The Pacific Northwest Library Association is meeting in Post Falls, Idaho (near Spokane, WA) in August.

This organization will 100 years old next year and includes the states and provinces of Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, British Columbia, and Alberta. It is the only international regional library association in North America and was given its start by Andy Carnegie himself.

One of the things this group does is support intellectual freedom efforts with a silent auction. If you have anything you'd like to donate to this auction -- a CD, perhaps -- please PM me and I'll tell you how to do so. There's no tax advantage here, it's just A Nice Thing To Do.

What other kinds of things are offered up for the auction?

I'll be happy to send something, Rapaire. What about custom designed semi-precious gemstone jewellery? Or, a brand-new book?

Let's see: books, especially ones that might otherwise escape notice (like one about working in the Arctic or by a good local poet); local wines and even local liquor; jewelry; nice stationery or journals; soaps and things like that; shawls, afghans, and other knitted or crocheted items; tee shirts; Henley shirts (I have one from the "Iceworms Winter Reading Program" at the Unalaska Public Library); cookbooks; CDs of local or regional musicians; DVDs of local interest; packages of smoked fish, chocolates, and other delights -- heck, they're all librarians and their tastes run the gamut.

This is a silent auction; things are displayed on tables in a secure hallway or room and people write their bids down. The items are described and unless the donor asks otherwise their name is noted. Last year the auction raised (if I remember rightly) about CDN $1500, at the time around USD 1,200.

In Montgomery County MD the basement of the Wheaton Library is a used book store for the last 10 years (friends of the library) is full of the county's discards of every sort and donations.

They are staffed by volunteers and 2 paid employees. The Library gets a cut, the buyers get a cut and the paid managers Richard & Beth do nicely. What comes in as donations due to the nature of the DC areais remarkable. Classified stuff, fine old oil painting prortraits of great American authors, music and the absurdly impossible to find if you tried.

Some people come in and buy 2000 lbs of law books just for decorating a wall and dealers come in to buy the very old.

This book store has been such a success there is much to learn in emulating their liberal policies and incredibly low prices.

If you want Richard's contact info I can get it for you.

I've probably met mudcatters there without knowing it.

I'll stick a note in explaining what it's for. I hope people at your library understand about your Mudcat alter ego and why donations are coming in from odd corners of the country. ;)

Hey, these folks are librarians. From public, academic (that's colleges and places like that, Bobert), special (law, medicine, etc.) and school (Bobert, that's like the one in the last school you went to) and being such they are all nuts. Just plain nuts!

One of my predecessors here played the...the...clarinet! He even had his picture in the local paper clarineting! In public! And of course there's me....

I just returned your PM. Of course I'll be glad and honored to contribute a couple of CD's to such a fine cause.. and this comes from a guy that had an FBI file started on me when I was i6 (they caught me singing sings they thought were communist songs). By the way, can I also send over my 26 year old neighbor for the auction?Se's a real beauty: she advertises herself on craigslist as availale by the hour, and her boyfirend is presently in jail on nine charges ranging from possesion of burglery tools to distrubtion of drugs. I mean, she's really cute and I'll even pay for her bus ticket ... HUH ... PRETTY PLEASE ... WILL YOU AUCTION HER OFF FOR ME? Bob

Reminds me of a Guy Noir skit on PHC, today, in which one disguise for sale at a super-duper I Spy shop was a kit that made you into a bluegrass musician!:-)

I missed that, I'll have to listen to it tomorrow when they repeat it.

I donated some librarian action figures to a silent auction here one time. Librarians are pretty savvy--they didn't go over list price on it. ;)

Who's "John?" Or is it the noun, john, not the proper name you have on your mind, Bob? This is Mike the librarian who did the asking.

OOOps ... you're quite right ... it's "MIKE" not John. I guess my neighbor has had too much of an influence on me. (jeeze ... looks like I can't even GIVE her away). Bob

She's probably advertising because she WAS giving it away. Forget the old advice

"...If I can't sell it gonna keep sittin' on it,
Never catch me givin' it away...."

By the way, if you'd like to know more about the oldest regional library association in US and/or Canada, visit it by clicking on the clicky.

Well, Bobert, what happened was that you was lightin' up and usin' matches and right there on the matchbook was this ad. Kinda like how my very own very Roman Catholic brother got hisself to be an ordained minister in a real, honest-to-God, actually existing, church. I've seen them matchbooks, advertisin' degress from places like the University of West Virginia. "Get The Degree You Need NOW! None of that studying or stuff! Just send a good check!"

Heck, send a copy of the CD.
