If like me you drive to music events / festivals, you will be lamenting the current cost of petrol. I don't know if this is appropriate for mudcat but fuel prices probably affects us all. So please read and follow the link and then sign the petition if you feel it's appropriate.

Below is a link to the official government petition aiming to lower fuel tax. The petition runs out today, so if you want to sign, do it now.

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Lowerduty30/

Sign it, you all complain about high fuel prices, so do something about it, you need an email address and a home address, THAT'S IT !!!!!

At 50.35p a litre, the duty paid on diesel in the UK is the highest rate in Europe , where the average level is 22.7p a litre. Did you know that around two-thirds of the price of petrol is tax? For every ?50 you spend at the pumps, you only get ?17 of petrol. And don't forget that VAT is charged fuel tax too - a tax on a tax. Why should an essential like fuel be taxed at several hundred %, when heating fuel is only taxed at 5%?

Pleaase pass this on to EVERYONE you know.

No, we don't ALL complain about the price of fuel. If fuel wasn't taxed, something else would be. I prefer to pay the fuel tax and keep good schools, health service etc.

So thanks, but no thanks.

As we are currently paying one of the highest rates of fuel tax in the world - VAT on top of the Tax on Fuel , I am only too pleased to sign !

The roads are still full of cars and the same drivers probably want lower income tax too, i.e. summat for now't. So no, duty on fuel is a progressive tax on use which is fair. And before anyone accuses me of tree-hugging, I filled my car up this morning.

It's a good thing that road fuel is taxed; even with tax at its present rate, the real cost of road transport has fallen rapidly over the last 40 years. The result is that numbers and weight of vehicles has rocketed, with disastrous consequences for town and country alike. We actually need a lot more restrictions on the use of motor vehicles.

The recent rise has been almost entirely due to rises in the prices charged by the fuel suppliers; the fuel tax has remained unchanged, and the VAT 17.5% of the lot, so even removing it entirely would not get us back to where we were a few weeks ago.

Taxes have to be raised from somewhere; what cuts in services or increases in other taxes are you poroposing to compensate? Would you accept per-mile road charging, with all the surveillance that would entail?

I'm not proposing anything, I'm just passing on the information so people can sign or not according to their own views. I just wrote the first part of the post, the rest is the email I was sent about the petition. I'm not sure where I stand on the issue as I can see both viewpoints, but increases in fuel costs will have a knock on effect on the cost of many many other things and presumably contribute to a rise in inflation.

As a disabled driver relying on my car totally for getting about, and having no local bus service which I could use, I feel that the tax on fuel is discriminatory. When I buy products to help with disability and mobility problems, I can normally get VAT relief so why not the same for my essential fuel?

Me too, dammit.

I live in a village, and the nearest bank, dentist, doctor etc is 4 miles away. Also the nearest petrol station!
