Subject: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,Peter Carr at The Picturedrome Date: 14 Apr 08 - 09:38 AM After the summer has been and gone.I am hoping that there might be volunteers/helpers call em' what you want to start a fresh folk scene... in the upper bar area of The Picturedrome.....This ideally will take place on alternate Thursdays, so that it wont clash with the Jazz gang which is also on alternate Thursdays. There will be no cash outlay required and more importantly there will be real ale on sale...at a sensible rate..........Friday nights will become an accross the board night for live music upstairs.....Films will then operate probably on a ''when a print is available basis''.........There is a small stage and p.a. in-house.......and a baby grand piano that arrives this week....Anyone interested please let me know ....Cheers.PC |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: Cath Date: 14 Apr 08 - 10:30 AM But what about the Open Mic - that is the alternate Thursday to the Jazz night? |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC Date: 14 Apr 08 - 11:48 AM What open mic'...[or are you refering to the Number 11 bar ?].. |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,glueman Date: 14 Apr 08 - 12:07 PM So long as it had a liberal interpretation of folk, broadminded people, decent beer and didn't involve me volunteering to do anything apart from clapping, I'd attend. |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: andyval Date: 14 Apr 08 - 12:32 PM Hi Peter, Sounds promising but there are already folk music sessions on the second and third Thursday in the Holme Valley and another one now being advertised for the last Thursday. What is it about Thursdays ? |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: dozy rozy Date: 14 Apr 08 - 12:50 PM sounds good to me.I'd be interested.Keep us posted. |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,glueman Date: 14 Apr 08 - 01:16 PM Doesn't the Farmer's Arms have a monthly Thursday session? |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: Cath Date: 14 Apr 08 - 01:23 PM Yes I was referring to the Open Mic at Number 11 which has a very eclectic mix of music but which occupies a lot of the local, and not quite so local, musicians. It seems a shame to split the performers and the audience as there is bound to be some overlap. |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: MoorleyMan Date: 14 Apr 08 - 01:57 PM Shame if it would have to be a Thursday, as that's already a far-too-busy night across the county... |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC at Picturedrome Date: 14 Apr 08 - 06:11 PM I'm aware that alternating Thursdays is a bad night in particular for Holmfirth..[[[[[[[[[I suggested it as its suits our place from a real ale perspective..as I am confident in stating that I cannot have good fresh real ale on sale on a Sunday, Monday & Tuesday as there is not the people about to drink it..I would be able then to sell the stuff over the weekend]]]]]]]]], especially when Number 11 are doing there bit.Im' open to offers ideas..etc..Monday is a bad night, as is Tuesday, Friday and Saturday is dominated more often than not with 'main gigs', leaving Sunday and Wednesdays...........Perhaps you poeple can help me...would I be better putting performances on that poeple pay to come and listen too for an admittance of say a £1.00 or so..[bearing in mind, artists will have some form of expenses to cover etc....someone tell me what to do....I'm open to ideas'....PC |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC Date: 14 Apr 08 - 06:18 PM Hello Dozy Rozey....Was I drunk last festival or did I give you money for the bucket.? |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: r.padgett Date: 15 Apr 08 - 04:36 AM So long as it was money in the bucket I don't see a problem! Real ale and folk venues are ok so long as you dont have to travel to and from Folk has only a certain number of interested parties capable of supporting venues! Ray |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC at Picturedrome Date: 15 Apr 08 - 09:06 AM In the bucket to pay for artists.sadly any shortfall would have to put up and paid by me.......We have a slight problem here at Picturedrome.everyone and their dog wants to play here and I'm having to allways say no and I dont like doing so.....tell me what to do.PC |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,glueman Date: 15 Apr 08 - 09:08 AM OT but anyway, Dr John was in cracking form at the Picturedrome last year. An absolute treat. |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC at Picturedrome Date: 15 Apr 08 - 09:44 AM Excuse me but what is.OT..? |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: glueman Date: 15 Apr 08 - 09:46 AM Off topic. Dr John being mentioned on a folk site might set some people's pulses racing for some reason. Just thought it was a belting gig. |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: r.padgett Date: 15 Apr 08 - 10:21 AM It rather seems that you have a dilemma The Picture drome may well be great for "big" acts attracting good crowds However I can only suspect that the ones you are turning down are good but do not attract "big" audiences and which may be best suited to a more informal Folk Club room and setting There are indeed many folk acts looking for gigs on a more commercial basis ~ if that is the sort of thing you are looking for then you need a nucleus of knowledgeable folk persons to actually "run" the night or even an "anchor" person who is local Ray |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC at Picturedrome Date: 15 Apr 08 - 11:17 AM The area where [possibly]'the new folk' scene would take place is in the upper bar area..which is tiny in comparrisson to the main stage and floor area....The current jazz thing currently attracts somewhere in the region of 25 to 50 poeple per session and its great and its certainly not 'a money spinner' so to speak...I agree completely about someone running & anchoring the night..the admin side of things are not an issue but I would need someone or a group to show a willingness before 'we' proceed..................This has come about because I want to re-introduce real ale to the upper bar only.......I'm allready more than gratefull for the current' threads' input........ |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: dozy rozy Date: 15 Apr 08 - 12:57 PM Hello, Mr.Carr.No you did not put any money in my bucket. You did however leave a risque comment on the festival thread last year.I shall look forward to a contribution of some kind from you this year. And don't think I'll let you get away with it, this time.I shall follow you like a blood hound all around the village. And as for the folk nights, just get on with it and may the best session win! |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC at Picturedrome... Date: 15 Apr 08 - 06:17 PM Its not as simple as that... |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 16 Apr 08 - 02:01 AM Just come back to mudcat after a year or so away - nice to see people are still trying to get new things going in the area. Why dont you list the things going on in Holmfirth and surrounds that people know about now - then you could see clearly if there was a night which was looking 'bleak' on the music front. Personally would love to be involved and Thursday is okay by me but wont be drinking much as drinking and work the next day dont mix. Shame - real ale mmm! |
Subject: RE: A new Folk Club for Holmfirth From: GUEST,PC at Picturedrome... Date: 16 Apr 08 - 08:50 AM Sadly the way things are at the moment in the pub world...Sundays to Wednesdays are not good days to try get poeple out of their houses..........Thursdays are like something to look forward to with the weekend ahead etc..........We hold concerts on any night, and a concert on a Sunday through to Wednesday are nothing like a concert on a Thursday Friday or Saturday for obvious reasons.... |
