The tradition is under threat - not true, the tradition almost died and is in rather good health.
Englishness is under threat - does anyone have the faintest idea what this means?
'This one's not worth it' - my greeting on the board.
1954 - the Rosetta Stone of the tradition. Just saying it puts you to the top table.
Unfolk - Unthank, country, blues, folk-rock, Mike Harding, the young, almost anything.

All things I've learnt in the last two months here. Anyone want to play shibboleth bingo?

Just a theory Gene, that almost anything upsets someone. Folk is the Princess and the Pea of musical genres.

Theres this hippy comes to see me play sometimes. he always says, 'wow!.... like man you were on fire tonight....'

Bob Stokes the Dublin Busker was gigging The Poets Corner (a rough Irish pub in the Meadows area of Nottingham, despite its genteel name) when someone set fire to the pub during his act. The next time he did it, there was a murder outside in the car park.

I remember Mick Peat organised a Pie and Peas Night, with Derek Brimstone doing the cabaret, when suddenly pie kitchen was ablaze. We had to evacuate the building.

I hope this is seen as a valid contribution to this cryptic thread.

Haven't drunk in the Poet's for many a year, though old Arkwright St. used to have some good boozers. The inflammability of Mudcat is due in no small to the fact that somewhere along the way Folk stopped being a musical style you either liked or didn't, and became a moral crusade. Since then every subject is dry tinder, each instrument a box of matches and every singer a potential log on the wickerman.

"every singer (is)a potential log on the wickerman."
Nobody warned me of this when I started off singing so many years ago ... I'm off for a singing weekend in Dorset tomorrow. It never occurred to me that putting fire and spirit into a song might be a hazardous thing. Should I be taking an asbestos safety blanket and an extinguisher with me ? Back to "Doctors" then......

We do still burn witches in our village from time to time, but it's not a religious thing now - just a bit of fun. We've stopped ducking them first, though, because it makes them so hard to light and with the price of petrol what it is....

It's ok to be a log for the Wickerman: however big the fire, there's always someone round the corner happy to piss on it.
Meanwhile...

Is there a single musician, vocalist or instrument that everyone can agree on?

Now then, don't be silly.

And it depends if you mean we all agree they're blooming marvellous or all agree they're shite.

What we're looking for is someone who's a traditional singer and a singersongwriter (or neither); as old as the hills and the new kid on the block (or neither); is part of the folk establishment and is a shunned, reviled rebel (or neither); is an inspector in the folk police and and a hunted fugitive from justice (or neither); has paid their dues round every godforsaken folk club in the land and wouldn't piss on the last folk club standing if it was on fire (or neither); is playing the latest cutting edge ambient folktronica and has taylored their entirely career to getting onto 'wonderful' radio two (or neither); is a proudly amateur folk singer who thinks turning professional is a betrayal of the entire movement and is a pro with major label backing and a brilliant PR machine (or neither); thinks 1954 is the holy word of god and a random year halfway through the last century (or neither) or is anywhere (or nowhere) on the continuum (or not) between the two (or more). (Or less).

And their name is....

WEhat's all this about 1954? What happens at 6 minutes to 8? Is that when the residue impinges on the ventilator?

Of course there are singers and instrumentalists that everyone agrees on. But I won't say who because it would start a row.

You got it ESAM. If I were to think of someone who represented the folkish virtues, was generous to a fault, held the tradition in high esteem and pursued unswerving devotion to their craft, I could guarantee within ten minutes someone would claim they were an unskilled arriviste, a monsterous libertine, and couldn't pluck fluff off a jumper or wipe the shin(t)e of xxxxxx's shoes.

Or look at it another way, we are all frogmen in this great ocean of.....ethnicity!

or we are all potatoes, singing our potato songs in the subterranean dark and hoping to be dug up and end up on the right table.

or we are all little songbirds gracing an uncaring firmament with the spiriual magic of melody and the passion of our words.

Earth, Water, Fire and Air

As far as I'm concerned, anyway.

Earth, Wind and Fire. Did Maurice White not sing of those grand times when the crops were in, the last fender was attached on the line and a young man's fancy turned to a little step dancing in Boogie Wonderland? T'was joy that eve to be alive under the harvest moon, and swap it for a glitterball in the inn at Studio 54.
