Here's another person interested in leading a song at a C. Fox Smith workshop, Jennifer Woods. She would like to lead "Home, Boys, Home," a World War 1 poem which Smith titled "Homeward" but since has passed into the folk song world by a different title.

There's a long Mudcat thread which discusses the origin of this song. It's a fine song to listen to and has probably been recorded more often than any other C. Fox Smith poem to date.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

And, Nancy, any chance you'll find time to attend theFREE Portland Maritime Festival next Saturday in South Portland at Spring Point while you are in Maine (10 am to 4 pm)?

Charley, it's probably way too early for anything to be decided about the shantey workshop(s).

In general the final decisions about workshops and leaders can't be made for weeks yet. At this point the committee don't know who is coming; there are Invited Guests who can't give a final answer; and we don't know which non-Mudcat "regulars" will be coming. All of those people need to be considered in setting up the program.

The Program Committee has a huge jigsaw puzzle to assemble. It takes a LOT of meetings, e-mails and phone calls. (Taking so many things into consideration has a lot to do with the outstanding quality of the program year after year.)

Plus, some of these inconsiderate, lazy Committee people are going to music weeks and taking other vacations right now ;-D so they don't have the "face time" needed to discuss and decide. (I'm just jealous because I'm not taking any vacation this year.)

Since we first invited Mudcatters to the Getaway we have finished the program much earlier than previously, and published it on line. [I say "we," but I am just a kibitzer this year.] But "much earlier" means, say, two weeks before the Getaway instead of the Wednesday before.

What most of us do in fact is take a look at what has been suggested, think of a few things we'd like to contribute, and just polish up some of our favorites in the expectation that during the weekend we'll get -- or make -- a chance to sing some of 'em.

That's especially true for potential workshop leaders. They are leaders because they have a lot of love and appreciation for their subject and have a large repertoire. Most have far too many songs they'd like to do and things they'd like to say. My best advice is, if you're hoping to lead something, think a bit about what you'd like to do or say but remember most of the time is spent letting the participants participate. The workshop is likely to take on a life of its own and go in its own direction once it takes off anyway.

So anyone bringing an electric guitar will be duly sentenced to The Acoustic Chair?

Wait!..... "Duly Sentenced" means "hangin' from a White Oak Tree"! How could I forget?

We DO seem to get more than our share of feedback here without amps, though....

Hey, here's a shocking (or if reiterated, revolting) suggestion. Are there enough songs this side of Jimmy Murphy, The Bonneville Dam and chants of "Ohmmmmmmmmmm......" to do an Electricity Workshop?

Or should we stick to "Blow The Candle Out", and the like, with Carlie Baum at announcement time giving unplugs from our sponsors?

There has been rather a lot of thread creep about particular styles of music - Better off discussing it here.

HEy, last time I heard a blues workshop at the Getaway, a stand-up bass was kncoking out the bottom line with gusto and no-one was missing the beat.

I'm up for anything, but we aren't coming to the Getaway to raise hackles. Last year, I apologized in advance for doing "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", thinking it might not be "folk" enough!! :D

The various bagpipes are well suited for other types of music, evidenced by some of the stuff that Davy Spillane does, but one still gets kendall's point. FSGW Getaway is primarily a folk getaway weekend. Sure we can play a bit, but we should not change it by small degrees every year until the original intent is lost. This event far predates the Mudcat. We have been, for the most part, a positive influence on it. But we must remember that we are guests of the FSGW, and many of those folks set the standard for years.

Having said that, a small bass amp surely would not hurt to give a bass line to the blues. But electic guitars should not be there, and anyone bringing a strat or Les Paul, and a large amp, would be stepping over the line, IMO. The Blues, played appropriately for a FSGW Getaway, should be country blues, or acoustic blues, not amplified stuff. There are venues for that, but this isn't one. And the FSGW is a gathering, a retreat, a series of workshops, not a concert venue, with the sole exception of the mini concerts. It is a sharing place, not a starring place.

I look forward to the blues WORKSHOP, and an acoustic blues mini concert. I have seen these guys and they are great. Let's just keep it to the spirit of a Getaway.

All the best,

Mick

Kendall,

There was a black fellow named Rufus Harley who used to do just that, kilt and all! Of course, he played sax as well. He recorded on his own (one was called "A Tribute To Courage") and appeared on recordings with the likes of Sonny Rollins. There were those in the jazz community who readily dismissed him, but he was out there on the circuit for quite a few years.

There was also a Canadian band back in the 1980s I heard on a live radio show (Mountain Stage, maybe?) called Rare Air consisting of a couple of bagpipes, a bombarde and percussion. They played a World Music stew that included the likes of Thelonious Monk among its ingrediants and I believe they recorded for Flying Fish Records.

So, yes, it's been not only tried, but documented on recordings and attempted to be sold.

There's also the fact that most of the areas at the Getaway just aren't big enough or seperated enough from the other venues to allow for amplification. They certainly don't *need* it.

Well Bill, I don't tend to hide much, except when I keep my mouth shut. There are fewer & fewer places to go to for traditionally unplugged music & additionally that goes for unplugged traditional singing too.
If I want plugged I'll pay the thirty or so dollars & go see The Band or Buddy Guy or Muddy Waters. Opps I don't have the $30 to spare. See how poverty is so good for me.

so, Grace...YOU are now the standard by which we judge 'old'? *grin*

I KNOW amplified music is both common & popular...and I KNOW some of our regular Getaway attendees are 'eclectic' as well as electric. I just keep plugging for un-plugging in a few venues where 'trad' is the major historical interest. There are lots & lots of places for amplified stuff, but SO few where we can be relatively free of it.

I am not sure why 'louder' 'faster' and 'heavier' seem to be required to avoid boredom for some...but I have heard 'intensity' produced just fine with acoustic blues.

It's hard walking the line between sounding like I'm trying to mess with folks innocent fun and just wanting to avoid heading down a path where we change too much.

I'll figger out how to hide if it gets overwhelming.....

Then they'd better make it an hour workshop or an EJ mini-concert, either one.

Over here in St. Mary's church cemetary in nearby Rockville Maryland, we have the drunken wreck of THE F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The whereabouts of the photographer F-Stop Fitzgerald are as yet unknown.

If the Gerald fits, wear it? If not beware it? And if it sinks......?

And I know Chance really wants the Ian & Sylvia sing , but he shouldn't chew the ladies' ears off too badly. Besides, that would be more like the MIKE Tyson Workshop.....

I'd love to have Amos lead "Port o' Dreams" but reviewing his post above raises some doubts in my mind about his ability to post a coherent sentence.

Just a brief update with regard to the C. Fox Smith workshop. I've received several PM's expressing interest, which I prefer receiving to posts in this thread which I'm apt to miss between the chatter.

So far those interested in leading a song based on her poems include:

Severn
ClairBear
Roger in Baltimore

At Rita's suggestion, I've also sent an e-mail to Jennifer Woods.

Anyone else interested in leading a song? One doesn't have to plan everything but it would be frustrating if someone prepared a song that someone else was focusing on as well. I've got two dozen or so songs based on CFS's poems which I can lead so I'm not personally worried.

Here's another link to CFS's page at the Oldpoetry website, if you'd like to review some of the 626 poems there: click here for website

Only 50 or so have been adapted for singing, so far!

Charley Noble

Apropos of nothing, I had a bet with my boss, the Marine LtCol, that Ontario was bigger than Alaska. More fool me. Wikipedia informed us that Alaska is quite a bit bigger than Ontario. So now I have to buy him a Blizzard the next time we can get to the Dairy Queen (yes, there is a Dairy Queen outlet at the PX at one of the camps in Kabul).

HOWEVER, Alaska is still smaller than Nunavut. So there.

Have fun at the Getaway.

Roger-

With regard to the CFS workshop, take your pick of Zentz's arrangements but do give me an idea of which ones you'd like to lead. There are more than enough poems to go around (well, we've collected 626 so far.). I don't think we have to worry about anyone hogging 'em all. But I would like to make sure that those who are preparing for this workshop are working up different songs. I've got a couple of dozen to choose from myself so I'm not worried if anyone wants to lead one that I've arranged.

And Sinsull, you're also welcome to attend this workshop although it may not be as exciting as Bobert's.
