Subject: RE: Lyr Req: patrick pearse From: GUEST,caitlín Date: 01 May 08 - 05:47 AM Are these the words you want? (As sung by the Wolfe Tones) In Dublin town in nineteen sixteen a flame of freedom did arise. A group of men with determination caught an empire by surprise Through the streets our men were marching They rallied with their hopes and fears And the Enda boys came searching for their leader Padraig Pearse. Chorus: The poet and the Irish rebel a Gaelic scholar and a visionary We gave to him no fitting tribute When Ireland's at peace only that can be When Ireland a nation, united and free. On Easter morn he faced the nation from the steps of the G.P.O. And read aloud the proclamation, the seed of nationhood to sow. But soon the word had spread to London of an insurrection there at hand And the deeds of Padraic Pearse was set about to free his land. Chorus ... For five long days the battle rages, for five long nights the battle wore We will watch as Dublin City blazes and see our men fall through the floor No Ireland's proud of her effort for her cause we fought with pride But to save more life and to save our city, we make our peace with McFainis cried. Chorus ... Kilmainham Jail in 1916, they brought young Pearse to his death cell and they tried him as a traitor to shoot this man who dared to rebel He only tried to free his country of the shackles of 800 years. When dawn did break on that May morning they shot our Leader Padraic Pearse. Chorus |

Subject: Lyr Add: PATRICK PEARSE (Ian Campbell) From: Sugwash Date: 01 May 08 - 11:24 AM Here you go, as best as I can make out: PATRICK PEARSE Ian Campbell Well me name it doesn't matter. You've never heard of me. When my brothers turned me loose, I ran away to sea. I can't say I've achieved much, but this I'm glad to say: My father knew the man who played the pipes for Patrick Pearse On the fateful night before they took his life away, On the night before they took his life away. Well, I haven't made much money. I've never learned a trade. I didn't get much of a dowry when I married the Sheehan's maid, But I had my finger in history. I'm very proud to say: My father knew the man who played the pipes for Patrick Pearse On the fateful night before they took his life away On the night before they took his life away Now Pearse was allowed one last request, traditional in the Var. (I can't quite make the last word out, it sounds like the Var though) He asked to hear the Croppy Boy played on the pipes once more. Me father drove the cart that dropped old Fancy at the door. My father shook the hand that played the pipes for Patrick Pearse On the fateful night before they took his life away, On the night before they took his life away. Now there's fellas I went to school with driving round in private cars. They own the house they live in and they're richer than me by far. Though they won't admit it, they envy me the day. My father shook the hand that played the pipes for Patrick Pearse On the fateful night before they took his life away, On the night before they took his life away-- On the fateful night before they took his life away, On the night before they took his life away. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: patrick pearse From: peregrina Date: 01 May 08 - 12:48 PM a couple of tiny corrections: This I'm proud to say One last request Traditional in the law {lots to find via google about the significance of the Croppy Boy and last piping} Me father drove the car That dropped old Francie at the door and on Tommy on the Bridge Tom McConville sings: On the night before that fatefully they took his life away |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: patrick pearse From: Sugwash Date: 01 May 08 - 05:08 PM Thanks guys, I guess my hearing's shot. This is the sort of thread I like on Mudcat, not endless bickering over whatever, just helpful sharing of information. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: patrick pearse From: peregrina Date: 01 May 08 - 06:05 PM good thread; great song & CD. Funny how one can mishear things...not sure how much these mondegreens are mishearing or rather misinterpreting on a first hearing and then matching what one does hear to the idea? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: patrick pearse From: GUEST,Alan Ackerman Date: 04 May 08 - 01:50 AM OK, I'll bite. I've been hearing this song a lot on BBC radio (via the Internet). Clearly it is tongue in cheek. But it did make me go look up on the web who the heck Patrick Pearse was. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Pearse.) Patrick Pearse was court-marshalled and shot as a traitor by the British army. There was an international outcry over the fact time that he and the others died without a trial. So would he have been "allowed one last request traditional in the law"? Probably not. Does anyone know? Did someone play him "The Croppy Boy"? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: patrick pearse From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 04 May 08 - 04:04 AM Please can we not go there? You can start another thread in the BS section and ask your question there if you want to, because really it's not about music. The political implications of the 1916 Rebellion are very, very well-mined seams. Alan, if you didn't even know who Pearse was until now, you really do need to do some reading - including other Mudcat threads (and not just Wikipedia). Actual books would be a good place to start: the issue is a whole lot more complex than the words of any one song, or encyclopedia article, can convey. Then go raise the issue in the other section. Sugwash wrote, "This is the sort of thread I like on Mudcat, not endless bickering over whatever, just helpful sharing of information." Me too. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Patrick Pearse (Ian Campbell) From: GUEST,Amber Date: 30 May 15 - 05:03 AM Heard this great song sang magnificently last night by David, son of Ian, last night at The Black Diamond Folk Club Birmingham. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Patrick Pearse (Ian Campbell) From: Thompson Date: 30 May 15 - 05:54 AM There were certainly no 'last requests'. Pearse was one of the first three to be shot, with Thomas MacDonagh and Thomas Clarke, after a fit-up court martial of doubtful legality, to put it kindly. I should imagine that "my brothers turned me loose" should be "the Brothers turned me loose", suggesting that the boy was in a reformatory or orphanage; also "Sheehan's maid" should be "Sheehans' maid". If you want a real story about Pearse, here's one. His closest friend was his brother Willie, a young sculptor and artist, who was shot purely because of being PH Pearse's brother. Willie was being brought to see his brother one last time at around 3.45am on 3 May 1916; as they crossed the road there was a roar of shots. The soldiers accompanying him stopped. "Too late," one said, and they turned back. The shots were the volley that killed his brother. Willie was shot that night. |
