Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: katlaughing Date: 03 May 08 - 02:21 PM He's great for that kind of stuff. Here's a little bit of his background. I doubt he'd of lasted if he was too "sweet, little and old:":-) From Wiki: During the Kennedy Administration, Moyers was first appointed as associate director of public affairs for the newly created Peace Corps in 1961. He served as Deputy Director from 1962-63. When Johnson took office after the Kennedy assassination, Moyers became a special assistant to Johnson, serving from 1963–1967. He played a key role in organizing and supervising the 1964 Great Society legislative task forces and was a principal architect of Johnson's 1964 presidential campaign. When Walter Jenkins resigned from Johnson's staff in October 1964, Moyers became the President's informal chief of staff until 1966. From July 1965 to February 1967, he also served as White House Press Secretary.[3] In the New York Times on April 3, 1966, Moyers offered this insight on his stint as press secretary to President Johnson: "I work for him despite his faults and he lets me work for him despite my deficiencies."[4][5] The details of his rift with Johnson have not been made public, but may be discussed in a forthcoming memoir.[6] |

Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: Don Firth Date: 03 May 08 - 03:56 PM I know that the (shall I say?) less "liberal-oriented" of those who frequent the BS section of Mudcat will choke when they read this, but I've always found Bill Moyers one of the more reliable sources when it comes to explaining what's really going on. He often presents the stories that the Powers That Be would rather you not know about and ask the questions they would rather not be asked. And he does so from a background of knowledge and experience. Which is why some folks don't like him and call him "biased." biased def. what you call someone when they speak the truth and the truth is liable to bite you in the ass. Go get 'em, Bill! Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 May 08 - 08:34 PM He did a pretty darned good look at the current flap over Rev. Wright, who was on his program a week ago, then did a big flameout a couple of days later. Look up Moyer's Friday (May 2) program, the first segment. He nailed the racist approach to this kind of speech. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: GUEST,Fantasma Date: 04 May 08 - 01:28 PM Actually, I'm also a huge Bill Moyers fan, and I don't think he could possibly have gotten it more wrong than he did with Wright. I love the guy, but he gets it wrong sometimes too. And I think the sweet little ole guy can't admit he was used by Wright and Wright's people in a much bigger game than he admitted to on Friday night (I saw the program too--watched to see how Moyers would spin it). Don't forget, he is still a journalist, and journalists HATE admitting when they get it wrong. And in the Wright case, he just plain got it wrong. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: John Hardly Date: 04 May 08 - 02:26 PM He did a pretty darned good look at the current flap over Rev. Wright, who was on his program a week ago, then did a big flameout a couple of days later. Look up Moyer's Friday (May 2) program, the first segment. He nailed the racist approach to this kind of speech. If he had done even a reasonable job of journalism (rather than your described, "darned good look") Wright would have "flamed out" on Moyer's show -- not "a couple of days later" . Instead, "advocacy journalist" (read: the left's own Rush Limbaugh) that he is -- he tried to give Wright a pass -- even paint him as harmless, gentle old soul. And I loved the fawning over theology when clearly, though they share a denomination, Moyers doubtless disagrees with Wright's perception of an actual God who might judge mankind. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 04 May 08 - 02:57 PM As to Rev. Wright, I'm in the Mike Huckabee school of thought, because of his generation and his service to the country I was inclined to cut him some slack. But on Sunday and Monday last week he used up all of his slack. |

Subject: RE: BS: Moyers does Mission accomplished From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 May 08 - 03:20 PM I think it would be safe to say, John, that Moyers may or may not like what Wright says, but he will defend to the death his right to say it. Calmly discussing his philosophy is one thing, an angry response to continued goading is another. I think you got both of those within the space of about a week, but the latter doesn't neutralize the former. I love the guy, but he gets it wrong sometimes too. And I think the sweet little ole guy can't admit he was used by Wright and Wright's people in a much bigger game than he admitted to on Friday night (I saw the program too--watched to see how Moyers would spin it). Given the relative credibility of the two of you, I'll take Moyers. Go back and listen to the May 2 remarks, and see if you think Moyers was "used." SRS |
