Ads for car dealers who yell, and they all yell. I will not abide being yelled at; 16 weeks in the Police Academy back in 1988 led me to that decision. The same goes for the Oxy-Clean guy, too.

I was in a doctor's waiting room recently. On the TV, a well-dressed black woman leapt out of a chair, spread her arms out confidently and declared, "I believe in demons!"

My thoughts:

Why am I forced to listen to this crap?
I don't believe her for a moment.
There are probably poor, ignorant people who believe this creep.
The cost of this TV is probably being added to my bill.
I'm so glad I don't have a TV at home.

Glen Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity and all the other pompous opinionated screamers.
I don't have the stations on my home TV with those people, but when I work out of town, the hotel tv has CNN, etc. I refuse to watch the FOX channel at all.
At home I watch the PBS station. Masterpiece Theater, Mystery, the real news, and no ads... lovely.

Yeah, some of these self-promoters make a lot of money. I once tried to persuade one of my kids to follow the footsteps of the Billy Grahams, but he said he wouldn't be able to keep a straight face.

I find a reasonable amount of good stuff on TV, especially now that cable provides so many channels. PBS, Discovery, BBC News and special reports, science, National Geographic, some of the old movies, NCAA Basketball tournament, Euro 2008, the aboriginal channel APTN here in Canada as well as the occasional show on the French-speaking and TeleLatino channels.
Moreover the music channels on the cable- everything from 'World' to chamber- are good listening for one whose cd collection is limited by finances.

'Not watching' is not an alternative for me.

All this wingeing about TV! Take control! Get one of those hard disk-equipped boxes that allows you to record a couple of channels at a time, plan out what you want to watch, record it and then watch it when you want to watch it, fast forwarding over the adverts. Then you won't have to turn off the TV when someone you don't like comes on. The box I use and recommend is made by Humax.

On the other hand, if you can't find something to watch on TV, you must have very limited interests, or live in a country with poor TV.

On this note, a friend of mine was stuck in the hospital waiting room while his mother had surgery. The TV in the waiting room was blaring, and it was the Montel Williams show. It was something really outrageous - like grandmothers sexually abusing their grandchildren or some such and very disagreeableand graphic . My friend wanted to change the channel but the other family was enjoying it and loudly protested. My point being, when a TV is in public places shouldn't they limit the shows that are broadcast i.e. something innofensive like a news channel, weather channel, History channel, etc. That's what they do in my gym and I think it's a good idea.

Good point, Don. Most of her list are folks I would leave on, but a few months ago I had the satellite discontinued, and I really don't miss it that much. I watch PBS, as always, and I've started watching a couple of network programs (I haven't watched network programming in years, and most of it still is junk).

There's a mystery they started playing a couple of months back on PBS (we see mysteries on Friday night, but not the "Mystery!" series) that I'm enjoying, called "New Tricks" (as in, you can teach an old dog--or retired detective--new tricks). It has a lot of sly and funny innuendo that gets through, being from BBC, that probably wouldn't make it here. Anyway, this is a program I'll turn the television on for.

On UK TV: Carol Thatcher, Gordon Ramsay, Ant & Dec (natch!), Anne Robinson, Paul O'Grady, Oz Clarke, Bill Oddie (who has put wildlife conservation, in this country, back decades) that stupid film critic with the DA haircut on the 'Culture Show', that monumentally annoying Scottish Sikh in the turban, anyone in a soap opera, anyone connected with sport (particularly football) and anything to do with Rock Music.

So you see I don't watch a lot of TV! Or perhaps I watch too much - that's quite a long list (note to self - stop watching TV!!).

The only TV presenter that I find amusing these days is 'Mr Obnoxious' himself, Jeremy Clarkson! There's something anarchic and iconoclastic about Jezza - a rather puerile "how much can I get away with", well ...naughtiness ... which is in some ways despicable but (and this must say a lot about me) hilarious! Err ... sorry ... !

And I'd like to know which pin head at the BBC thought that DW would be a worthy, or even adequate, successor to the Mighty Alan 'Fluff' Freeman on 'Pick Of The Pops'.

A equivalent decision would be to plan a concert starring Bob Dylan and replace him at the last moment with Father Abraham and The Smurfs.

I agree with Mrs Duck about reality shows. I long for the days when people had to have a talent of some kind to be on TV rather than a
overweening desire to be 'famous' just for being on TV.

And I wonder if the death sentence could be re-introduced for anyone who uses the word 'celeb' in public?

Difficult for me to understand why so many folks find it difficult to hear BOTH sides of a political subject. Fear that if they listen to other views they may discover that there is, indeed, two sides to any particular issue? Mebbe. I listen at one time or another to most of the TV heads Alice won't listen to, but I also listen (often gritting my teeth admittedly) to the left leaning channels such as CNN (Wolf Blitzer and company),MSNBC (Chris Matthews and friends) NBC, ABC, and CBS (any of the news heads).

Doug
I listen to both sides.
But I listen to people who are reporting the news, not the radical rants and raves that come from the likes of Bill O'Reilly. I search out sources that report the facts, not slanted opinions.
There is an ombudsman for both NPR and for PBS that monitor their objectivity reporting the news. The other networks do not have that at all.

I should have said, rather than "both sides", the many sides of issues. There are more than just two ways to look at the issues facing us in the world today. I look for as much factual information as I can find about issues. Opinion too often is broadcast as "news", when it is not news - it is opinion. I find that happens more on FOX channel than any other tv network I've watched.

I agree with Les from Hull about the recording boxes - also using iplayer and the channel 4 equivalent, I can set TV around my life. As a result we watch less TV overall but what we do watch is what we want to watch.

My girlfriend's colleagues couldnt believe that we dont have a TV in the bedroom, and therefore dont watch tv before bed, yet at the same time a lot of them complained about not being able to sleep - they all failed to recognise the link between the sleep problems and watching TV.

Alice: thanks for the reply to my post. In my view the ombudsman for both NPR and PBS are not particularly objective. Note: I said in my view.

I think FOX news does the absolute best job of presenting pro and con views. Any panel discussion I have heard of political issues include both left and right views. I don't see that on CNN or the other networks. That may be one reason that FOX swamps all other cable news networks in audience size and ratings. I'm not a big fan of O'Reilly but it's not because of his political view. He claims to be an Independent. It's his arrogance and rude treatment of many of the guests he has on his program.

Shall we agree to disagree? I still love you!

I think the worst of all is the guy who does the colon cleansing infomercials and looks like death warmed over himself...then there is a particularly scary looking preacher on my channel 78 out of Portland, OR. I hate screachy voices. Matthews? How can he be under consideration to replace Tim Russert, unless I am mixing him up with someone else which I don't think I am..screachy voice. I hope Ifful gets the job. I used to love Luis Rukheyers, and I love the repairmen..Andrew Dan Jumbo is my favorite but I love Norm Abrams and some of the people who whiz in and arrange your house beautifully with your stuff...I like Oprah and Tara and lots of the ladies..exception of Katy Couric. mg
