Subject: VIRUS WARNING From: Mick Woods Date: 14 May 08 - 04:55 AM Here is something that I have received at work this morning: WARNING There is an email that you may find in your in box with a PowerPoint presentation called "Life is beautiful" If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, delete it immediately. If you do open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: "It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful" and you will LOSE EVERYTHING ON YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and passwords and any other sensitive data. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL and microsoft have already confirmed the severity, antivirus software is not capable of destroying it.This virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner' |

Subject: RE: VIRUS WARNING From: GUEST,allan Date: 14 May 08 - 05:30 AM Yes whenever you get one of these it's always worth checking with the site quoted (in this case AOL)because if it is true it will be in big type on their front page. 99.9% of these are hoaxes and designed to panic people to e mail all thier contacts and therefore clog up the e mail servers by what is in truth spam. |

Subject: RE: VIRUS WARNING From: Rasener Date: 14 May 08 - 05:54 AM Exactly Allan, plus the time wasted by each individual who receives the e-mail. It's the same old rule. If you don't know who the sender is and if there is an attachement that you are unsure of, just delete it and get on with life. |

Subject: RE: VIRUS WARNING From: AlexB Date: 14 May 08 - 01:38 PM Actually I think it is more to harvest email addresses. Most people just hit forward and don't remove the addresses of the previous batch of people.Eventually it'll reach some opportunist who then gains a whole bunch of email addresses to spam. |

Subject: RE: VIRUS WARNING From: Peace Date: 14 May 08 - 01:46 PM Mick, I thank you. I'd rather be warned about a hoax than not told about a real virus. |

Subject: RE: "Life is Beautiful" VIRUS WARNING (Hoax) From: Amos Date: 15 May 08 - 09:34 AM Check with Snopes on these -- or one of several debunker sites -- before you hot the alrm switch, guys. They give you the straight dope on most hoaxes. Be suspicious of any virus warning that predicts catastrophic general consequences in this sort of language. There is no virus out there which will destroy your pick up truck, give your dog a strange African disease, and convince your wofe to join a convent. A |
