I won't go in to too much detail, but from the reputable sources I've read, about %20-%30 of what's in the bible can be verified as having been part of his teachings, with the rest being tacked on over the years in various religions to put more of an angle on 'enforcement'. Being devoutly non-Christian, I still say that from what I believe are his actual teachings, that he was a wonderful person and I wish I could have met and spoken to him. Other than that, put me down on the side of 'Organized religion (Christian and otherwise) has done more to exalt humanity than any other force in existence, as well as having done more to destroy it' (Can't remember who said it, but I'm pretty sure that's the quote) M |

One of his (many) books is a detailed dissection of the Old Testament, with historical backing and research on all events therein. I just get that way when the bible-thumping evangelical energy in the room gets too high. I get very wary when I'm around massive gatherings of "the converted." The rallies at Nuremburg in 1939 were considered to be joyful events by those present, but the repercussions were not. I am certainly not Christo-phobic. I even love Christmas, and most Christian songs. (I used to sing a capella sacred music of the Renaissance with the Renaissance Street Singers.) I even admire its teachings. I just ain't inclined that way myself. Many of my closest, dearest friends are devout Christians, and on rare occasions I have even joined them in prayer (God knows I need it)... but only when they fill the room with love (as opposed to Messianic fervor). |
