By rights, the U.S. Senate should be a businessmen's club, a bunch of rich old guys who care about little more than their stock portfolios. Luckily, there have been some remarkable people in the Senate in the last half-century, senators who really seem to care about the rights and needs of the people. Most of them are gone now, and Ted Kennedy is a part of that disappearing generation. I guess he'll be gone soon, too. He wasn't perfect, but he tried to serve the people.

God bless him.

As a man, I've had little use for Teddy since he opposed Carter and helped to hand the White House to "The Actor" in 1980. However, I agree 100% with his politics.

By the way, all those comments about his privilege and pampering...his money and position were bought and paid for by old Joe Kennedy before Teddy was born. I hope no one knocks me because of what my father did or didn't do.
Naturally he is being well cared for...so what? If he had his way, every American would enjoy the same health care he and all those other career politicians have.

Best Buddies

"Best Buddies ® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.

"Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,300 middle school, high school, and college campuses across the country and internationally. Best Buddies programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States. We have accredited international programs on six continents with additional country programs under active development. Our six formal programs – Best Buddies Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e -Buddies® and Jobs – will positively impact more than 350,000 individuals this year. Best Buddies also is systematically implementing our 2010 initiative that will witness the organization's continued significant growth, both domestically and overseas. Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute services to the community that equate to more than $70 million USD.

"Even though Best Buddies has advanced tremendously in our short existence, many areas of the country and many regions of the world still lack programs to help people with intellectual disabilities become part of mainstream society. Our goal is to continue expanding nationwide and at the local community level, while more broadly engaging the global community through our programs."

Thank you, both. Here's a little more about how one may support him:

The day that Senator Kennedy was rushed to the hospital he was supposed to hold a fundraiser for the charity, Best Buddies. Best Buddies' mission is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Another great way to show your support for Senator Kennedy would be to make a donation to this organization.

There will never again be a liberal like Ted who was the REAL THING and did countless good for the state of Massachussets and the country. Made one proud to be a Democrat. The prognosis, at least as reported by the media, does not sound good at all. We know Ted is a fighter, so if anyone can beat this, or at least stay it off for a while, it's him. Our prayers and thoughts are with him. So sad how so many of the Kennedy's have tragically died; at least some of their dreams have not.

btw many people take issue with the accident Ted had at Chap. and I am not going to take sides either way at this moment; what I do believe is that he was a sincere and gifted politician, the likes of which we may never see again.

and finally...Yes I KNOW this will be erased, but I will have at least 15 seconds of freedom of speech here and say: I really did wonder if there was something wrong with his brain when he endorsed Obama. Now we know.

The left parietal lobe of the brain contains the LaBrooa region which controls all speech in men.

(only woman have this structure in both hemispheres.)

ergo

If Ted had surgury, his speech could be lost.

Kennedy has had a lot of tragedy in his life, some brought about by his own misdeeds, but the man has put in a life of public service which has brought praise from just about every part of the political spectrum.

Does privilege and 'pampering' make up for the loss of two brothers in such a brutal fashion or the loss of his nephew at such a young age? Since we have not experienced either the positive or the negative sides of that particular coin are any of us in a position to make a judgment?

I'm sure that all possible effort will be made to extend Mr Kennedy's life for as long as he wants to fight and I hope that, at the end, he is able to die with as much dignity and as little pain as is possible.

I suspect that if I'd had two 'sibs' murdered I'd have a hard time saying that "It's been a good run all in all."

One assimilates and copes; one never says something to the effect of "It worked out pretty good."

Well, now I know he has seen hard times. Two sibs murdered, a plane crash that disabled him, driving drunk into the drink with a young girl, and all that.

But he has also lived a long, privleged, very pampered life.

So let's no go all maudlin here. He had a pretty good run, far better than most.

It's funny you mention the test candidate thing. When I worked with neurosurgeon, one of his partners did only experimental surgeries on brain cancer patients, for research purposes.

All of his patients died. All of them. He was a very odd fellow.

But that is how they figure out cures and treatments.

The chemo/rad is standard treatment but one article had a prominent oncologist saying he and others suggest applying to cancer centers as a test candidate. There are currently a lot of various treatments being tried and they say to find out if you might be a candidate for the testing. \\

As I said before, prognosis on the grade 4 type is generally less than a year even with treatment.

From the NYT article:

"The prognosis of a cancerous brain tumor depends on several factors. One is its location within the brain tissue. Another is how easily a neurosurgeon can remove the tumor. In general, prognosis is better for patients under age 45."

Since they didn't mention the surgical option, it must be inoperable.

The chemo & radiation won't do much good, if any, in all likelihood. However, they'll give it to him if he wants it.

It is really hard to say at this point how bad it is. Mind, his age alone is the biggest factor he has working against him. But we don't know anything specific about the tumor itself.

I also hope we aren't made privvy to that info. It isn't any of our fucking business.

I will say this: he has more going for him than most people simply because of his wealth and access to the best specialists in the world. They could keeping him going for awhile.

But at his age, nothing will work for long. And the emotional hit you take when you learn about the tumors is pretty substantial, so for someone like him who has been healthy enough to stay in the political arena for as long as he has, he may just want to not return after the summer recess, and fade away gracefully. Because of the problems he could have, I just don't see a return to the public arena for him.

But what the hell do I know besides nil about how Teddy boy feels?

Years ago, my doctor at the time was diagnosed with a glioma. He opted not to have surgery; he said that he saw no reason to make his remaining time more miserable.

Instead he and his wife took their young family on vacation to Tahiti where they had a wonderful time.

He was 43 when he died, three months after diagnosis.

FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE:

Malignant gliomas are a type of brain cancer diagnosed in about 9,000 Americans a year and are the most common type among adults. It's a starting diagnosis: How well patients fare depends on what specific tumor type is discovered.

Average survival can range from less than a year for very advanced and aggressive types -- such as glioblastomas -- to about five years for different types that are slower-growing.

One expert, Dr. Joseph Madsen, a neurosurgeon at Children's Hospital Boston, said the diagnosis was "very sad news."

"High-grade glio-malignancies" such as Senator Kennedy has "are unfortunately the most common kind of brain tumor in this age group, and they have a poor prognosis for long-term survival," he said.

They can also be very debilitating during treatment, Madsen said, and Kennedy's tumor is in an area where it may well eventually affect his speech.

Karen (a Senior Lead Lab Tech) says the Grade 4 types are common in older people and survivals are in the one year range. Most are well along before they are found.

Very tough news indeed.

My friend had a friend who had a similar tumour. She had the surgery and, I think, chemo and radiation. She lived another three years.

I hope he can rest on his laurels, so to speak, and allow himself to be with family and give up the demands of his public life. The stress of political life comes at a terrible cost for so many.

May health prevail for him despite what seems to be.

I worked briefly for a neurosurgeon a few years back, so I knew he had likely either had a stroke, a tumor, or an aneurysm.

Actually, for my sister-in-law didn't turn out to be the tumor (as was first suspected), but an aneurysm.

Her symptoms were headaches & nausea, then loss of consciousness. However, she had just completed (a few months prior) a heart valve replacement, and it isn't uncommon, after that sort of surgery, to have either a stroke or aneurysm.

I'm not sure how common aneurysms and stroke are in patients who had the surgery he did last fall to clear his artery.

When I read last Saturday that Kennedy had a stent put in last fall though, my first guess was he had either the stroke or aneurysm.

Once they came out and said it wasn't a stroke, I figured it was probably the tumor.

Prognosis is pretty bad for someone his age & medical conditions, but you never know who will sail through it.

My first wife's brain tumor initially presented with seizures. It was diagnosed as an astrocytoma, which progressed over the years to a glioblastoma. She lived 7 years after an initial prognosis of 1 1/2-2 years. It was in the right temporal lobe. Kennedy's is apparently in the left parietal lobe. It does not bode well. I am very sorry to hear this news.

Over the years, Kennedy has become a powerful voice in the Senate. In my opinion in the process he has given a voice to the voiceless. Long may he live and thrive.

It has nothing whatever to do with Kennedy or Celebrity worship. One can respect someone despite any flaws. I recognize a good many of my flaws but I would resist any attempt to write me off because of them.

van lingle, apparently you and katlaughing are Kennedy worshippers. My purpose for starting the thread wasn't intended to be about Kennedy worship. Now, I don't consider the Kennedy political legacy to be evil on the level of J Edgar Hoover or Richard Nixon, whose graves I would be delighted to dance upon. Indeed, Ted Kennedy has been a part of some important legislation in his decades in the Senate.

Of course Teddy was innocent of ANY wrongdoing--he was passed out dead drunk at the time of the "alleged incident". Oh, except for when he showed up in the living room without his trousers on.

It does pay to remember he is the grandson of a well to do Boston saloonkeeper, and the son of a Wall Street con artist, who came out of the Prohibition era with lots of nice mob boss friends and great liquor importing deals, making him millions after repeal. Daddy JP was also a movie mogul for a time, with a penchant for buxom movie stars (an apparently inherited Kennedy male trait). And because JP was a master at insider trading and stock manipulation, the ole boy actually made money in the immediate wake of the 1929 stock market crash.

But all that was chump change compared to what JP made in real estate during WWII, including the purchase of the crown jewel of his real estate holdings, the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, for a song.

So, the Kennedy family business--booze, Wall Street cons, real estate speculating, and of course, politics.

And being Harvard alum, too--how could I forget? That keeps him busy in Boston.
