How many have been notified by Microsoft that as of June 30 2008 Outlook Express will no longer be available for you to get your email?They also give you a web page that you can download a free program to replace it. Has anyone had any trouble downloading this program or is it just me

Not heard any of that ..... poo! I wonder how many of my stored messages will disappear this time!

I notice today that 'my web search' has taken over from Google as my default search engine, despite me not asking it to. I hate it when things change.

Sounds improbable to me.

Look closely at the headers of said email and discern whence it actually came.

My friend got the same message..she was running her Hotmail acct through Outlook and was told that it wasn't going to be an option much longer.

I use Outlook as my regular email and did not get a notice.

We did.

The good news is that Norton's update includes automatic sign-ins for multiple pages (such as mutiple email accounts) at one site (such as Hotmail). Translation, I am still running three Hotmail accounts as easily as ever, but now online instead of in OE; anything I want to archive to hard disk I now simply forward to the hard-wirred private home email address for storage. THe one I use most is still running thru OE so I can see what happens; the others I have auto-answering with a "vacation reply" for now to see what happens in the flip-flop.

Nothing "free" lasts forever in this world, but rest assured other providers and vendors will keep us all running, one way or another.

Use Thunderbird, available from Mozilla. It can transfer all of your Outlook addresses and mail, too.

MSN generally, and hotmail most specifically, have always objected to users of the MSN ISP SERVICE using Outlook or Outlook Express, because "real email programs" block much of the adware they can "push" via web-mail (email in a web browser). They make money off of the advertising.

Hotmail users began getting notices a couple of months ago that Outlook and Outlook Express will no longer be usable "very soon." They have a new program that they insist that you use instead.

The message about OE is sent ONLY to people using OE to receive their email from hotmail. I would expect that a similar message may be going to people using Outlook, but can't confirm that.

If you have an MSN email account, which usually means that MSN is your ISP, you may continue to be able to use Outlook or OE.

In the past, a premium (PAID FOR) hotmail account has been required to use either program for hotmail email, although the policy has been erratically, capriciously, intermittently, randomly, unpredictably, variably, and maliciously invoked for individual users.

If you're a hotmail (or MSN) email user, you should be accustomed to regular and frequent changes in "services" (a euphemism for what they do) and demands that you install "new software." The only description they give you is that the new stuff is "wonderful," and they refuse to tell you where they intend to stick the embedded stick that helps them and screws you.

They appear to be serious about this latest change, and if you want to continue using a hotmail account you have the option of installing their new "replacement for OE/Outlook" or getting your email in your browser.

After using MSN for about 21 years, and a separate hotmail account for about 12 years, my recommendation would be that you get another provider and a new email account that works. We did that several months ago, and it's been much nicer since then.

Note also that Vista does not include OE and they recommend very strongly that you do not install it on a Vista machine. (Quite a few people have done it anyway.) The "real Microsoft" (as opposed to MSN which is a separate and "nominally independent" corporation) does intend to KILL OE for all users - eventually.

I use Outlook Express as my client news reader for Newsgroups only. I do not use it at all for e-mail.

I wonder if it will still be available to access Newsgroups?

Almost any program that is installed on your computer as a 'standalone' ought to work just as it used to...until advances in basic technology makes it weak. (I still use Eudora for email, and it works fine)

Outlook Express may be integrated in such a way that MS can control what works with it, or whether OTHER 'services' such as Hotmail will work with it. (I have not used OE for 10 years, and quit using Hotmail about 9 years ago!)). It 'should' work with newsgroups, as that's not their basic concern.

I would, however, consider getting out of the MSN/Microsoft/Hotmail/OE/Outlook cycle of problems and switch to mail and newsgroup programs that are free & not subject to these hassles.

Pegasus Mail is as powerful and full of features as any program around...though it takes a bit of setup and a learning curve.

Foxmail has been around for years, and is easier to use, though not as fancy as Pegasus.

...and, as mentioned, Thunderbird is also quite nice.

...and,if you wan't to explore, here is a list of most of the email clients available

For newsgroups, MesNews or 40tude Dialog.....(but better yet PAY for Agent!)

I haven't looked too seriously at Outlook, but Outlook Express only works with POP3 or SMTP server protocols. Hotmail (for free accounts) intends to offer only html mail. If the server doesn't allow an SMTP or POP3 hookup, you can't use OE.

At least that's what we've been told by a couple of ISPs.

well, some folks have more complex needs...like maintaining accounts for several 'personas', or from different locations because they travel a lot. Some need an email address to register at various web sites, and don't want to give the same one that trusted friends use, so they want a WEBmail addy...(sometimes even a temporary one). Then they want all email FROM those other accounts to be forwarded TO their main address, so they can read it in one spot.
   I guess M$ doesn't like those folks. Programs like Eudora and Pegasus can handle such stuff.
