We're just back from the vets, having had to say a last farewell to Cleo. The finest tortoiseshell, the loudest purrer, the most loving little cat in the universe. She and I shared a sunny afternoon in the garden, but she'd lost so much weight and was so frail it was obvious there was only going to be one outcome.

Steve and I are in bits right now, as you can all imagine.

Anne

Sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure you gave Cleo the best possible life while she was here. You'll see her again.

Awwww... kitty. Difficult, yes. But, better to have known her, and she to have known you, than not. Wail loudly and then remember. That's all you can do. In time, fond memories will be yours, as Wesley has said.

So sorry for your loss, Tabster. Had a pretty special calico myself once. Cherish the memories.

So sorry to see this Anne. Try to remember that you've been able to give Cleo a wonderful loving home and let all the good memories wipe away the sad times.
Love & Hugs,

Oh, sorry about your kitty! Our pets give us so much for the paltry reward they demand - a bit of food and shelter and a friendly voice and hand.

This is apparently my day to be reminded of our dog who died two years ago - it's the third time today one of my favourite websites has included a tribute to an animal friend's passing, including Orac's beautiful tribute to his dog Echo who died on the weekend (link follows, if anyone is interested). I was sobbing in sympathy two paragraphs in, and I've thought about our dog almost nonstop since.

Now I'm reminded again by Tabster's loss, and Tabster, you can be sure a few of my tears will be for your little calico.

It's always sad to say goodbye to our four-legged family members. Go well, Cleo.

Anne-

At least you had a chance to say good-bye. We owe our furry friends a lot for the memories they create, and because of that we'll remember them for years to come.

Anne, I'm so sorry. We lost Belle a few weeks ago and I haven't been able to write about if until now. We still have two kitties but I miss Belle - she was always the one who greeted us as we arrived home, and always the one who came for a chat when I was hanging out washing.

Sorry for your loss, and, honestly, relieved as well. I saw the thread title and thought for a second that something had happened to Micca.

LEJ! LOL...sorry, Anne, but LEJ deserved that one!

Yes, I still miss my Amos Moses cat, and the Corgis Gillie and Annie. We have others now, but never the same. DAMN those critters for leaving us too soon. We weren't DONE with them!

Love and hugs from Erica and Bryn.

Our old pussy cat, Shelley - a tortoiseshell, too, died a week before her 20th birthday. We cried our guts out. We lasted three weeks, cos for us, a house isn't a home without a cat, went to the Rescue, and a couple of weeks later came home with Maisie, who is white and tortie, and Smutts, who is tortie and white.

So sorry to hear this. I too have just had to have my little white persian, Jasmine, put to sleep. She was the perkiest little thing, but her body was not absorbing food and she dropped down to 1.85 kilos. My little Mum died a month ago, so Jasmine has gone to the best possible lap in the sky. My brother said when he lost his dog, that they (animals)race through this life faster than we do and I know we miss them as much as humans in many cases, but we would rather feel the thorn than never see the rose.
Love and hugs,
Anniecat x

Thank you all for the kind words and the sympathy. I had started to grieve a while back, when it was clear to me that something was badly wrong, and yet was hoping against all reason that the vet could work a miracle.
Today we have taken advantage of the fact that Steve wasn't working and gone to an animal rescue centre, where we have adopted another tortoiseshell. Currently hiding under a cupboard. Yet to be named for definite, although at the moment going by the name of Fairford. It was the best course of action for us to do this so swiftly - the hardest part was deciding which of the many beautiful cats at the rescue centre would be the one for us. But Fairford (the second cat we saw) was very clear that we were the ones for her, so that's the way it's turned out.

I'm sorry, Tabster, I just went through that too....just three weeks ago...and it was so hard to process in my mind that she was gone. It took a couple of days and a poem to begin to move on...and I go visit her every night...

I was gearing myself up for my baby's passing for months, but you never are truly prepared for when it finally happens.

My parents and my sister will be going through it again soon...when their cat goes to the great saucer of milk in the sky....

Just cherish the time you spent with your kitty, and share her stories with your new master.

Yes, I'm still going through it all, brought on by the silliest of things (the sight of "her" towel and the memories of the game when she'd come in wet and then go and "hide" under tables, purring all the while, until I found her to rub her dry, for example).

The new cat is a little star. Once we'd got her out from under the wardrobe she spent equal time with each of us, rubbing up against us, head-butting her way to cuddles and generally showing huge affection. She's now spent an accident-free night, used the litter tray correctly, polished off two bowls of food and is currently asleep under our bed, having dared to explore upstairs as well as downstairs. She seems particularly fond of my sandals, for some reason, and has demonstrated how near to kittenhood she is by playing some games with a ball and a catnip mouse. Seems to answer to the name of Persia (or Purrzha) although Steve is convinced she should be Squish because of her ability to squeeze under the wardrobe.

talking of furry creatures - its funny you don't see those furry caterpillars any more.

I wonder if they were pesticided out of existence.

So sorry to hear about your loss Anne. We had a wonderful tortoiseshell when I was a child. She lived to be 16 and so was there throughout my childhood. Her memory stayed with me over the years, to the extent that I wrote a poem about her when I started writing in the 1990s. Having wonderful memories is some compensation I hope.

So sorry.

But after a suitable period of mourning, straight down to the
(R)SPCA to pick out another creature which needs you and what
you need to rescue and take care of.

That's how our Boots came into our lives--- after 'Studly'
disappeared we went to the SPCA to adopt and there was a
couple just bringing him in and told the lady "we'll take
him!" Two days of tests and waiting later and he was ours.

A day later, it was clear he needed company, so we went back
and got him a kitten to raise.

Boots has prehensile thumbs. Together with the fact that he
came to us de-clawed on the front, and it's like having a human.

Well, if two's company--- two 'barn cats' ended up joining our
'colony' of clean, indoor, grateful, kitties.

Highly recommend IAMS multi-cat hairball, weight, etc. control.

Just as a postcript - this month is determined to throw everything it's got at us! To put this little extra tale in context, so far in the past two weeks we've had a leaky boiler which cost over £400 to sort out, I've had major earning work cancelled in July and August, had an unpleasant dispute to ensure that other major work hasn't been cancelled which has left a previously good working relationship in tatters, had to take my car down for a new cambelt (not cheap) and found it needed yet more (not cheap) work done ... and then we lost Cleo ... and found Persia (Mrs Fairford) who appears to be a most excellent mog. However, yesterday morning when I took my car down for its (not cheap) work I left husband and father-in-law admiring the cat. Father-in-law bent down to stroke the mog, toppled over and broke his hip. And husband, not thinking of calling the emergency services, hurt his back picking up his dad. Cat somewhat freaked out by this spent much of the day under our bed.
Father-in-law now awaiting operation (can't do anything quickly as he's on Warfarin for multiple health issues). Husband still wincing.

Cat, on the other hand, is very content with her new home.

I'm just hoping against hope that the run of bad luck is over now.

Anne

Anne, our heartfelt thoughts are with you. Perhaps you could make sure she lives on in one of your stories? Bathsheba and Isolde send purrs and snuggles and say when you are passing any spare snuggles you have they will gratefully accept.
