Hi - Have just tried to post a response to a thread and got a message saying 'Access denied' ... anyone know why this might be?

From: Blowzabella
Date: 28 Apr 08 - 02:53 PM

Hi again - seems I can post a new topic but can't post a second message to that topic (which was going to say 'It seems I can post a new topic'). As I can't respond to the thread I started I had to start a new thread to say that I can't respond .....

The thread I was trying to respond to in the first place was the 'Tight Folkies' thread. Can't remember what I was going to say now though ...

I have got the 'Access Denied' a few times in the past - Looked to me as though it was an I S P issue !

It happened a few times to me (not for a long while though) when using AOL. Two things seemed to get round it:

1) Use IE directly (which I usually do) rather than AOL's browser

2) Delete the &message=n bit of the address (ie just keep the part up to the threadid=n). This seemed to let me open threads that I couldn't otherwise open.

!!!! Having said that it hasn't happened for a while it just did while I tried to post this (in AOL browser - I've just had to redo the AOL updates since installation, so it may be related to that).

Anyway I'm now posting from IE directly without problems!

Mick

No, this happens when the Mudcat censors go to work.

They are very busy right now with their political censorship below the line.

When at least one of the Mudcat moderators starts trying to censor threads, they seem to trip the trigger of their ISP blockers.

The access denied msg will start to come up for awhile in all the main browsers, including AOL, IE, Firefox, and Safari.

I noticed it as soon as one of mods closed the "Odd Etymologies" thread.

I could be wrong but I've a feeling AOL by default uses the AOL proxy service. I don't know what would happen if on of those IP addresses was blocked by Mudcat.

AOL's info is here

There are two other threads about this problem. I don't know what's causing it, but maybe it's related to tomorrow's move? Just wild guesses.

I share your opinion it has to do with the proxy servers, Jon.

Are you on AOL, OG? I get 'Access Denied' on the Bude Festival thread using the AOL browser, but it's OK using IE or Firefox.

Others have apparently had problems with AOL too.

For what it's worth, I hate AOL. It takes over your PC.

Good guess Mr Crane driver (Crane Duet perhaps ?)

I am on AOL as it happens. I do get some wierd problems with them from time to time but get such a good phone deal with them that the Missus don't want to change ISP

what I wanted to post re Brian Peters was :-

< Looking forward to hearing the new CD Brian.

That should keep the singers busy for a bit .... so while they're otherwise distracted, how about a 'sneaking in' a purely concertina CD next to keep us Anglo Squeezers happy ? >

regards

Dave

pah

I have never had an 'Access Denied' on the Mudcat. Most likely there was an air bubble in the tube- try it again.

It has nothing to do with Max moving. The Mudcat censors have been playing with the proxies again.

Same happened to me, Glueman - though I wasn't even important enough to rate a Denied Access [sniff]. I tried twice to post to the same thread, clicked on Submit, it flushed away as per normal, and then... nothing. Opened a different browser, tried again, and third time lucky. Unusual occurrence, probably related to the Break.

I just tried to post to the Brian Peters thread and had the same problem. I think that there may be a problem with that particular thread as I'm not on AOL.
Four threads combined.

I still think maybe the problem is related to the move. If you're on AOL and use Internet Explorer, it would still go through AOL's servers. Not a server blockage, methinks. Not unless whatever anti-spam stuff Max has going on is blocking stuff when it's posted

The AOL browser does seem to be a possible culprit. I've used Internet Explorer on AOL and generally had far fewer problems.

If you're on AOL and use Internet Explorer, it would still go through AOL's servers

I haven't found AOL's info but amongst the (admittedly dated) advice Wikipedia gave to users finding themselves blocked by the MediaWiki software (and a block on AOL proxies) I find:

"Use a different web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera. These browsers are not configured to use the AOL proxies by default.

OK IE isn't mentioned but I'd guess it would be like Firefox, etc.
