpenter (no, not that carpenter, I'm not that old). Plenty wrong with what are universally referred to as "chavs" these days. I live not far from Chatham, so I do have plenty of chance to see the specie in its natural habitat.

I'm no expert on traveller culture, but where I might once have expected to hear the greeting or salutation "chavvy", derived from the Romany, I think it is now more common to hear "Bruv" to indicate a degree of consanguinity.

Also, actually, nothing wrong with being properly spoken.

The British Oak is not really Blackheath is it Mick. Will this be run as a folk club or just as a session? Sounds interesting anyway.

I would have thought that braying middle-class dickheads in rugby shirts with the collars turned up would have been more of a problem in Blackheath, to be honest.

Chav-free, eh? That means no working-class then. I used to live in Blackheath and then very gladly moved to downtown Catford. My local boozer, The Blythe Hill Tavern, has a good Irish session night every Thursday (chavs in one bar, Irish playing chavs in the other).

What's that got to do with it? You are obviously out of touch with modern slang "Chav" although originating in romany is nowadays a term that generally describes the lager swilling herberts that walk around in hoodies and baseball caps causing trouble and mayhem. This pub is one of the few in the area that does not attract them.

At last we have found a good pub to establish a folk club! Real ale, friendly regulars, chav-free, spacious performing area and music loving landlord! Blackheath Folk Club please come along and support this venture. The first night will be Tuesday 8th April 2008 and hopefully every Tuesday after that!
