Subject: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Acorn4 Date: 20 Jun 08 - 08:38 AM Last week there was a thread entitled "more session rudeness" which I contributed to a couple of times. It seemed to contain the implication that there was a "generation gap" in the folk world judging by some of the posts. I don't think there is:- I've met loads of young talented performers who, it would seem, have every right to feel arrogant but aren't. To start the list:- Gareth Pearson Ruth Notman Gren Bartley and Tom Kitching Andy Whittle Any more for any more, amd let's keep it positive! |

Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Marilyn Date: 20 Jun 08 - 09:15 AM Well, I can't accept that anyone has a right to be arrogant since I think it's a very unpleasant attitude that any decent person will try to stamp out in themselves if they realise they have a tendency to it but ... some very, very talented young people that I enjoy listening to are: Joe O'Connor, Matthew Jones, David Jones, Kevin Lees and Maz O'Connor The CD 'Last Orders', featuring these young geniuses is one of my favourites at the moment (what on earth is the plural of genius anyway?) |

Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Acorn4 Date: 20 Jun 08 - 09:26 AM Marilyn, That's what I was saying - that there isn't, but the implication of last week's thread was that there might be! So I agree. |

Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Big Mick Date: 20 Jun 08 - 10:30 AM I shared a stage with a group called Steppin' In It. This is an amazing collection of talented twenty somethings, who have a joy for the music, and whose performance talents are something to behold. The only thing that gave me more joy that night than performing with them was the enjoyment of their company in the green room. On the bill that night was a couple by the name of Seth Bernard and Daisy May Erlewine. Voices to die for, masters of the instruments they carried, well versed in the songs they sang, and a delight to be around. These are just the young ones, and I had a wonderful time with all the performers, but these young ones left me feeling as though our craft is in very good hands. I could not have enjoyed being with performers more. And not an ego in the place, despite the bill being one of the most talented you could imagine. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Dave Sutherland Date: 20 Jun 08 - 10:56 AM Add Kerfuffle to your list Acorn - very talented musicians with a nice line in songs too. Certainly they, along with Tom , Gren and Andy have been very polite while an old fart like me has been pontificating on folk music to them over the last few months! |

Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Def Shepard Date: 20 Jun 08 - 11:09 AM Not so 'young' anymore, but Seth Lakeman is one of the least arrogant human beings I've met of late, many here at Mudcat could learn by his example |

Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Jun 08 - 07:12 PM oh! so that's what session rudenes was about......in that case, my comments were irrelevant. I'm not sure i like the idea of well adjusted, well behaved, nice, folk musicians of any age. Its like pop groups - we all like the dope fiend, sex and beer monsters more than bloody cliff richard. Try to encourage all these nice young people to kick over the traces a little....after all its a folk revival, not a remake of The Young Ones. |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: stallion Date: 20 Jun 08 - 08:09 PM well, I have only met two arrogant little sh**s and hundreds of well balanced, good humoured, and excellent teens and twenty somethings. "The Young'Uns" probably stand out as performers and as people but by and large the vast majority, the overwhelming majority, are personable and a joy to be around, if there is anything it aint a generational thing. Sadly the arrogant ***** I was refering to, one is a graduate of the Newcastle course and one is currently on the said course. When I went to university, in the inaugral lecture we were told we were the cream of what was left after oxbridge had taken their quota " Welcome to York, commiserations for not getting into oxbridge" was the exact quote. I didn't believe that for a moment. Anyway the law of averages would say that the newcastle course would reflect the population as a whole and maybe it isn't the course that encourages the behavior. |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: GUEST,Jim Date: 21 Jun 08 - 09:25 AM As long as young performers uphold the tradition and play the tunes exactly as written, I don't care if they have an ego or not. There is no place for self indulgent music... we must conserve this sacred music. Jimmy |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Big Al Whittle Date: 21 Jun 08 - 09:41 AM conserve......? like jam in pots perhaps. You make it sound like an unpleasant duty If you don't feel you're indulging yourself in your music, I'd knock it on the head mate. that's the whole point - you should feel like you're indulging yourself. Aim for mild enjoyment initially - perhps you'll get the hang of it after a bit. |

Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Spleen Cringe Date: 22 Jun 08 - 03:46 AM I'm not sure i like the idea of well adjusted, well behaved, nice, folk musicians of any age And if they are well adjusted, well behaved and nice, at least they ought to have the good sense to hide it... I was reading a highly entertaining interview with the (old enough to know better) John Lydon in Mojo recently (the one where he 'admitted' to liking Steeleye Span!) and it did occur to me that folk is sorely lacking in pantomime villains. Any contenders? |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Jun 08 - 03:55 AM 'it did occur to me that folk is sorely lacking in pantomime villains. Any contenders?' The names have been changed to protect the very guilty, m'lud.......! |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Jun 08 - 04:00 AM Think ESAM...... Have you EVER been to a folk festival yet where the muso's don't stand around in groups muttering sotto voce, DO YOU KNOW WHAT BASTARD SAID/DID.......! |
Subject: RE: Young, gifted and feet on the ground. From: glueman Date: 22 Jun 08 - 04:04 AM If you can't be an arrogant shite when you're young, when can you be? You have the rest of your life to realise what you do is a mediocre reflection of other people's genius. The problem is when people old enough to know better still walk round like Moses and his tablets. |
