Hi, dear,

I am not on Mudcat much, these days, but I stopped by to see what was going on. I was so sorry to read your news! You know I lost my dad, a year ago in April, & there are still moments that are hard to get through. The blessing is that there are many happy memories & I know that he is no longer imprisoned in a body that wasn't working. I'll be praying for you & your family. Hope to see you in June.

My Fathers' death was sudden back in 1984 - be glad you've had so many years and hold on to good memories.

My thoughts are with you. Many of us here know the mixture of emotions, which comes at a time like this. As you said, there is relief that the suffering is over and the natural sadness at the final departure. May the good things that came to you from your father stay with you forever.

Allison, his last days were in a beautiful part of the country, if he was able to get out to see it. Let the mountains and trees and water sooth your battered spirit. A few years ago some of my Dad's friends, several of them Mudcatters, and I got together on the Edmonds-Kingston ferry and scattered his ashes and sang some songs.

Thank you all, my dears. Yes, a funeral so soon seems hasty, and not everyone can be there, but in September we'll all be together (my side of the family) for my wedding and we've already pledged to remember him then in a joyful way.

I'm leaving for Seattle today- it's a long stretch, via Detroit. SRS, we'll be in Gig Harbor, where my stepmother brought my dad a few years ago in order to be closer to her family.

My wish for myself is to be calm and serene, acting thoughtfully and lovingly and not reacting to the inevitable family dynamics. Having my dear one with me is going to be a big help!

I'll be back in touch when I can. Meanwhile, once again I feel surrounded and held in loving Mudcat arms.

Oh Allie, I am so sorry, I send my best thoughts and Friendship energy to you and to your man (whom I am glad is there to support you in this difficult time) My mother too had Alzheimers (or something very similar) I will be with you "in spirit" and look forward to hearing more about him when you feel able to tell us.
For me, being your father (and Maggies G/f)sets him in a special and unique place already .

So sorry to hear your news, I lost my dad last September and still find myself with tears rolling down my cheeks at the silliest things that remind me of him. We lived 300 miles apart for many years and maybe saw each other once or twice a year, we spoke on the phone often, but now I KNOW I can't see him I miss him so much. Allow yourself to grieve, be happy that he has been spared more suffering and be proud that he was YOUR father. I send you my hand to hold, and a piece of my heart to patch the hole thats been left. Karen's mom died from a fall quite unexpectedly a few years ago so I know that regardless of any other circumstance, there is a certain shock to such an event. You know you are dearly loved and respected in this village......Wrap yourself in the thoughts and prayers from your friends here and take good care as you go through the next days.

I look forward to some of those additional thoughts and memories about him.

I hope you have time to sort all this out by yourself, and with your family. It's not a process that should be hurried.

I really hate the tradition of "instant" funerals. It took my family 6 months to plan a memorial service for Father, and the result was well worth the time.

My father, Frank Aldrich, died yesterday as the result of a fall. He had been suffering from Alzheimer's for several years, so it's a blessing, although a shock to us. I've spent the day on the phone and internet, trying (finally with success) to reach my sister in South Africa and my brother in Hawaii. My sister and I will attend the funeral this Saturday across the country in a town near Seattle, Washington USA. Tomorrow my dear man and I will fly from Boston to give ourselves time to help out, to look around, and be present for my dad's wife and the community there.

I value the love and support the Mudcat has offered so often before. I would appreciate your loving thoughts.

When I can I will write more about this complicated, brilliant man.
