I see from the link to a previous thread (posted above by Masato Sakurai) that somebody wrote that the song was written by Delia Murphy. Can this be true? Delia Murphy was a well-known Irish ballad singer. There's a Dan O'Hara cottage in Connemara, but it's not a Connemara song: nor by a known local author or containing any local style or references. The words read more like Tin Pan Alley to me.
Jesse Owens also recorded it.

This song was popular on the Walton Programme on Radio Eireann in the 1950s, I cannot remember the name of the singer.

According to a tourist page on galway.net: "Nestling into the hillside beneath the Twelve Bens is the restored cottage of Dan O'Hara, a man made famous in song and story."
I have my reservations (ha!) about this. It would help if anybody could tell us who wrote "Dan O'Hara". Come on, Mudcatters, your reputation is at stake!

The singer of Dan O`Hara in the Walton programmes was Delia Murphy, so far I have searched through all of my song books but nothing on the origin of the song.

yes - it's usually ascribed, "words and music", to Delia Murphy, in the Walton's publications in which it first appeared around 1950. Aidan O'Hara, in his biography of Delia, remarks that "in most cases it was quite obvious that she got her inspiration from the folk song and ballad tradition" - but says nothing specific about this song.

From the singing of the great Delia Murphy. My good friend Dr. Jim Flanagan, anthropologist, musician and singer from Ballyvourney, County Cork, kindly passed on the following about Dan O'Hara: Having visited the Heritage Center in Clifden, County Galway, Jim found that Dan O'Hara was indeed a real person who lived in the years leading up to the famine of 1846/47 with his wife and eight children. He had a homestead between Clifden and Recess in Connemara but when he increased the size of the windows in his cottage, this "improvement" led the landlord to increase his rent. When he could not pay he was evicted. He emigrated to New York but during the passage over his wife and three of his children died. He arrived in New York a sad and broken man and made a meager dying by selling matches on the street corners of the city.

Glad you like Brendan Nolan, Ard Mhacha. He has been an influence on my music since I first heard him some 20 years ago. Have you ever heard his "Far From Their Homes"? It is quite simply the finest tellin' of the coffin ships, and the peoples that tried to help our grandparents in the crossing, that I have ever heard. I love Nolan's work and highly recommend it to all.

Delia Murphy regsitered the music and lyrics for "Dan O'Hara" in the USA in 1950. More details here. I still have my reservations about all this.
