Anybody within range of RTE Radio one (Ireland) might be interested in the hour-long programme at 9pm tonight on collecting folk music.

I caught this programme last night

I personally found it interesting although perhaps intense

The Housecarpenter was featured and its origins and was a song i learnt many years ago ~ I was struck by the variations of tunes used and guitar styles etc

Curt Cobain also was included there[I think] and the guitar "rifts" which were clearly copied, but then dunt we all!

Eliza Carthy singing Ten Thousand miles from Nick Jones too
**
Aside:
CBS recording of the same song bears a uncanny resemblance to NJ too

Do you mean "riffs"? Though I am sure that in the case of many bands then "rifts" is a better term

Riffs ~ as I am a singer and not a "musician" you will no doubt be correct, sorry!

Point re bands may also be true, but then I dunt get involved wi em

The gospel according to RTE Guide sez:

The Radio 1 Music Collection: Crossing The Bridge
Pat Horgan presents a documentary about song collectore from A.L. Lloyd to Harry Smith, and song collections from Folkways to Broadside Ballads

The gospel according to Bonnie sez:

WOWWWWWWWWW I remembered all over again just how brilliant Nic Jones' music is.

This show is definitely worth a listen if you can manage it -

Jim, click on Diane's link and then click on the "Arts & Traditional Music" heading in the sidebar to the right. Or (if it works) you can just try clicking this:

Thanks for the link Bonnie. I had searched around without luck but did manage to find the Tom Munnelly programme I'd previously missed so caught up on that at least.

Not the easiest radio site I've found but hidden gems.
